The boys and I have been enjoying our summer months together since my husband is usually working on the weekdays. Come on now, we live on Maui, which has been rated the number 1 Vacation Destination by Conde Nast many years in a row, so we do have a plethora of sites to see and lots of fun to be had. While we live on the mountain, we experience really hot days so I decided to pack the boys up into the car and take a drive up to Kula to cool down – since the air is much cooler there. Our journey led us to the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm, a place we have visited many times before – but it’s been years since I bought the twins here, so I decided it would be a perfect place to venture.
The Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm is located on the slopes of Haleakala and overlooks some of the most beautiful views on the South side of the island. It is a 25-30 minute drive away from the Kahului Airport (the main airport into Maui) and a popular spot for visitors to stop at and have lunch after watching the sunrise at Haleakala or hiking the crater. At one time, it used to be free to enter the Lavender farm, so I was surprised to see a guard house at the entry (it was not there my last visit a few years ago) and entry for adults is $2.00. It’s well worth the cost however. You can bring your own lunch and have a picnic or hike the grounds for a great adventure. The air is so cool up there, it was a perfect place for the boys and I to getaway to beat the heat.
There is a little shop that sells tasty delectables featuring the fresh picked lavender, but the boys and I decided that we would just take in the sites and cool down and head home to eat lunch instead. We walked around the gardens and admired the fragrant lavender as we took in the sites.
It was a short little adventure, but a beautiful day out so I took this opportunity to take some shots of the boys and my eldest son Kevin helped take a few photos of my casual outfit I wore.
The best part about our little drive and excursion today was that I was able to spend it with the boys. They go back to school in about 2 1/2 weeks and this summer break flew by too quickly. The twins are off to 1st Grade and Kevin is off to 7th Grade. With Football season starting for all three boys August 1st – I know that times like these will be few in between, so I’m glad we made great use out of our Summer break.

It’s been a few years since I have had the twins, well – almost 7 years to be exact and while they are growing too quick for me to fathom, my pregnancy with all of my children are still dear and near to my heart. Each pregnancy I have had have been challenges and that doesn’t count the numerous miscarriages I have had over the years. So – when I look back at those memories, I’m always thankful for the little keepsakes I have from that time. Recently my family and I were introduced to the My Baby’s Heartbeat Bear, a company that offers adorable stuffed animals (bears, monkeys, giraffes, hippos and more) that come with a heart shaped recording device. I thought the idea was such a wonderful thing to have as a mother or for any loved one, that I wanted to share it with you.
So – what is the My Baby’s Heartbeat Bear?
The My Baby’s Heartbeat Bear is a cute and adorable stuffed animal in available in a variety of types – bears, monkeys, giraffes and so much more. The stuffed animal comes with a heart shaped recording device that a mommy can take the device to their ultrasound appointment and use it to record the sound of their baby’s heartbeat in utero. The recorder is t hen inserted in the stuffed animal (through a Velcro and drawstring closure in the back) and you can simply press it at anytime to hear this precious sound.
There are more than 16 cute creatures to choose from – we got the Monkey, because – well, monkeys are adorable. Baby’s Heartbeat Bear was created by Purusha Rivera, an OBGYN Ultrasound Technician who wanted to make the experience more special. The bears are sold online, in hospital gift shops and at ultrasound studios across the country. Each My Baby’s Heartbeat Bear kit comes with your stuffed animal friend and a red “heart” recorder. You can order a second recorder to include a voice message from someone special if you would like. You can easily capture 20 seconds of your baby’s heartbeat or in our case, I recorded my voice telling the twins good night, saying I love you and reminding them to say their prayers. At the touch of your Baby’s Heartbeat Bears belly, your recording will play.
The My Baby’s Heartbeat Bear makes an excellent shower gift and a great addition to the nursery decor. It’s safe for children 3 and older and will also become a source of fascination for growing kids who love to know what they were like as babies. The bear is so easy to use and the little red heart recorder is as simple as pretty the button to record. The stuffed animal is crafted from the softest, highest quality fleece-like material and polyfill. It’s soft and perfect for cuddling.
Since I’m not expecting a new baby any time soon – I thought this would be the perfect addition to the twins collection of stuffed friends. They loved him and absolutely cherish the fact that they can hear my voice any time they want. This is especially ideal on those nights when they are having a hard time sleeping or a bad dream… because just a press of Monk’s tummy and my voice will soothe them right back to sleep.
I wanted to share My Baby’s Heartbeat Bear with all of you, my beautiful readers because this wonderful stuffed friend can mean so much more to many people than just recording a baby’s heartbeat during an ultrasound. As I mentioned before, I use it as a way to calm the twins at night so they can hear my voice, but as a mother who has also lost children through miscarriage, I know how much this keepsake could bring happiness and peace to someone who has suffered similar lost.
A mom named Kailee reached out to My Baby’s Heartbeat Bear. Her baby was dying and she hoped to make a recording of her daughter’s heartbeat before she passed away. With a video of the baby’s heartbeat, the My Baby’s Heartbeat Bear team was able to preserve the sound of Kailee’s daughter’s heart so she will have a memory to treasure forever.
My Baby’s Heartbeat Bear and the creator – Purusha Rivera offer a Gifting Program for those that could use this wonderful gift. And, you never know what this could mean for another mom, dad or loved one. You can learn more about the Gifting Program here and watch some videos from those that benefited from this wonderful Gift. (P.S. They are tear jerkers, so grab your kleenex)
My Baby’s Heartbeat Bear is a wonderful gift for anyone expecting a beautiful child to come into this World or anyone else. I highly suggest this gift to anyone that could benefit from it and our new monkey friend named “Monk” has bought many days of joy since he has joined our family. These lovely friends retail anywhere from $29 – $40.00 depending on the style and type you get and as I mentioned before, they are made well and are soft and ready to cuddle.
Do you know someone who could benefit from a new friend? Head on over to http://mybabysheartbeatbear.com/ and take a look at all of the wonderful stuffed animals they have available. If you are looking to pick up a gift for a soon to be mom or a loved one, I highly suggest checking them out. After my sons have had Monk the last month, I realize how much they love and appreciate him and I know that I will be ordering from My Baby’s Heartbeat Bear for years to come for loved ones to cherish.

As a child growing up in Hawaii, you could find Aloe Vera plants everywhere and anywhere you could think of, including our backyard. My dad used it to treat our burns and sunburn during the summer and other medicinal uses, but I had never heard about drinking aloe water until a few years ago, maybe because I didn’t pay attention to it much or it wasn’t told to me directly. With my sons in full sports mode for summer (we are finishing up basketball season and going into football season in about a month), we always try to ensure that we keep all of our boys fully hydrated and ready to play in the hot summer sun. Today, I share with you my thoughts and my son Kevin’s on Detox Water, a Bioactive Aloe Water.
Detox Water is a mother inspired drink created by Founder Kenneth Park. In his childhood days Kenneth’s mother had experienced serious digestive issues and no medication worked in trying to heal her ailments. A doctor she seen suggested trying aloe. By adding aloe water to her diet, she not only resolved her stomach problems, but she improved her immune response to the on-going stomach pains. After realizing the plethora of benefits she experienced from ingesting aloe, Ken’s mother shared her smoothies with the rest of the family. Each morning with breakfast she would serve her delicious aloe-filled smoothies, blended with fruits and yogurt to neutralize the plant’s naturally bitter taste.
Detox Water is actually the re-launch of the business that Kenneth started in his dorm room at Babson College. In 2012, he created Superleaf Organic Aloe Juice and sold cases on campus, while juggling classwork and business. While it was quite successful – Superleaf drink was similar in variation to existing aloe drinks on the market – which did not deliver all the potential health benefits of truly bioactive aloe vera. After going back to the grind and working everything out, Detox Water became what it is today.
“Detox Water was born in the spirit of my mom and is testament to a strong commitment to health I believe in aloe vera’s healing properties because it healed me, prepared me for every day. I created Detox Water to share my experience with you, help you heal from the inside out.” – Kenneth Park (Founder, Detox Water)
Detox Water is available in three different delicious flavors – Original, Pinamint and Mangaloe. Each bottle contains 350mg of ACTIValoe aloe gel flakes with no less than 10% aloe polysaccarides by dry weight. I know it’s a lot of technical talk – but basically, that means it’s comparable to drinking a shot of the most extensitively researched and clinically-proven pure aloe juice. Each bottle is filled with electrolytes and vitamins to help replenish and restore your body with electrolytes, vitamin c and a full range of vitamin b’s. What also makes this so wonderful is that Detox Water is made without the use of artificial colors, flavors and preservatives. The aloe water is able to provide healthy hydration from the best of what nature has to offer. Detox Water is just 15 calories per serving and is rejuvenating, refreshing aloe water paired with organic and natural flavors. It’s literally something that helps to make you feel great and not guilty.
My entire family has been loving Detox Water – so much so that we have already repurchased a case for us to share. Each case retails for $45.00 (12 bottles). My son Kevin however, has been loving Detox Water as a way to re-hydrate after his basketball games. Most of the gyms here in Hawaii are old and many of them do not have air circulation through out. After an extensive game my son’s shirts are drenched in sweat and he’s beyond exhausted. Drinking Detox Water that has been chilled is a great way to hydrate and really just give his body back the nutrients he lost while running about the court.
“Detox Water tastes GREAT! The Mangaloe is my favorite but all of the flavors taste really good. After one sip I feel hydrated and refreshed. I love to drink a few sips of this during half-time to get my energy back and give me the extra electrolytes my body needs to recover from an intense game. I have never tried aloe water before, but you can’t taste any bitter flavor at all. It’s delicious and I really enjoy it.” – Kevin
As a mother, I try to instill proper care of your body and health to all of my children. We are all busy bodies in our household and by teaching my sons at a young age that caring for your well-being is important, I’m hoping it will continue on with them as they become adults and well into their life. I also suffer from ailments of health and have found after drinking Detox Water, it has improved my issues with my stomach, my IBS and other problems I have been experiencing. I’m not a doctor, but I do notice that things have improved with my health, and of course – my son noticed immediately after drinking his first Detox Water how his body felt rejuvenated.
I received Detox Water over a month ago and my family and I have really tested the products for a long period of time to see it’s benefits. I’m beyond impressed and as I stated before, we have already placed an order for replenishing our water. I have never tried anything like it before and I didn’t think it would taste as good as it did.
If you are interested in trying Detox Water for yourself and getting you a case – you can do so by checking out their website. You can opt to do a single purchase of a Detox Water case or sign up for their Delivery Subscription and get 20% off your orders. I haven’t found anywhere local that sells this water as of yet, so we have to order our case online. However, it’s worth it if you are looking for Immunity boosts and other benefits like skin health & anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory and heart health help. I have been really liking how it has helped my stomach, my blood pressure and my immune system.

When it comes to cleaning our teeth, I’m the warden in our house and I’m constantly on top of the tooth brushing and cleaning each day. But, I also believe that brushing your teeth shouldn’t just be a habit you develop, but it should be fun and you should want to clean your teeth several times a day. I think the boys share a similar attitude towards dental hygiene as I do. They love to go to the dentist (I remember as a kid hating to go) and they enjoy brushing and flossing each day as much as I do. A few months ago I had the opportunity to try the Foreo ISSA Toothbrush and Foreo ISSA Hybrid brush head and really enjoyed it so I wasn’t surprised when all three of my boys were drooling over the new gadget I got to try. To our surprise, we got a wonderful email from Foreo asking if we would like to give their Mini Toothbrushes a whirl and today, the twins are talking about their experience with the toothbrushes and how they like them. I’m excited that the twins get to try the Foreo ISSA Mini Toothbrushes because I think it will be a great tool to have… now I just have to save up so my oldest son Kevin can get one for himself and big Kevin too. lol
The Foreo ISSA Mini Electric Toothbrush is specially designed for kids (or the kid in you). Like the Foreo ISSA (which I reviewed previously and you can read about here), the ISSA mini brings color and brightness to your teeth cleaning with a fun and bold silicone design that includes their innovative Sonic Pulse Technology. This toothbrush is suitable for ages from 5+ which makes it ideal for the twins since Luke & Isaiah are 6.
The ISSA mini electronic toothbrush combines Sonic Pulse Technology that includes soft silicone bristles, resulting in extremely gentle yet effective cleaning of your child’s teeth. This helps to protect the teeth and gums from over-brushing while keeping your teeth squeaky clean and promoting a healthier mouth overall.
What is so great about the Sonic Pulse Techology for the ISSA mini? The ISSA mini’s silicone bristles channel 9,000 high-intensity pulsations per minute to create micro-sweeps that effectively and gently clean the teeth and gums.
Retailing for $119.00 – the Foreo ISSA Mini Electric Toothbrush comes in four fun colors and the boys got Mango Tango (Orange) and Summer Sky (turquoise). Each toothbrush comes with a 2-Year Limited Warranty and a 10 Year Quality Guarantee. While it is specifically designed for children, I actually find that the brush head is a great size for my own mouth and like the size of the smaller brush in comparison to my adult version of the Foreo ISSA.
Most dentists suggest that anyone brushing their teeth brush for at least 2 minutes, 2x a day. The ISSA mini features a Smile Helpers “Glee” and “Glum” to keep your child’s brushing routine on target. You’ll see the “Glee” after 2 minutes of brushing (happy face) and the “Glum” will light up if you haven’t brushed for the 2 full minutes. You will also see the “Glum” if you haven’t brushed in over 12 hours making this a fun tool for the boys to keep track of their brushing habits. The boys look forward to seeing the happy face when they are done brushing.
ISSA Mini replacement brush heads come in two different types – the ISSA mini Hybrid ($19.95) which is used for heavier plaque buildup since it has PBT polymer bristles that deliver more vigorous cleaning while the silicone bristles remain gentle on the gums and the ISSA mini replacement brush head ($24.90) which is made from medical grade silicone and lasts for one whole year. Our household replaces our toothbrushes every three months, so I love that the Foreo ISSA mini brush head replacements are not only affordable, but good for a whole year. The natural properties of silicone and PBT polymer harbor less bacteria which also means you get a more hygienic brush head and overall better oral health.
“I love my toothbrush. It feels like little scrubbies are cleaning my teeth and my teeth squeak when I’m done. I want to make sure I get a happy face each time I brush.” – Isaiah
“My toothbrush makes brushing my teeth fun. I love the color of my toothbrush and the brush feels really soft and smooth. I love that it cleans my teeth, and gets all the germies out. I like the way my teeth feel and my gums are getting hand massages by the toothbrush.” – Luke
What makes the ISSA mini so great for my family is the gentle silicone that is used to create this product. The ISSA mini brush head consists of soft and flexible silicone bristles that don’t scratch tooth enamel or damage gum tissue. This makes this the perfect brush for children’s softer tooth enamel and for more sensitive teeth and gums. I also love that this unit is completely waterproof (I wish my sink and countertops were too – lol, if you have kids, you understand) and the ISSA mini is ergonomically designed to be easy to hold with a built-in timer and 3D flexible brush head to reach every part of the mouth.
We also wanted to mention the Foreo ISSA mikro which is currently in Pre-Sale. Available in five different colors, the ISSA mikro is made specifically for babies and is the only baby toothbrush to combine silicone bristles with gentle sonic pulsations, making it a safe, effective and fun way to teach your children to brush their teeth. Suitable for children ages 0 to 4, the soft silicone bristles deep clean teeth and the sonic vibrations are delicate to help soothe gums providing relief from teething pains. The brush comforts and calms babies making brush hassle free. Check out the ISSA mikro and their presale specials that are going on right now.
Overall, the boys absolutely enjoy their Foreo ISSA mini as much as I enjoy my ISSA. They have been using it for a few weeks now and I have noticed that they have a little competition in the bathroom to see who gets their happy face to come on first. It’s fun and the colors would make anyone excited to brush their teeth. As I mentioned before, I also own the adult version – the Foreo ISSA and it has made such a difference in the way I clean my teeth. I do not use mine exclusively – I have a few other brushes I use in combination with it, but my gums have been so healthy because of it. The twins (Luke & Isaiah) have been loving the little massages they get when brushing their teeth and they tell everyone about their cool toothbrushes. I have noticed that their gums look healthy and their dentist says he thinks this was a good addition to their dental hygiene.
If you have been on the fence to picking up something like this for your kids, I highly suggest checking it out. They are costly, yes – but considering the benefits, you have something that will be worth it. Did I mention you only have to charge it for an hour and the charge lasts for 200 uses? Yes, I consider this a lifesaver for sure. Foreo is easily becoming a household name here and we love the products we have and will continue to support the brand and their products. I have tried many different things that I consider to be gimmicky but we are loving the products Foreo offers and look forward to trying out more.
Do you think this may be something you’ll invest in for your kids? Have you tried the Foreo ISSA toothbrushes before? You can purchase these products and learn all about them on their website here.

I’m a huge lover of soft and cuddly things and teddy bears or stuffed animals are no exception. As a child, I still remember my stuffed dog I called “Dukie Dog” and I had him until I was 18 (it was a gift to me on my first Christmas) and my very big (bigger than me) stuffed teddy bear I got from my husband on our first Christmas we had together, almost 20 years ago. There is something comforting about a stuffed animal or teddy bear and you can’t help but smile when you hold one in your arms. Having children, I instilled in them that having a stuffed animal buddy is a great way to grow up – my eldest son still has his Wicket and Horse we got on a trip to Disney World when he was just 6 months old… I have patched them both on many occasions, stuffed them with fluff and even added more hair to the bald spots – lol. The twins have their own set of stuffed friends as well and they have take them and their blankies cross country and to even visit President Obama in the White House. My sons love their cuddly friends.
Recently I was introduced to a brand new company that makes gift giving sweet. They offer these fun and adorable teddy bears in a unique gifting way. Teddy Canz offer cute, very plush and soft teddy bears that come in really cool designed cans. Each bear comes with a theme and today I’m going to be sharing our new friend with all of you.
A New Spin on an Old Favorite!
There are at least 10 different designs available to choose from Teddy Canz. The boys received “Bear and the City” who they have named Teddy. He is a sweet little friend dressed denim shorts and a cool looking hoodie that go perfectly with the theme of his can which is the city streets. This is the perfect little guy for the boys and they have been absolutely loving him since he arrived.
Don’t worry about your teddy bear being stuffed or hurt while inside of his can. They fit well inside and fluff up nicely once they come out. Our can was bent a little in shipping, but Teddy was well cared for and nice and safe on the inside. He wasn’t mashed at all while in his container. The Bear and the City that we received is really really well made. If I had to commend the company on the quality of the bear, I definitely think it’s stellar. His stitching was well in tact when we took him out of the can and he is absolutely soft and perfect for cuddling. The twins noticed immediately how soft he was and they couldn’t wait to snuggle up with him.
The twins have absolutely loved Teddy Canz since he arrived and have been taking turns sleeping with him and carrying him around each day. The can can be used to store your new friend if you would like, but the boys chose to keep it on their shelf to hold some of their toys. Honestly, he’s so cute, I don’t know who would want to store him away – unless they were using him to collect.
Teddy Canz would make an awesome gift for anyone, child or adult alike. The company offers custom designs should you be interested in doing something fun for your company or for an event and if you decide to choose the styles available, there are at least 10 to choose from. Teddy Canz retails for $24.99 each and shipping is also reasonably priced (about $6.50 for USPS Priority Shipping).
Designs available from Teddy Canz include:
- Story Time
- Comfy Spa
- It’s a Boy
- It’s a Girl
- Get Well Soon
- Story Time
- Dog Gone It
To get your own Teddy Canz or to check out the selection and get more information, visit Teddy Canz at TeddyCanz.com. You can also follow the brand on Instagram and check out all the children and adults that have found new friends from Teddy Canz.
So – whether a parent or a child or someone who just absolutely loves adorable things… Teddy Canz offers you a variety of new friends to take home. Do you like this fun idea of Teddy Canz? Are there any styles you think you may want to pick up for yourself or as a gift? Comment below and let me know.
I want to thank Teddy Canz for making two twinnies happy with their new buddy!

It’s Good Friday! I can’t believe that we are about to be celebrating Easter in a few short days and the boys will be heading back to school after having the last week off with me. It seems like the time is ticking away. I know, I know – I say that more often than not, but I can’t help but feel like I’m stuck in an egg timer that speeds up every time I need a moment to really smell the roses. I’m glad I had this time with the twins all week, though they have absolutely kept me on my toes and I feel like I ran the Boston Marathon. My eldest was off to Day Camp all week as a part of a program that he takes part in so the twins and I kept each other busy. Let’s just say there were a lot of books and reading, Legos and food involved, haha! I also took the twins to the doctor for their yearly physical this week and I was off to the doctor the other day to check on my insides. I’m kind of over doctors lately – well, I’ve always been… but the stress level has my brain completely consumed as of late – more on that later. Well, it’s TGIF which means we are just going to enjoy the moments we have the rest of the week… right?
So, here’s what’s going on currently in my life.
Drinking… Water! Yes, we all know I drink water daily, but after my recent doctor’s appointment that is what I’m kind of stuck with. Looks like my Gold Card from Starbucks will be taking a backseat in 2016. Stupid Blood pressure – errrr.
Eating… Well, I wish I were eating a slice of pizza, but since it’s currently breakfast I’m having my green smoothie. What does it consist of you ask? Well… kale, spinach, banana, coconut milk, blueberries and strawberries, almonds and a protein powder additive.
Feeling… Absolutely EXHAUSTED! It may be because of my blood pressure being sky high lately, but I am spent. With the boys home on Spring Break, I’m a bit behind on normal blog stuff, YouTube stuff and overall – but hey, I’m enjoying every minute of it.
Listening… Common Kings. It seems like I have been pulling up their channel on Pandora or Amazon Prime Music a lot lately. Nothing like some awesome local Hawaii roots to set the mood.
Reading… Well – thankfully I’ve been able to get caught up on some magazines from last month. I finished a few books in February so I haven’t picked up anything new. But, I plan to find something interesting and get started on reading something soon. We’ll see – maybe another Book Talk in the works in a month or so.
Watching… Criminal Minds, Little Women L.A., Bring It, and looking forward to Empire. Can you believe the last episode of Criminal Minds? I am still unsure I’ll like the demographic of the team since Derek Morgan will no longer be a part of it… we shall see if I’ll continue watching past this season. I’m looking forward to the new season of Empire though… man – it couldn’t come quick enough.
Loving… Peasant style tops. I have been eyeing them a lot lately and it’s been at least two years since I purchased one so I’m really looking into adding some new ones to my wardrobe. I just picked up this one here in black so you may see it featured here in the coming weeks. You know me, when it comes to clothes – I dance to the beat of my own drum.
Wanting… A beautiful spring season. I love Spring and it is my favorite time of year but with the weird Vog in the skies, it seems like our breathing and my asthma may not be happy. I wish for a beautiful spring filled with dew drops and daisies and beautiful weather with light showers to keep our grounds and greenery lush. I’m not asking for much, am I? lol
Contemplating… Change! The red of my hair has since faded and I’m kind of over it. I have been considering going lighter since the grey that graces my locks is really prominent. We shall see.
Working on… Life! I realized that over the last few years my blog went from being a lifestyle site to being about beauty and over the last year I have been making a change to make this place a lot more personable. Yes, it’s taking me some times… especially since I have established so many awesome beauty contacts, but I miss the old Honeygirl’s World and strive to get it back to that place once again in 2016.
Excited for… Did I mention Empire??? lol J/K. On the real though, I’m excited to have a four day weekend with my husband and sons, family time truly is the most important. I’m excited for some Pastele Stew this Easter Sunday – my husband makes it from scratch. And, I’m excited for where ever 2016 is taking me – so far… just three months in, it has been awesome.
On the blog this week and YouTube Channel I discussed many different things. I didn’t get a post up every day this week, but either way – you can check out this week’s wrap up below:
So that’s it for the week! Those of you that are currently on Spring Break, I hope you are having as much fun as I am. And, those that celebrate Good Friday and/or Easter, I’m sending you many blessings for a wonderful weekend. I’ll be spending time with my four favorite men in my life… pictured above are three of them. Have a wonderful weekend and God bless!

The boys started their Spring Break a few days ago and we have been trying to make use of all the activities we can get in while we have some time together. The weather has been so weird the last week, storming one day, drizzles the next and then warm but breezy… so we’ve been trying to get in some outdoor time while the weather is reasonably nice.
On Saturday we went to the park to play on the playground and throw the balls around some. The boys love any form of sports so it is always nice to get out and toss the baseball or basketball around and just enjoy the warm sun. The great thing about our boys is that they are so content with just having family time together – that it doesn’t matter where we go or what we do so long as we are doing it as a family. Since the boys tend to spend more time with me then their dad with his work schedule, they look forward to weekends at the moment since their daddy has that time off currently.
Isaiah absolutely loved tossing the ball around with is daddy and brothers. Each of the boys have their own gloves so we like to play catch when time permits to help build their eye and hand coordination – but also because it’s really fun.
With basketball season for my eldest Kevin starting in a week, it’s always nice to get out and have some park time. Once basketball starts – just like football, most of our family time is consumed by practice and games. Because of this we try to take advantage of our time together before sports’ season starts because sometimes the hustle and bustle of everyday life and activity can take over and leave us without much time to ourselves together as a family.
“Mommy, take my picture!” Luke is such a ham. All my boys are but Luke will always ask me if I can take his picture or if he can be on camera. I love it and love that he has such an outgoing personality.
It was nice to get out to the park and playground for a few hours on Saturday and I’m glad we were able to utilize the nice weather. It was a bit chilly and breezy, but the sun was still shining enough for us to get in some good play time. I especially love that the park is so large that we can literally throw our blanket on the ground or pull out our fold up chairs and just have a nice relaxing day. I have one more week with the boys on Spring Break (they were given 3 extra days this year) so I’m looking forward to making the best out of it as I can. My big boy is going off to a Spring Break program at the school which starts tomorrow so he’ll be in school from 8am – 3pm each day for the next 5 days. It will be mostly the twins and I while the hubby is at work. Either way, we are going to make the best of it.
Ooh – first day of Spring was yesterday too… one of my favorite seasons! 😉
Let’s face it, raising a child at any age can be a challenge – but the first few years of a child’s life are a learning curve. As my children grow each and every day, I’m reminded of how different they are – all three of them have their own personalities. My eldest, well – as a baby and a toddler, he was very easy going and after he was a month old, he pretty much slept through the night allowing me to get rest and still go to work full time while caring for him. The twins… well, that’s a whole different story. They were up at all hours of the day and night and at different times. They nursed differently – though they did everything together and still do – they have consistently kept me on my toes, well – they still do that too. But, one things for sure… as a parent, while all advice may not be specifically geared to be a “fix all” for each child, they are great stepping stones for you to develop a pattern and a solution to fit your needs. Today I share with you a really cool and interesting read called The Natural Baby Sleep Solution by Polly Moore, Ph. D. This book has been a great addition to my library and I’m going to share a few of my thoughts with you on it today.
If you are a mother… then you know that we have all been there… a time when we are feeling a heavy dysfunction and disarray that plagues our daily thoughts. The lack of sleep due to a crying or fussy baby or the stress of feeling like we have failed. Mothers (fathers too) often experience these times within the first year of their child’s life or right around the age when your baby starts teething. It’s natural but no matter how many times I tell you that we’ve all been there, it doesn’t make the situation any better. The Natural Baby Sleep Solution literally is the answer to many parents’ prayers. This book is written by a scientist whose mind is naturally geared towards scientific research and connection, but also by a mother who an relate to how we as mothers are feeling. Polly Moore understands the ins and outs of being a parent and this book is a great approach at working a little bit of experience, science and research and love into an equation that parents have struggled with for years.
By utilizing the N.A.P.S. Plan in the book – Polly Moore explains that this simple plan will help in encouraging longer sleep periods. It’s basically a mother’s natural instinct in science form. The plan is relatively simple: When your baby wakes up – keep a clock for 80 minutes and then start winding your baby down for a nap when it hits that time point. By the 90 minute mark, get your child to bed. Even if the naps are short, back to sleep at 90 minutes to establish not only a routine but a cycle.
When my twins were younger, they NEVER took a nap. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not because I wanted to keep them up – but because they just wouldn’t fall asleep. Later in the day when they were beyond exhausted, they either fell asleep unable to keep their eyes open or they were so wired from the lack of a nap, they stayed up all night. The Natural Baby Sleep Solution allows you to use a few tips in guiding your child into sleeping so that they know what it feels like to be tired and want a nap – therefore giving your child the skills needed to stay asleep longer at night. The concept is genius and one I wish I had known about prior to having my children. Should I have any more kids in the future, I’m glad that I was able to read this book and hope to incorporate the teachings in this book for later.
By reading this book, I think it’s a great asset in teaching a parent to watch for the signs of when a child is ready to rest. It’s not a sleep training type of book but instead gives you the tools to be able to better see the cues from your child to help with that type of situation. It also helps in you guiding your child to be able to sleep easily – “goodnight” and close the door, etc. Like with anything else you read that are “baby help” books, you must have an open mind and know that what might work for you and your child may not work for others and vice versa. Again, each person is an individual – as are their children and books like these should be used as a guide and a tool – not a strong arm.
I enjoyed reading through The Natural Baby Sleep Solution by Polly Moore, Ph.D. and I am glad I was able to experience this book and the N.A.P.S. Plan. I look forward to including this book for other mothers at baby showers or baby gifts as I think it would make for a great read for anyone with a new born or little one. I look forward to trying out some of this technique should I have any more children or nieces/nephews in the future.
Have you read or heard of this book before? If so – what are your thoughts, if not – is this something you could utilize or incorporate into your mommy guide library?

I know, I know… we are literally 24 hours away from saying good-bye to 2015 and I’m finally getting around to posting our family photos for the holiday and winter. I honestly don’t know what happened the last two weeks, it’s like life took a turn into the twilight zone and I’m still trying to recoop from the crazy. I look forward to family photos but I regretfully have to admit that we have slacked in this department a lot and this is the first family photo since 2013 – yikes. With a crazy on going presence in social media, sometimes I forget how important it is to have at least one really good photo for the year to document the growth of not only our children, but our life.
This year’s family photos were a challenge because our schedules are all over the place. I honestly didn’t think that I would be able to gather the five members of my family (myself included) in the allotted time to get it done. Normally, I will set up my camera and tripod and use my remote to shoot our photo, but this year – the remote died and I had to use the timer on the DSLR to get it accomplished… let’s just say – it was an interesting morning. lol Running back and forth between the camera and the group – my husband and I were not only exhausted, we had several images to capture before we got some good ones. Having children in the photo is no easy task as well as some were blinking, making faces or had their eyes closed – story of my life, lol.
For this year’s photo, we decided it would be casual and relaxed, much like our life has been the last year. Since we are so busy with home and school and work, we really look forward to days where we can dress casually and just enjoy life. Since we live right off of the Golf Course in Pukalani, we decided that that would make a fabulous backdrop for our family photos. Running back and forth working with the timer on the camera was definitely a challenge but overall, I think they came out pretty nice and I’m glad that we were able to document this year with a few images.
The twins are using basic black t-shirts from Old Navy and Khaki cargo shorts with their shoes. My eldest is using a pair of jeans, a heather gray shirt from Old Navy and his shoes and my husband is using a Dickies button down shirt, Dickies khaki shorts and flip flops. For me, I decided to go with a pair of skinny jeans (YMI) and a black laced top from Forever 21. My scarf is one of my favorite Pashminas that I have had for at least 3 years now and I’m wearing a pair of black suede boots. My gosh, my hair sure does stand out, doesn’t it?
I absolutely love taking our photos each year, but I think for next year, I may enlist the help of a fellow blogger or friend/family member to help take the images so that we are not putting in so much work lol. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas Holiday and from our family to yours, we wish you a prosperous and blessed New Year.
