Ola Tropical Apothecary has added a new skin care collection to their offerings called: Ola Hawaiian Skin Care. Utilizing infusions of powerful tropical ingredients, Ola Hawaiian Skin Care offers a range of cleansers, toners, masks, serums and a moisturizer to the line. Each of these products provides effective skincare solutions to keep skin looking young, radiant and nourished.
I was very excited to have the opportunity to try a product from Ola Tropical Apothecary. Being a Hawaii Native, I enjoy trying products from companies that are locally based here in the islands. I was sent the Plumeria Sugar Polish. If you know anything about me, it’s that Plumeria is one of my favorite scents, so I was eager to give it a try and share my thoughts with all of you.
The Sugar Body Polish is gentle, even on my sensitive skin and offers natural exfoliating properties while combining pure Hawaiian Cane Sugar with Organic Hawaiian Honey to renew and condition the skin. To these awesome combination of ingredients, Ola also adds an infusion of healing Hawaiian plant extracts with natural cleansers and tropical oils and butters to help cleans, soften and moisturize the skin. If I had to describe this product in one word, it would be “Luxurious”.
If I had to describe this product in one word, it would be Luxurious!
Using the Ola Tropical Apothecary Plumeria Sugar Polish is simple. Simply apply and/or use the product in the shower or bath to cleanse and renew your skin. Apply to damp skin and massage well, exfoliating and moisturizing your skin. Rinse off with warm water. You can use this sugar polish several times a week to help make your skin radiant and hydrated. My favorite places to use the sugar polish is on my heels and feet as well as my hands, elbows, and knees. This is especially a treat for me when I’m about to change out my nail polish or do a self-mani/pedi. It’s the perfect way to leave my skin looking great.
The ingredients in this particular product happen to be some of my favorites for skincare: honey, aloe vera, noni fruit, taro root, coconut oil, cocoa seed butter and kukui nut oil – just to name a few.
Ola offers a variety of products (as mentioned above) for use in their Hawaiian Skin Care daily ritual. While I have only tried their sugar polish, I’m excited to try out other products from the line to include: cleanser, toner, serum, and moisturizer. Masks are also available to add to your collection. Collections include the following:
ʻĀina (land) – The ʻĀina group targets normal to dry skin conditions. Harnessing the natural anti-aging benefits of tropical fruit, medicinal plants, and elements, ʻĀina Hawaiian Skincare is revitalizing, nourishing, hydrating, moisturizing for the skin.
Kai (sea) – The Kai group targets acne-prone skin and blemishes. Focusing on powerful anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-fungal and repairing sea elements and seaside plants to exfoliate, remove impurities, heal and restore the skin.
Pua (flower) – The Pua group targets the complex issues of sensitive or irritated skin. Drawing on the soothing and repairing benefits of tropical flowers to rejuvenate, soothe and soften the skin.
Mana Moisturizer addresses the total health of your skin. By infusing new discoveries in natural anti-aging ingredients extracted from the land and the sea, with powerful essential oils, we have created a deeply hydrating and nourishing base to which you may add the Ola serum of your choice.
About Ola, Tropical Apothecary is a natural-based bath and body spa collection centered on the Hawaiian concept of beauty and wellness. Fat VS Skinny, is that even a thing? I’ll be honest with you, this is probably a topic that many people are thinking about, but don’t normally talk about. As most of you know, I have been on a “Getting Healthy Journey” as of September/October of 2017. It’s been almost a year since I started working on my overall health while losing my weight. And boy oh boy have I noticed how differently I’m treated now that I’m smaller than I was before. Let’s chit chat about this, shall we?
As much as we all love to share our accomplishments with others, I think talking about weight loss is like an unspoken language. You either have those that support you and encourage you no matter what and those that talk about or put you down. Then, you have those that just don’t talk about the subject at all. But, once you really start losing weight, do people treat you differently? Well, after 10 months of working on my weight loss journey, I’ve noticed that I am most definitely being treated nicer in comparison to my heavier self.
You can read more about my weight loss journey here, but I’ll tell you that in about 10 months, I’ve lost over 80 lbs. Having gained all of my weight after having children, I was about 125 lbs through my mid-twenties, I guess I never really remembered how differently I was treated as I started to gain my weight because I was so caught up in everyday life. Fast forward to 2018, having lost as much as I have, I notice that so many people are polite and sweet to me. Going as far as acknowledging me with a smile (instead of a nod or a smirk) and often times holding my door open for me when they wouldn’t have done so before.
How can you tell that you are being treated differently?
Now you may be saying… “How can you tell that you are being treated differently?” Well, Maui (my island home) is small and you basically shop and visit the same locations most of your life, while seeing the same people each day, time and time again. So it’s very easy to compare how they treated you at one time VS how they treat you now. I’ve definitely noticed.
I’m super proud of my accomplishments, having not only losing over 80 lbs but also going from a size 3x/4x shirt to now wearing an XL. When it comes to jeans, pants, and shorts – I was wearing a size 22/24 and can now comfortably fit into a size 14/16. It’s been a long and challenging road and making the changes has taken a lot of time and effort. I’m very happy with the new me, but I can’t help but notice that being smaller means people are much nicer than before.
If you’re smaller in size, you may not have experienced this before, but imagine being overweight (or fat to put it bluntly) and in a grocery store and purchasing food. It doesn’t have to be “bad for you” type of food, because we don’t eat badly in our household. Imagine you’re buying vegetables and have a person say under their breath “Yeah right like you actually eat vegetables. If you did, you wouldn’t look like you do.” Or imagine that when you’re shopping for clothes, you have someone tell you, “no ma’am, that will not fit you, it’s meant for a more petite frame.” How about someone not say anything to you at all, but just snicker when they look at you, snob you or ignore you when you ask for assistance. I grew up with my Dad holding open the door for any woman or girl as my husband and sons do for me now, but imagine being at a door and a man walks past you while letting the door slam in your face.
Now, those may seem like they are quite extreme scenarios, but I assure you that if I didn’t experience them myself, I would have never known that it happened. While I experienced these things during the time when I was much larger, I just assumed that people were having a bad day or just didn’t like me. It didn’t dawn on me that it had to do with my weight. Fast forward to the present and I’ve had many encounters in similar situations and in some cases with the same people only to find that I was treated respectfully and nicely. Many of these people smiled at me, took the time to greet me and even have conversations with me. Some of these people even continue to acknowledge me by name, which only instills in my mind that they just did not like the fact that I was overweight before. Whether it disgusted them or they just had a phobia of it, I don’t know. All I know is that I noticed a difference.
This is a long post, so if you want to hear the Podcast version, click here.
I guess the reason for this post is to remind people that it doesn’t matter if a person is skinny or fat, tall or short. It doesn’t matter if someone has a skin color that is different from yours or they have curly hair and you have straight hair. No one deserves to be treated like they are beneath you. There’s a stigma in the world that basically states that “overweight people are gross and disgusting and that they don’t deserve to be treated with respect because they don’t respect themselves enough to lose the weight,” but most of the time that could be furthest from the truth. I didn’t gain my weight overnight and much of it stemmed not because I overate, but because of underlying health issues. I didn’t like being overweight or unhealthy and it took me a long time to figure out the formula to change all of that for me. I do want to say, that I am in no way skinny, but I’ve noticed a huge difference in my body as others are noticing as well.
If there is a lesson to be learned from this post, it is that everyone, no matter their size should be treated with respect. Smile at more people, hold doors open and treat others as you would like to be treated. We shouldn’t have to deal with that on top of everything else that is happening in the World.
I hope you all enjoyed this post. It may have been a little bit of venting or a whole lot of nothing, but it came from my heart and I wanted to share it with all of you.

About a month ago I received products from Hersday. Since they are a new subscription box/service, I wanted to share my thoughts with all of you. I’ve been using the night time and daytime pads, as well as panty liners and I am definitely impressed so sharing with all of you is a must.
What is Hersday?
Hersday is a cool subscription box that offers you pads that feel exactly the way we hope any pad does… non-existent. Hersday Pads are specially designed, allowing you to customize them for your flow while being so comfortable, you’ll forget you are wearing them.
What makes Hersday worth a look-see and test-drive?
Hersday pads are super absorbent, which is definitely important to me. I don’t want to get into details, but I experience a heavy flow each month and have really enjoyed the protection and absorbency that you get with these pads. They are also comfortable against my skin (I have sensitive skin) and don’t bunch up or move around. They are also leak-free and they dry pretty much immediately, which is a huge plus.
Hersday pads are customizable where you can select one of the following: Light Flow, Medium Flow or Heavy Flow.
One of the most important things that I enjoy about Hersday is the fact that the box is completely discreet. I had no idea what was included inside and neither will anyone else. The packaging surrounding the pads is minimalistic and compact, so it’s great for travel or tossing into your bag without anyone noticing.
How much is the subscription and the details of your order?
Hersday subscription is available at a PRE-ORDER cost of $4.99 for the first month and just $12.99 subsequently. Your subscription ships worldwide from the United States. Subscriptions automatically renew each month, but you can cancel at any time.
Each month you receive the following products in your subscription depending on which selection you choose:
Light Flow: Liners (10 pieces), Day Pads (12 pieces) and Night Pads (3 pieces) – Girls/Ladies who usually change 4 times per day select this plan.
Medium Flow: Liners (8 pieces), Day Pads (12 pieces), Night Pads (5 Pieces) – Girls/Ladies who usually change 6 times per day select this plan.
Heavy Flow: Liners (5 pieces), Day Pads (10 pieces), Night Pads (10 Pieces) – Girls/Ladies who usually change 8 times per day select this plan.
Light Flow: Liners (10 pieces), Day Pads (12 pieces) and Night Pads (3 pieces) – Girls/Ladies who usually change 4 times per day select this plan.
Medium Flow: Liners (8 pieces), Day Pads (12 pieces), Night Pads (5 Pieces) – Girls/Ladies who usually change 6 times per day select this plan.
Heavy Flow: Liners (5 pieces), Day Pads (10 pieces), Night Pads (10 Pieces) – Girls/Ladies who usually change 8 times per day select this plan.
Why do I like the Hersday Subscription?
First, let’s talk about convenience. Heading to your local grocery market, big box store or pharmacy takes time and energy. Not to mention, sometimes, it’s an uncomfortable situation to shop in public for feminine products. I like that you can order from the comforts of your own home, and have your Hersday products delivered straight to your mailbox.
Second, Hersday products are made well. They are so comfortable to wear that I forget that I have it on most of the time. They don’t shift and stay still on my panty. They absorb extremely fast (literally instantly) and leave me feeling dry and fresh. I’m absolutely impressed with the absorbency and comfort of these pads. Most pads I use require me to change every hour due to my heavy flow. But, Hersday gives me peace of mind without worrying about overflow or leaking.
For every sale they make, $0.20 will be donated to the Breast Cancer Organization.
So, to sum it all up – I’d like to say that I’m very impressed overall with the Hersday subscription. I highly suggest checking it out because it’s well worth a try. You can cancel your subscription at any time and check it out for yourself.
Have you heard of Hersday before? Head on over to their website and get all the details and/or sign up for a monthly subscription.
If you’ve been a long time reader here, then you know that my family and I love experiencing new restaurants and eateries. Last week, we found ourselves craving sushi and after spending a few hours at the Batting Cages in Kihei, we decided we would dine in at Three’s Bar and Grill. Having not had the opportunity to eat here yet, we were quite excited to try out the establishment, especially since it was visited by Guy Fieri from Diners Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network. I’m not gonna lie though, just reading their menu online had us very ecstatic about the food we were going to be ordering.
Three friends who loved to cook and loved to surf dreamt up the idea of starting their own catering business. In 2009, Three’s Catering was launched using a rented warehouse and their old trucks. After a few short months, their unexpected success had them looking for a location for a restaurant and here we are today. Sadly in October 2016, Three’s Bar & Grill had a fire at the restaurant and it needed to be repaired before reopening after renovations the following month. Now, the business is booming and I’m excited to share our experience with all of you.
Three’s Bar and Grill includes three chefs’ three cuisines – Hawaiian, Southwestern and Pacific Rim, making it a great place to experience a variety of food with different flavors and ethnicities. I love the wide range available to select from and I definitely love the casual island lifestyle vibe you get when you dine in here. You can choose between indoor or outdoor dining areas which are great for the laid-back atmosphere of the Southside area of Maui.
So, let’s talk about food, shall we? Three’s is open for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner and also offers a great Happy Hour selection (2 times a day is available). I also love that they have a great wine list as well as a selection of signature and delectable cocktails to choose from. All of these things are great, but I think one of my favorite parts of their food menu is the fact that they also offer a Kid’s menu and being a mom, that’s definitely a plus. We selected Three’s Bar and Grill because we wanted to try out their sushi and I just had to have a taste of their Oyster Shooters – a special on the menu (which, if you’re an oyster lover, I highly suggest).
Let’s talk about the Oyster Shooters. Traditionally they come in a shot glass with saké (Japanese rice wine), but I didn’t want to have any alcohol, so I asked them to make up a special order for me. The Oyster Shooters are made with Uni (sea urchin), a fresh oyster and tobiko (fish roe). They are topped with just a little bit of scallion or green onion for a fresh and vibrant look but also to bring out some of the flavors. They are tiny but filled with a punch of umami that will definitely cater to all of your senses. If you like seafood or love oysters like I do, this is a must-try for sure.
Whenever it comes to sushi restaurants or bars, my husband and I always order the Rainbow Roll. It gives us an idea of how fresh the different types of seafood is and the presentation of the sushi. Most sushi bars create the same types, but they all have different flavors and flare. We enjoyed the Rainbow Roll for sure and loved that each of the ingredients was fresh and absolutely delicious. It was so fresh that we were able to eat the leftovers for lunch the next day and the sushi was as vibrant the next day as it was the night before. Delicious and fresh sushi, made-to-order, usually comes with a Rainbow Roll on their menu and you can tell it’s fresh by the texture of the fish. Traditionally a rainbow roll includes the following: Ahi tuna, salmon and hamachi (yellowtail) or shrimp. If you bite into the different fish in this roll and they are buttery in texture, that usually means they are very fresh.
We had several different types of sushi rolls to include: Shrimp Tempura Roll (pictured above is 2 orders), Lava Roll (pictured below), and of course, the Rainbow Roll. The specialty rolls range in price from $14.00 to $20.00 which is about average for sushi here on the island. It’s reasonable considering the market price of the fresh fish. Their fish is fresh and flown in daily and they offer a variety of specialty rolls, sushi and hand rolls and specialty items.
Pictured above (and below) is the Lava Roll which includes: Spicy Tuna Roll topped with ahi, sriracha finished with tempura crunch, Negi and chili oil.
If my family and I order sushi, we always order a sashimi platter or sampler to try as well. This sashimi sampler (pictured below) included a variety of delectable and fresh fish that we loved. It’s the Chef’s assortment, so we don’t get to choose, but each piece that we received was delicious.
Our Sashimi Sampler included Saba, Hamachi, Ahi, Shrimp, and Salmon. The platter itself was filled with beautiful colors making it a delight to eat. Yummy!
And, since we were there during their Happy Hour that evening (Happy Hour times are: 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm, Late Night Happy Hour is Only available in the Surf Lounge) I decided I would place an order for a few more oysters. Their fresh shucked Penncove oysters are just $2.00 each for their Happy Hour special.
I wasn’t able to catch photos of my husband and son’s Beer Battered Fish & Chips Entree which they each ordered and definitely enjoyed. The Fish & Chips were made with beer battered mahi mahi that was fried to perfection, homemade tartar sauce, crispy fries, and lemon. This entree was simple was so good that they ate it too quickly for me to grab a photo of their food. lol
Three’s offers a wide selection of menu items to choose from and a great selection for their Happy Hour. We enjoyed the fact that these three Chefs came together and created a menu like this. I can’t wait to bring my other family members here to try the menu, since I know that there will be something for everyone to choose from.
Service was quick and our server was very courteous. The one thing that took the longest to arrive was the seafood and sushi, but our reservation was for 9 pm and we understood that they were in the midst of a busy rush, so it was expected. Most places on the island close by 9 o’clock in the evening and this particular part of South Kihei was still booming, with Three’s Bar and Grill quite busy for the time of night that it was. It’s a rare thing to see restaurants open so late so that is definitely a plus.
Three’s Bar and Grill is located in a little marketplace area off of South Kihei Road across from Kalama Park. The menu prices are about average for Maui and the food definitely tasted and looked fresh. My entire family enjoyed what they ordered (the Twins had Chicken Strips with Fries off of the Keiki Menu) and we look forward to going back again soon.
Three’s Bar and Grill is the sister restaurant to Fork & Salad, one of my favorite places to get a fresh salad with local ingredients. Stay tuned in the coming week or so for a review of some of my favorite treats from Fork & Salad discussed here on the blog.
Three’s has their own food truck that rolls up to different events and parties. You can find it at the Kihei Town Party events alongside the Fork & Salad Beer Garden Set Up for the Kihei Town Parties for Kihei 4th Friday. But, you can also book the food truck for your private parties and events.
If you’re interested in checking out Three’s Bar & Grill, definitely call ahead to book reservations or use Open Table (which is what we love to use) to book for your party. If you’re going to be dining in late, I highly suggest sitting in the Surf Lounge to take advantage of the Late Night Happy Hour and don’t forget to try out some of their signature cocktails too.

Want to learn more about Three’s Bar & Grill? Head on over to their website and have a look at their menus, about the company and restaurant and so much more.
As I stated before, my family and I enjoyed Three’s Bar & Grill and we know it will be a restaurant we’ll return to again soon. We hope they expand and open a location in town (Central) like they did with Fork & Salad, I think it would be a hit.

Displaying your artwork and photographs have come a long way over the years, from the standard print and frame. I love that there are so many other options available to decorate or gift when it comes to imagery. One of my favorite places to order prints and canvas and other decorative ideas from is Canvas Champ. I’ve shared Canvas Champ here on the blog before (which you can read about here) and I’m excited to show you another fun idea for displaying your photos.
Canvas Champ offers a variety of different options for printing your images and artwork, all at reasonable and affordable price points. I love using this site when giving family members gifts because it allows me to showcase our gorgeous photos without sacrificing the quality that you would want from a canvas printer. But, as I mentioned before, Canvas Champ offers much more than just canvas prints. I recently personalized and order a pillow from Canvas Champ with a photo of my husband and I.
Photo pillows are just as affordable as their other prints and start at just $12.00 for a 12×12 size. You can easily customize the pillow by adding the image you desire, adjusting the image with different filters if you’d like and adding text. You can order the pillow in different sizes and different backgrounds. I love that you can wash them and that they are durable, and you can be rest assured that they are shipped promptly – usually shipped within 3-10 business days.
Canvas Champ’s custom throw pillows are not only fully customizable, but you can select to have them as a square or rectangle. They come in 80% polyester and 20% cotton blend. I love that you can easily add photos from your phone, computer, Facebook, Instagram or even Google Photos. All of the pillows are available to order and customize in 10 popular sizes.
Ordering your own custom pillow is simple. Canvas Champ has a website that will allow you to see your design live as you create it. Simply upload the photo(s) that you want to you and select the specifics for your project. Your checkout is secure and fast and in a couple of weeks, you’ll have a beautifully “designed by you” piece of art that you can either display or give as a gift.
“In a couple of weeks, you’ll have a beautifully “designed by you” piece of art that you can either display or give as a gift.”
As I mentioned before, Canvas Champ offers a variety of different options available to choose from. I love ordering canvas artwork from the site during the holidays because I know that it’s affordable so that each family member (trust when I say it’s a very large gift list), will have something I personalized for them. The products are made with quality materials and Canvas Champ offers a money back guarantee which is a great addition to their already awesome service.
Canvas Champ offers a variety of home products, photo products and more to include: Canvas Prints, metal prints, wall art, photo boards, engraved plaques, pop art, poster prints, panoramic prints or boards, photo calendars and books, mugs and so so much more. They guarantee the lowest pricing Canvas and while I’ve worked with Canvas Champ several times, I still absolutely love the company and the site and have ordered many many gifts from them. I definitely suggest checking them out and trying them for yourself.

As a local Maui native, born and raised on the island, I know all too well how expensive Maui life can be. Between the cost of living, delicious dining venues and the awesome attractions, $20 does not get you very far, especially when you’re here on vacation. That’s why I wanted to share with all of you my “top” budget-friendly activities that are perfect for your trip to the island while visiting or for the locals alike. Maui offers so many great attractions or things to do that are not only affordable, many are free. In this list, I will share with you some of my free favorites as well as a few that you will need to pay a little, but it’s worth it for sure. With a little patience and planning, you and your family can have a blast. Let’s chit chat about those options, shall we?
*Please note that this list is in no particular order. I think all of my selections are fun and exciting and while visiting or looking to take part in a little Maui stay-cay (if you live here), these are all great options to check out.
#1 – The Maui Swap Meet
The Maui Swap Meet is a local favorite and one of the best places to try out a variety of Maui food flare or to pick up souvenirs. Admission to the Swap Meet is just $0.50 a person (12 and older) and children 11 and under are free. With free re-entry and free parking, it’s the perfect way to spend a Saturday morning. There are usually over 200 vendors on any given day and you can find everything from fresh produce to local food, arts, and crafts, sweet treats like Hawaiian shaved ice and jewelry galore. I also love that you can get handmade soaps and candles or a great 10 minute (or more massage). If you want to try fresh fruit and vegetables, you’ll get every type there – including delicious Maui Gold Pineapples. My favorite to grab while at the swap meet is a fresh coconut with sweet coconut water and then coconut spoon meat after I’m done drinking. If you are here on vacation, this is a great place to stop and pick up souvenirs for your family and friends.
*What is spoon meat? It’s when the coconut meat is so soft and tender that you can scoop it out of the coconut shell with a spoon. It’s the best way to eat coconut in my opinion.
A few notes for your day at the Maui Swap Meet – Be prepared with your own bag (recycle tote, etc.) to easily carry your purchased goods. Since it’s often hot, make sure to have water or something to drink to keep hydrated while walking around. Be prepared with cash as most vendors (vegetables and food especially) do not accept cards. Many jewelry vendors do accept credit cards so it’s best to ask if they offer that option but be prepared with cash. Most of the vendors are definitely willing to bargain on the cost of products, but I suggest looking around before buying since some of the vendors further away tend to be cheaper.
#2 – Experience Maui Food Fare at Local Food Trucks
Food Trucks are becoming all the rave around the world but they have been a popular thing here on Maui since I was a little girl. I remember going to Makena Beach as a teen and eating from a few local food trucks back in the day. Nowadays, you can find food trucks selling every type of food pretty much everywhere on Maui, stationed all over the island.
Food trucks are a great way to experience a variety of different local eats for half the price of most sit-down restaurants. They are a great way to grab a quick bite to eat or stop and fuel up after a day playing in the ocean. Some of the food trucks on the island have specific lots where they are located (Kahului Food Truck Lot across from Costco Gas Station) or you can find them in places like the Maui Swap Meet, along Kahului Beach Road at Kahului Harbor or different shopping centers. You can easily spot a food truck everywhere on island, making it a go-to for locals and visitors alike. And, did I mention the type of food you can find at these trucks? Well, the options are endless but include Local Hawaii food and plate lunches, shrimp, Thai food, desserts and ice cream, hamburgers, tacos, Mediterranean food, poke or fish and so much more.
Some of our favorite food trucks are:
Thai Me Up – Kahului Food Truck Lot (across from Costco) and Up Country Kulamalu Shopping Center by Longs
Maui Freeze – Kahului Harbor
Geste Shrimp – Kahului Harbor
Mediterranean Grill – Haiku
Wraps To Go – Up Country Kulamalu Shopping Center by Longs
Dino’s Gourmet On-The-Go – Kahului Food Truck Lot (across from Costco)
#3 – First Fridays on Maui
A great way to experience Maui, in a nutshell, is to attend one of the First Fridays. There is a town party each and every week of the month that is hosted in each town throughout the island. Each town has their own type of celebration and you can expect to have a grand time no matter what First Friday you attend. It’s a fun way to experience Maui nightlife without breaking the bank.
Maui First Fridays are free to attend and most of the parties offer free parking. Bring your appetite and make sure you have cash on hand so you can experience local food and entertainment all in one place. This is a great place to check out awesome vendors that sell everything from food to local crafts and artwork. But, local stores and establishments also stay open and often times offer discounts for the festivities. I love the entertainment that you can experience while walking around (many local artists perform during First Friday parties). This is a great way to experience local artisans, live music and a ton of food vendors.
A few notes if you’re planning to attend: Like I said, it’s a great family event, but be prepared as it gets really busy. Be sure to have a stroller or keep your children nearby as it can get so packed that children get lost easily. I suggest to also have a bottle of water on you as there tends to be a lot of walking around and it’s a great way to stay hydrated.
A favorite thing for my family to do each year during our winter months is to watch the whales. Maui is the winter home to thousands of whales that make the journey from Alaska to the Au’au Channel located in West Maui. The humpback whales come to breed and nurse their young every year from December to May. These beautiful creatures can be found swimming around and playing in our warm waters and it’s a beautiful experience to watch them while they’re in play.
Whale watching tours are actually reasonably priced considering you get a ride on a boat and get to experience our world’s wonders. I would definitely search different companies to use and compare prices accordingly. But, my family and I love watching whales at no cost from our favorite shorelines or lookouts.
Honoapi’ilani Highway, at the Pali Lookout, has a great scenic lookout area that you can pull over and park at to watch these whales at play. My family and I also love to watch them from the shoreline at Maui’s famous Ka’anapali Beach fronting the Westin Maui resort. You can stand on the shoreline and watch the whales play for hours.
*A few tips – if you spot a whale at play while driving, please be sure to pull over off of the road safely. Many visitors spot the whales while traveling along the Pali road and it is dangerous to stop in the middle of the road due to blind turns. Pull off the road completely and do not block traffic.
#5 – Snorkeling on Maui
I grew up with having Maui’s surrounding ocean as my playground so I just had to suggest this awesome activity. Snorkeling in our pristine waters and viewing all of the beautiful sea life is definitely something I suggest while visiting or even if you live here. The waters are crystal clear most of the year so it makes for ideal viewing of turtles, eels, sea urchins and a ton of different species of fish.
You can easily rent snorkel gear from a local dive shop, but if you plan to spend more time in the water, I definitely suggest picking up your own snorkel set. There are a ton of different stores that sell them locally and many of them affordable in cost: ABC stores, Target and Walmart all have different styles. But, our favorite place to pick up snorkel gear is at our local Costco in Kahului (near the airport) because you’ll get a really good one for an affordable cost point. Make sure you grab a dry snorkel (that’s important) because it automatically closes when you go underwater so that you don’t have to worry about getting water down your snorkel.
There are so many locations to view underwater life so we have listed a few favorites for all of you to check out:
Black Rock – Kaanapali Beach (ocean side of Sheraton Maui resort)
Ho’ikipa Beach Park (check weather conditions are the waves can get really big here, especially during the winter months)
*A few tips: It is very important to remember that while you are snorkeling, do not step on the reef. These rocks are living creatures and you can injure and harm the home of many living organisms. Also, make sure that you are using an all natural sunscreen that is zinc-based to protect from sunburn but also to protect Maui’s very important ecosystem. Make sure that if you are going to hang out at the beach after your snorkel that you take with you an rubbish or items that you brought. This is the best way to keep our oceans and ocean friends safe and unharmed.
#6 – Experience Maui’s Beautiful Beaches
I guess you could say this goes along the line of snorkeling, but it’s definitely different. Maui has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world – if you don’t believe me, ask Conde Nast – lol. The beach is one of the best things to do on Maui because it’s free and all beaches are open year round (weather permitting, of course). Grab a beach mat or blanket and stop by a local store to grab some lunch and spend the day sunbathing or playing in the water. Most of the year the water conditions are absolutely ideal for swimming.
What’s great about our beaches is most of them are open to SUP or Stand Up Paddle Board, Kayak or body boarding. While those things all cost money (for rental or purchase), they are also other options for enjoying the beaches surrounding our beautiful island.
*A few tips for spending the day at the beach. Don’t forget about that all natural sunscreen I mentioned earlier, but make sure you have it because a sunburn can be brutal. Remember, anything you bring with you to the beach, take with you – like trash, etc. Leaving it at the beach can cause issues with the sea life, but we also want to make sure we are taking care of our beaches so others can enjoy them. Ask your concierge (if you’re a visitor) about beaches that they suggest for the type of activity you’d like to do. And, don’t forget to check the weather, tide and water conditions before getting into the ocean. A local saying here on island is – “When in doubt, don’t go out!”
#7 – Catch a Hula Show or Learn How to Dance Hula
Hula dancing is a huge part of the Hawaiian Culture and a beautiful art form of the Hawaiian people. There are several hula shows on the island that you can attend and for those of you looking to try it out for yourself? Well, you can also find free hula lessons as well. Check with your concierge to see what is available or check out my list below for options that you can take part in.
Keiki (children) Hula Show – Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00 pm at Lahaina Cannery Mall. (Free)
Free Hula Lessons – Thursdays at Lahaina Cannery Mall at 5 pm
Napili Kai Foundation’s Weekly Keiki Hula Show – Every Tuesday at 5:30 pm at Napili Kai Resort ($10 for adults, $5 for children 6-12, children 5 and under are free). Proceeds benefit the Napili Kai Foundation.
Polynesian Dance Show – Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 pm at The Shops at Wailea. Free one-hour performance of Polynesian Dances and Hula.
*Check with your resort’s concierge to also see if your hotel/resort has hula lessons on property. It may be complimentary or available for a small fee.
#8 – Tasting Maui Food Tours
When I travel, I love tasting foods that are locally grown or created in the place that I’m visiting. So, I thought the best way to really get to know Maui is by tasting the food that was created here. We have a list of some of our favorite places that are not only reasonably priced but definitely worth checking out.
Surfing Goat Dairy – Probably one of my favorite tours and most cost-efficient compared to the others.
Daily Casual Tour – $12/adults and $8/children. Tours are run every hour from 10:00am to 3:00pm and 10:00am to 1:00pm on Sundays. This casual 20-minute walking tour takes you through their working Dairy and Farm. You can meet the working dairy goats, dogs, cats and their pot belly pig named Charlie. You can view the modern milking machines and view the inside of the Dairy operations. Some goats are able to be pet and of course, it’s an opportunity to take lots of photos and have fun.
Surfing Goat Dairy also offers their Evening Chores & Milking Tour which is $17 for adults and $14 for kids.
Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm – You can book the following:
Guided Walking Tour $12/person – reservation recommended. Times are: 9:30am, 10:30am, 11:30am, 1:00, 2:30pm daily and last about 30-40 minutes.
Guided Cart Tour $25/person – reservations are required. Tour times are 10:30 am and 2:00 pm and last one hour.
Gourmet Picnic Lunch $26/person and includes a basket tailored to your liking with choice of chicken Ceasar wrap, ham & cheese wrap, Caprese sandwich, chicken bacon club, Italian sandwich or garden salad. Lunch includes gourmet chips, a decadent lavender-infused dessert and your choice of beverage. Reservations are required.
Maui Pineapple Tours – You can book the following:
Maui Gold Pineapple Fields & Facility Tour plus lunch at Hali’imaile General Store ($90 / person). This is probably one of my favorites out of all the tours offered as it provides lunch from one of my favorite restaurants – Hali’imaile General Store. It’s the best selection for the money and I highly suggest it. The tour includes a tour of the farm to experience a working pineapple field and operation. You’ll learn about the growing cycle and cultivation techniques, tasting states as you learn about each of them. You also get a Free Pineapple with every tour.
Pineapple Tour – $65/adult and $55/child.
Pineapple Tour & Distillery Tour – $75/adult
Pineapple Tour with Lunch + Distillery Tour – $100/adult
Maui Chocolate Tour & Workshop – $59/per adult and $25/per child 7-12. This is a working farm and is not able to accommodate people with physical disability due to elevation and mobility. Learn how the cacao grows and post-harvest practices to develop the flavor. Join in on hands-on processes and a unique guided tasting. *For more info: Maui Chocolate Tour
#9 – Tour a Brewery, Distillery or Winery
Many visitors don’t realize that we have several awesome distilleries, a few breweries and a winery on the island. If you are visiting local stores like Whaler’s General or ABC Store, even Walmart or Target and Costco offer local favorites when it comes to wines and other beverages. But, many of these options can be found where they are made and these places also offer tours.
Maui Brewing Co – 605 Lipoa Parkway, Kihei. Tours offered at: 11:30am, 12:15am, 1:00pm, 1:45pm, 2:30pm and 3:15pm. *Public Tours are $15 per person and a private tour is $300 (groups of 1-16 people) For more information: Maui Brewing Company
Kohola Brewery – 910 Honoapiilani Highway, Ste. 55, Lahaina. Tours are 30 minutes long. *Tours are $10 per person – ages 21 & older only. Tipping is recommended. For more information: Kohola Brewery
Hali’imaile Distilling Company – 883 Hali’imaile Road, Haili’imaile. Tours are $10 per person and children under 12 are free. Reservations are required and tastings of products are available to guests 21 and over. Each tour operates daily and lasts about 30-45 minutes. Maximum reservation is for 20 people so if you have a larger group, contact the distilling company for options. You can get more info or reserve your space online at: Hali’imaile Distilling Company
Ocean Organic Vodka – 4051 Omaopio Road, Kula. Tours operate 7 days a week 9:30am to 4:00pm. A gift shop is also open from 9:30am and closes at 5:00pm. The tour is approximately 500+ yards so you must be mobile to be able to do the tour. Sampling area is restricted for those age 21 and over. Tours take place every half hour. Cost is $12/person for those 21 years and older ($27 including a lunch meal – reservation required 24 hours in advance). Includes a sampling with take-home souvenir Ocean Vodka shot glass. Get all of the information for this tour: Ocean Vodka Tours
Maui Wine (formerly Tedeschi Vineyards) – 14815 Piilani Highway, Kula. Tours are offered at: 10:30am and 1:30pm and are 30 minutes long. No reservations are required for groups of less than 8. Tastings are $12 – $17 per person for a flight of 5 wines. Tours are complimentary. There are several other tastings available, including the “Old Jail Tasting” which is my favorite. It is a 40 minute experience and costs $35.00 per person. For more info: Maui Wine Tasting Tours
#10 – Take a Drive to…
Whether the road takes you on a journey to the west side of the island, the east side of the island or up a mountain, I definitely suggest spending a day exploring the island by car. Whether it be driving the winding road to Hana and experiencing the lush landscapes along the way or traveling up to the Haleakala crater to experience the views (sunrise or sunset – both are awesome), you can easily experience Maui in all of its beauty without paying a dime, well – with exception to gas and the cost of your rental, of course.
A few of our favorite places to drive to and through and experience the beauty of Maui include:
The infamous windy road drive to Hana – be sure to stop along the way and take lots of photos. Remember that the road is definitely narrow and winding, so be sure that if you stop, pull off the road and be cautious. The road is dangerous so be mindful of the surroundings and where you are.
The road to Haleakala Crater – while the crater is definitely a must-see, the road leading up to the crater is definitely just as breathtaking. A winding road the whole way up – there are definitely great places to stop along the way to experience the views from way up high. I would use this opportunity to capture photos of the entire island from the skies, dance in the clouds and feel the cool air on your face. Don’t forget to stop off at Kula Lodge or Ali’i Kula Lavender farm on your way down
Drive through Up Country Maui. Whether your drive takes you through Kula to visit the beautiful Jacaranda trees in the Spring or through Pukalani and Makawao to visit the old Paniolo (Cowboy) town, you’ll surely find something beautiful in the cool crisp upcountry air.
Take a drive to the west side. Watch the surfers hang ten or see the whales breach in the blue waters. A drive around the west side of the island will open your eyes to a variety of water sports available on Maui.
They say the best things in life are free. I believe that it’s not the “free” aspect that makes it the best part, I believe it’s the memories you make while doing these things that make it the best. I wanted to provide all of you a full list of things that you could do on Maui, most of these are free or definitely cheap, with a few options to upgrade your experience. As a local girl, born and raised on Maui, I still love taking part in the island experience that Maui offers and I wanted to share these with all of you.
Don’t worry – this is just a small handful of things we love and enjoy here. You can expect to see more posts like these that include favorites of a variety of Maui island things to do and experience. Just remember to enjoy your time with whatever it is that you decide to do and don’t forget to have lots and lots of fun.

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of FarmHouse Fresh and their awesome body and skin care products. I’ve featured the brand several times here on the site and boy oh boy am I loving these two particular products, especially for summer. Today I introduce you to the FarmHouse Fresh Vitamin Berry Facial Tonic and Three Milk Ageless Night Cream. If you are anything like me and have dry skin year round, I think you’ll definitely want to tune into this post and read all about these beauties.
The Vitamin Berry Facial Tonic is an Instant Pore-Refining Toner. Retailing for $36.00. The toner comes in a 3.5 oz glass bottle and it’s a product that I’ve been absolutely loving lately. 99% natural, vegan and gluten free, this product really leaves your skin feeling and looking flawless. I’ve been loving how my complexion is looking lately and love this product more because it is alcohol-free. This toner smooths the skin and helps to boost moisture. Let’s face it, with my sensitive and dry skin, I need all the moisture I can get.
This product provides vital nourishment from U.S. grown organic aronia berries which is said to be a miracle fruit with one of the highest antioxidant contents ever recorded. It has a natural filter effect to help make pores appear as if they were never there. It literally is a new favorite and I love how it makes my skin look and feel. Since I don’t use foundation, this product really has helped my skin blossom the last month.
This toner delivers pristine rose water and a touch of a polyhydroxy acid to provide a light and long-term exfoliation. The berry vitamins help to visibly reduce the look of fine lines and I love that it’s a product you can spritz for on-the-go hydration for instant refreshment whenever you need it.
I apply this product after my morning skin care routine. I apply a mist evenly to my face and neck and when I have a little extra time, I’ll apply to a cotton pad and smooth evenly over my skin. This product should not be rinsed. I apply it at night when I feel I need an extra boost of hydration or if my skin is looking dull. I also love using this to help refresh my skin and cool me down since summer has already begun here in Hawaii and it’s hot. I love the scent of this mist. It reminds me of a light berry scent, though my husband says that he doesn’t smell berry, he smells a light sweet fragrance. I think the smell is a great way to jump start your day.
Now let’s chat about the Three Milk Ageless Night Cream. Anything with the word “ageless” in its title has me absolutely amused and intrigued. This night cream comes in a 1.7 oz glass jar and in a decorative box. It retails for $45.00. It is known as FarmHouse Fresh’s #1 selling face cream and boy can I agree because I think it’s wonderful. This cream is said to literally transform your skin overnight and I’ve been loving it. This “wonder milk” is uniquely rich and definitely hydrating. It offers a time-release delivery system of pure form retinol. Because so many retinol products can cause redness, irritation and dryness (I know this first hand), this product is definitely in a whole different leaque. The slow-release system ensures it delivers softness, illumination and firmness as well as other awesome benefits, without the usual side effects that you would expect or may have experienced with pure form retinol.
I didn’t expect that this cream would not only be thick but definitely smooth. But, you’ll be amazed at how wonderfully it blends into the skin and how well it works overnight. In the mornings I find that my skin feels so smooth and looks bright. After spending some time in the sun, I found that it’s been so beneficial in healing my skin and helping with my sunburn as well. (Of course, I do not suggest putting it on any open wounds or sunburn)
This cream includes botanical milks and skin restoring peptides that is in FHF daily moisturizer plus the restorative retinol and proprietary blend of vitamin extracts, moisture boosting ingredients and a cool creamy texture. I definitely think after the first use you’ll notice a huge difference in your skin’s texture and brightness as well as how fresh your skin looks.
A thin layer at night is all that is needed when using this product. I apply it to my face, neck and near my crows feet (just a little) as my final step in my night-time skin care routine. I have found over the last few weeks that it definitely has helped to hydrate my dry skin and revive my dull skin tone. You may also notice a decrease in fine lines, wrinkles and a firmer complexion. This product does have a fragrance, but it is light and quite nice. I didn’t have any scent sensitivities while using this product.
If you’re interested in learning more about these products including their full list of ingredients, definitely head on over to FarmHouse Fresh’s Website. Also, don’t forget to take a look at some of their other awesome products. I have a bunch of my favorites listed here on my blog, so definitely do a search for FARMHOUSE FRESH and read my thoughts on some of these awesome fresh-baked goods.
Thank you FarmHouse Fresh for sharing these delights with me. I am absolutely loving them and I know my readers will enjoy them too.

My family and I found yourself dining in at Poi By The Pound restaurant the other day. It had been almost a year since we last ate there, having eaten at this restaurant for the first time the night of my father’s funeral services. It turns out we were back there again because we had scattered my dad’s ashes a day before and my cousin who was visiting for that event was craving some ‘ono (means delicious in Hawaiian) grinds. I’ve eaten a few select things from Poi By The Pound before, but there was little on the menu I have tried, so I was eager to taste some of their popular menu items. Most of the reviews on Yelp and Google were very positive so I decided I would order a few things I saw mentioned in those reviews and test them out for myself.
Poi By The Pound is just 5 short minutes away from the Kahului Airport so it’s perfect for stopping off when you land on Maui or on while on your way to your next destination. They are open 7 days a week and they take walk-ins which is great. If you have a party of 6 or more, I definitely suggest calling ahead to make a reservation. Whether it is dine-in, take-out or catering, they have a variety of selections for you to choose from so that’s a great option for that party you’re planning or to grab a speedy bite to eat.
Poi By The Pound started as a small little restaurant in the industrial area of Kahului and now reside in the old Denny’s Restaurant location. I haven’t eaten or dined in at their Kahului Industrial location, but I think the old Denny’s location is perfect for them. During our two visits (last year and the other day), the restaurant was packed, so you know it’s a local favorite here on Maui. Through their love of Hawaiian food, Poi By The Pound is now a popular eatery here on the island.
So, I know you’re waiting to find out about the dishes we tried out, right? Let’s dive into those, shall we?
I wanted to start off with the Deep Fried Lau Lau. Yes, I said deep fried. I didn’t see this on the menu, but since reading the reviews on Yelp, I knew about it. I was so interested in trying it out so I had to order it (even if I didn’t eat it all).
The deep friend lau lau is basically a lau lau (pork wrapped in taro leaves and lightly flavored with Hawaiian salt. It is slowly steamed to absolute perfection) that is breaded/battered with panko breadcrumbs and deep fried. Considering it was deep fried, it was not as heavy as you would have thought it would be. Honestly, lau lau is really heavy on its own and I felt that the breading didn’t make it too overwhelming. If you like lau lau, you definitely have to check it out and see for yourself.
A definite favorite for any local here is a Hawaii staple known as the Loco Moco. Poi By The Pound’s Loco Moco includes three homemade patties grilled with onions and served with rice and macaroni salad (you can choose green salad if you prefer that instead). The patties are topped with 2 eggs cooked in the style of your choosing (we always get over easy – because a runny egg mixed with all of it, is well… the best) and a generous pour of brown gravy. If you’ve never had a Loco Moco before, you must try it, it’s definitely a go-to here. The patties were filled with flavor, the gravy was great and the egg, well – as soon as you brook the yolk, it spread all over the dish which is what we liked. Served hot and delicious.
A mix on the Loco Moco is their Chicken Katsu Moco. I LOVE a great Chicken Katsu Cutlet Moco (one of my favorite food choices anywhere) and I was so excited to try this one from Poi By The Pound. I requested Pork Gravy instead of their standard brown gravy and of course got my eggs over-easy. The chicken was cooked well and I loved the flavor of everything. Of course, since I don’t eat rice anymore, I opted for green salad as my side. I definitely was happy with this meal, even if I didn’t eat all of it. Did I mention their portion sizes were huge? The Chicken Katsu Cutlet Moco is not on the menu, so be sure to ask for it personally if you want to give it a try.
I did mention that Poi By The Pound is known as the “Authentic Hawaiian Food Restaurant” and while some may think the other foods I mentioned were “authentic”, they are really just local favorites that you can get here in Hawaii. So, I just had to share the beautiful display of Hawaiian food you can get with the Hawaiian Plate combo. My gosh, it includes so much food, you will surely be full before you leave. And, if you have never tried any Hawaiian food before, this would be a great way to check it out. Included in this combo is: Kalua pork, pork lau lau, chicken long rice (which is like a soup with chicken and rice noodles), lomi salmon (which is salmon, tomatoes and onion mixed together. Lomi in Hawaiian basically means to massage. Therefore, it is the salmon and other ingredients massaged together so the flavors mesh), poi, rice and mac salad. On the bottom, you see a green baby food like consistency which is the squid luau. That is one of my favorite dishes here. It’s basically squid and taro leaf simmered in coconut milk and brown sugar.
The Poke Bowl is a popular choice here in Hawaii and many locals will grab it and go. Poi By The Pound has their own version of a Poke Bowl which includes your choice of shoyu or spicy poke (or combination of both) and served over steaming white rice with a sprinkle of furikake (seaweed and sesame seasoning). Fresh ahi poke is definitely something that you must try and this one was delish.
You didn’t think we left out dessert, did you? Well, considering the portion sizes you get from this eatery, you could easily skip dessert and be extremely full. But we packed up our leftovers and ordered some popular yummies. The boys shared the Mud Pie (it was so big all three of them ate it together). The mud pie consists of a Kona Mud pie ice cream bedded on an oreo cookie crust and topped with whipped cream, chocolate, and caramel drizzle. It was so good that the boys said they were gonna order it the next time we came to eat here.
I went with the Taro Sundae. Come on, taro, poi, and coconut in one dish… anyone that knows me knows that I would jump to that opportunity in a heartbeat. The Taro Sundae originally comes with haupia (coconut) ice cream, taro chunks, poi, drizzled with chocolate, caramel syrup and topped with whipped cream and almonds. I opted to be a purist and go the haupia ice cream with taro chunks and poi only (which is what is pictured above).
I seriously fell in love with this dish after the first bite. This dessert seriously satisfied exactly what I would expect from a Taro Sundae and I definitely suggest checking it out… seriously!
The cost of the plates and desserts at Poi By The Pound are reasonably priced and you surely get your monies worth in every possible way. You will not leave this restaurant hungry, that’s for sure. Our server was a delight and very sweet and the last time we dined here (last year) we experienced the same kind and sweet service from that server as well. Food comes to the table hot and you will definitely enjoy a great meal here. If you are looking to satisfy your hunger with some local grinds or want a Hawaiian food mix, I definitely suggest checking them out. You’ll enjoy their food and be sure to share because you’ll have enough to share with a friend.
Hi friends. I hope you are all doing well. Today, I’m gonna get a little personal with all of you and share a little update on my weight loss journey. It’s been years in the making, but I’m super excited to have all of you on this journey with me. It’s like I’ve had a bunch of awesome cheerleaders all for me. If you are interested in learning a little about it, definitely keep on reading about my weight loss. This is just the beginning of this series and I plan to update all of you on this journey as I experience it. Also, I just released a video on my YouTube Channel so if you want the breakdown in video form, click this link and check out the video. So, let’s chit chat a little… shall we?
At the beginning of this year, I posted on Honeygirl’s World about how I needed to get going on a healthier me. Since October 2017, I felt the need to really get my health issues together and start working on being a better version of my self, physically and mentally. I’ll be honest, it hasn’t been an easy road. I had worked my butt off the last few months trying to get in shape and lose weight, but it’s been difficult and I haven’t been the easiest person to live with because of it.
Let me break a few things down for you… So, in November 2017, I decided I would cut out all the things that really were dragging me down (food wise). I stopped drinking my Cherry Pepsi (I’m glad the world didn’t come to an end because of it) and I ultimately stopped eating white rice (most rice for that matter) and pasta. Yup, I said it… pasta. Let’s just say that it was not an easy choice for me, but I was amazed at how easy it was to give them up when I look at myself in the mirror and I’m excited about my progress. There are days when I see white rice smothered in gravy or a giant slice of pizza topped with ooey gooey cheese and I just want to lose my marbles, but then I realize that I’ve come too far.
Here’s the deal… there is no such thing as a fad diet or a 30-minute exercise once a week that will help. It took me a long time, lots of money and many years of realizing that because I really struggled with my weight after having my sons. I wasn’t always big (though I did always have thunder thighs… lol) and so I really wanted to get myself back on track. I realized that after years of the struggle, I needed to really do this for my health, not just my looks. This epiphany was probably the one good thought I had in my mind and it has been a constant reminder of how I’ve been able to keep going on this journey (or lifestyle change).
“I am down over 50 lbs in about 8-10 months and I’m so excited to be able to shop in stores that carry regular sized clothing, instead of only plus sized clothes.”
So what am I doing? Well, I’m at the gym 3 to 5 times a week concentrating on not only cardio but also strength training. You don’t need to spend excessive amounts of time at the gym if you don’t have it and if you don’t have a gym, use what you do have. I signed up for the gym in March, but prior to that I was walking/running and jogging several times a week – averaging about a mile to three miles each time I went for a walk and tried to do that 3 times a week. I also work with my kettle balls and my own walls to help with building my muscle and keeping the muscles I have. There are a number of different exercises you can do while utilizing your own body weight as your option to strengthen your muscles. I like doing push-ups against the wall if I can’t make it to the gym and if I do make it to the gym, then I love doing pull-ups and using the different muscle toning machines available. Remember, that it’s all about using what you have, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t have a gym membership. I like it because it’s my time to myself, but if you don’t have that – use what you go. Run or walk the dog or your baby or even go on a hike with a friend or two (or three) if it helps get you mobile and outdoors.
Now, when it comes to food… that’s a little more difficult. I try to concentrate on the Keto diet since I did a liquid fast prior to getting my metabolism jump started. The Keto Diet and 21 Day Fix have been two diets or lifestyle changes when it comes to food that I know I can actually keep working at. They aren’t easy diets, but basically a way of changing your lifestyle to accommodate what works better for you. I concentrate on healthy proteins and fats at each meal so that I can keep my muscle lean. I also have cut out most sugars from my diet (of course many fruits and veggies have sugar so I try to be mindful of how much I eat) and carbs. Making this change did not happen overnight, but it has definitely gotten easier as time progresses. Sugar-free popsicles have been my best friend lately (because it’s been so hot here on Maui) and I am really loving protein ice creams like Halo Top. However, everything is best in moderation, so if I am gonna eat a few sweets, I will definitely be putting in more work at the gym or I make sure I only have a little in moderation. Remember my words – “Moderation is more than just the key, it will be your new way of life.”
“Moderation is more than just the key, it will be your new way of life.”
I couldn’t possibly sum up how to do all of this in just one blog post, so I am gonna wrap this up in a bit. But, before I do, I wanted to share with all of you that this lifestyle change is not easy, but it’s doable and it can work. It took me a long time of saying excuses and my shoulda-coulda-wouldasbefore I realized that I need to take action and keep at it before I’ll see results. Don’t worry, I’ll be here to answer all of your questions and I’ll also be posting more frequently about this journey so that I can offer you some tips, ideas and even food choices. My goal is to actually share this journey with all of you because the support from each of you means the world to me and it helps more than you realize.
Stay tuned for more updates as I discuss products I’m enjoying to help with my weight-loss and get healthy jourey and everything else.

Remember what I said earlier, about the point of view on Maui living (or Hawaii living for that matter) is usually not coming from a Hawaii native? Well, I meant it. I really want to share my thoughts with all of you as I have for 10 or more years. I love experiencing all that Maui and Hawaii have to offer and I can’t wait to embark on this journey and share with all of you. Reviewing Eateries that I enjoy here has been one of my favorite things to do on the blog over the years, so I’m excited to share so much more with all of you too.
Like I said before, this doesn’t mean the content you enjoy and love will no longer be here. You can still search and find your favorite posts and you’ll continue to see new ones… I’m just adding to my flair.
Wishing you all a warm summer and lots of paradise loving,

Because plastic surgery, in general, has become less stigmatized, I decided I wanted to learn more about it, so I did a little research on breast augmentation. What I found out is that breast augmentation is the top cosmetic procedure in the United States with over 300,000 surgeries performed in 2017 alone. From young 20-somethings to women in their 60s, and even 70s, breast enhancement is in high demand. I also found out that surgical techniques have advanced tremendously since early breast augmentations, so women can now enjoy better safety and better results.
Another important thing I discovered is that no 2 breast surgeries are alike. Which means, your surgery should be individualized to fit your needs. Before surgery, you’ll have a consultation with your surgeon, and the 2 of you will discuss your desired results, personal anatomy, and your lifestyle. These are all things the surgeon needs to know before the surgery and to help with deciding on what size implant to get. Once the surgeon knows all this important information, he or she will create a customized surgical plan based on your conversation.
Make sure to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon who has years of experience performing breast augmentations. Plastic surgery is not something to be taken lightly—you want the very best for your body.
I found out that choosing an implant is more than just picking a cup size; you must also consider shape, material, and profile. Implants can be either round or teardrop shaped. Round implants provide more cleavage and a “fuller” look, while teardrop implants more closely resemble the slope of natural breasts. Implants can be filled with a saline solution or silicone gel depending on your preference. The “gummy bear,” highly cohesive gel implants have become very popular because to many people they feel more like natural breast tissue. You need to also think about what profile you want. In this case, “profile” refers to how much your implants stick out from your chest. Different implants will give you a different profile.
Like so many things these days, you have a lot of options when it comes to what type of incision is used for placing the implants. Your surgeon will help you choose one that is right for you. Options include:
Transaxillary. In this procedure, the surgeon makes the incisions in the natural crease of the armpit, so no scar is visible on the breast. Also, breast and nipple sensation is preserved.
Inframammary. This option makes incisions in the fold under the breast. This type of incision is good for silicone implants but may have an impact on breastfeeding. If you plan on having children and breastfeeding in the future, be sure to tell your surgeon because that might affect what implant placement is best for you.
Periareolar. In this option, the incisions are made along the edge of the areola. The scar is less noticeable than inframammary incisions but may result in nipple numbness.
Perithelial. This is an approach that makes the incisions beside the nipple and within the areola. Like periareolar incisions, these incisions are less noticeable than inframammary incisions, but they can cause numbness in the nipples.
Once the incision is made, your surgeon will create a small pocket for the implant. This pocket can be made on top of or below the chest muscle. Doctors typically recommend below the muscle placement for women who have little existing breast tissue. This will provide more coverage, so the implants feel more natural.
The Keller Funnel is an innovative new tool to safely that precisely inserts your implants. Board-certified surgeon Dr. Shim Ching uses the Keller Funnel in his plastic surgery center in Honolulu. According to Dr. Ching, the Keller Funnel reduces the risk of infection, allows for a smaller incision, and is gentler than traditional insertion methods.
During the consultation, ask if your surgeon uses the Keller Funnel!
With any surgery, you want to know about how long it will take to recover. What I found out is that breast augmentation recovery has improved greatly over the years, and your surgeon can give you information on how much time you’ll need. But regardless of the recovery time, it is important to carefully follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions. Typically, they will provide a specific timeline and list of tips for your recovery period. Some of these tips include:
Clearing your schedule—give yourself time to relax in those first few days post-op
Asking a friend or family member to drive you home from surgery
Choosing button-up shirts that don’t require raising your arms
Keeping everything that you’ll need close by, so you won’t have to constantly stand up
If you are interested in breast enhancement, do some more research about it and book a few consultations to meet with reputable plastic surgeons. Don’t rush into anything—wait until you’re 100% ready! You should be doing this for you and NOBODY else.
