I often get asked what I do to my hair to have it grow so long and so fast or how I keep it looking nice.  The fact of the matter is, I have hated my hair my whole life and a few years ago I decided it was time to start taking my hair back, claiming it as my own and embracing every strand.  I use a number of different brands and products and while I do have some of my favorites that I return to time and time again, I have some new loves that I have been thankful for lately.  I’ve been asked time and time again to share my hair care secrets and honestly, I don’t consider them a secret… because they are basic and overall easy tips for keeping my hair looking great.

Before sharing all the details on the products I use an enjoy, let’s talk about the basics, shall we?  First off, I stopped using heat on my hair.  For years I flat ironed my hair religiously and no matter what products I used to help rejuvenate and keep it healthy, my locks were dry and desperate.  If I do use heat on my hair, it’s a few times a year (literally 3x or less) and other than that I dry my hair naturally (air dry) and wear my hair in its naturally state.  When it comes to maintaining the length, color, etc… well – those are subjects that are definitely individual preference, but honestly – I cut my own hair every 6-8 weeks (a trim to keep my ends healthy, especially since my hair grows so quickly) and I color my own hair.  Let’s get into detail about all of that.

Trim, Cut & Color…

Some people can get their hair professionally cut and colored in a quality salon, but since my hair is passed my waist in length and very curly, an good quality salon and stylist will run me about $325 – $400 for a great color.  That’s quite costly, so I pick up hair dye (if I feel the need for a change in color) and color my own.  When it comes to a standard trim which I do every 6-8 weeks, I will trim myself which is something I’ve done for years.  Once a year I will go into the salon and have a full layer and cut to help restyle or reshape my hair if I feel the need… otherwise, I stick to my normal “self trim” routine.  When it comes to coloring, I normally color my hair 2-3x a year but usually 2x a year is enough for me.  Since I have the natural gene pool to get gray hair early in my life, I do have gray hair consistently so I either color or leave it natural.  Coloring is huge maintenance for me so unless I’m going red or purple, I tend to choose a shade similar to my natural hair color.  I am a medium brown and during the summer my hair naturally lightens at least 2 shades so I try to stick to similar colors so that I don’t have to worry too much about maintenance.  If you want to spend the money on your hair to cut and color and go to the salon, please don’t let this post or paragraph stop you from doing so… that is just my preference.

Scrub a Dub that hair in the tub… cleaning routine…

I wash my hair about 1-2x a week.  I naturally have a dry scalp so over washing causes heavy dandruff and sensitivities regardless of the hair care products I use.  Dry Shampoo is my best friend (if I need it) but most the time 2x a week works out perfectly for my hair.  I don’t get an oily scalp at all, which is a huge deal for me… but I do get a dry scalp with over washing so I tend to stick to that routine.

When it comes to hair care products like shampoo & conditioner (any hair care for that matter), I use a plethora of products from Drugstore to Salon or Salon Quality brands.  It all depends on the ingredients that are listed in the product.  For a long time I have been really trying to find products that promote good hair health and moisture.  My hair drinks up moisture immediately so I need a lot of it.  While the scent or fragrance have a lot to do with what I use (due to my allergies) I like using products that offer my hair some extra love.

OGX products have been a huge hit with me lately.  I love that I can find them in the drugstore and that they work.  I use a lot of brands like HASK and Macadamia Oil as well many others, but currently – I’m using OGX in combination with my HASK.

The OGX Coconut Water Weightless Hydration Oil has been an absolute favorite of mine over the last month.  I use pure organic coconut oil in my hair on a daily basis and found that this hydration oil has left my curls quenched and feeling great without leaving my hair feeling heavy, sticky or oily.  It’s a light weight oil and really leaves my hair feeling fantastic.  Using in combination with the Curl Styling Milk to help keep my curls looking great and other OGX products, I have really been enjoying my hair.  I also love that these are so affordable which make keeping up with my hair routine easy on me and my pocketbook.

Protection, Treatment & Repair…

Of course, a good treatment or mask works well too.  I need a good mask that will leave my hair shiny and looking luxurious.  Recently I was introduced to the JOICO K-Pak Color Therapy Luster Lock Instant Shine & Repair Treatment.  This product has been so wonderful in keeping my hair looking healthy and keeping the shine, but also providing my hair with color protection that locks in my color for longer lasting brilliance.  I really enjoy this product and have been using it for about a month.  Since I can have coarse hair sometimes, I love concentrating this product on the ends and it treats my hair leaving it soft and shiny.

The Pineapple & Ginger Ultra-Revive Anti-Frizz Serum & Ultra-Revive Intensive Hair Mask from Giovanni have also been great additions to my hair care this summer.  Both products offer my hair nutrients to help keep my locks moisturized and hydrated.  These products help with the strength of my hair as well as protect from future damage leaving my hair hydrated, soft and feeling thicker.

Styling…

If you have been a reader of this site or follow my YouTube channel, then you know that when it comes to style, I wear my hair as simple as possible.  It’s either worn down in its naturally curly state, pulled up in a bun or worn in a braid.  Sometimes I’ll straighten it for a different look or curl it and sometimes I really add a little pizzazz and twist it up.  But, for the most part – if my hair is not in a bun, I’m wearing it natural.  When I’m wearing my hair naturally curly, I have been really enjoying LA Looks Nutra Curl.  LA Looks is a brand I have used for years (since I was rocking out the tsunami wave – surfs up… back in elementary school)  I recently was introduced to the LA Looks Nutra Curl which I have been loving.  A little of the product in my damp hair helps to keep my curls formed but this gel is lightweight and not sticky.  It provides hold without being crunchy and I’m really amazed at how much I enjoy it.

I think hair care is an individual thing.  What might work for me may not work for you and my hair care routine and products change up consistently.   As a blogger I have the opportunity to try out many different products – hair care included, so I do change up some of what I use.  But, I also love using many of the ones I currently have in rotation so they are constantly repurchased to replenish my stash and while I may not use them all the time, they are something I will continuously pull for when I need a no fuss, no muss kind of day.

Since my hair is so long, I like products that will keep my hair looking fresh, while still allowing it to look healthy.  And, while I do enjoy a good highend product, a drugstore alternative is always a great choice in my book too.  I’m simple and because of this I enjoy simple things.  What I have listed here may change tomorrow or next week or next month, but currently these are the products I’m loving and my secret to my hair at the moment.

What about you?  Do you switch up your products from time to time or have a few you pull for that may be your ride or die?  As I always love to say… Do You Boo… and find something that works and roll with it.

Great tips and picks! As a curly-haired girl, I love your product choices! I trim my own hair in-between salon visits, and often but not always, color my own hair.

    • Girl… yes, it’s always good to save a little money on those trims. I only go to salon 1x a year usually, I can’t afford it like I used to. lol

I love the color of your hair. It looks gorgeous and healthy. I am really loving the Joico K-Pak for Color Treated Hair. It is definitely making a difference for me. Glad to see it’s on your recommended list too

  3. I love your curls! It’s funny, we always want what we don’t have. I have straight hair, and have always wanted curls lol. My daughter has curls, and it’s the cutest thing ever. I also stopped using my flat iron as much, it’s SO damaging!

    • thank you 😉 My sister and brother have jet straight hair, my other sister has wavy and I have my dad’s curly hair. Curls are so fun when you know how to deal with them and I didn’t know for years and as a child my mom just pulled my hair back because it was a lot to deal with. I’m glad I have figured it out.

  4. I love that you’ve learned to love your hair. I know so many people who didn’t and tried to change it. I’m surprised you can let your hair airdry but then again your winters aren’t cold.

    • winters are the hardest to let air dry… but I wash my hair before the sun sets so that it dries good. But still, our winters don’t get below 50 degrees normally

I really want to try some OGX, maybe the Volume line!

Your hair is so incredible! I am so all over the place with my hair products, but I have loved what I’ve tried from Giovanni. The volume range (guava and papa, I think…) is great.
