As the season starts to change and the weather gets a tad bit chillier, the kiddos make their way back to school for the 2016-2017 year.  I remember as a kid, going back to school was my favorite time of year because it meant that I would have the opportunity to impress a new set of teachers and meet new friends.  My boys returned back to school at the beginning of August and while it has been a busy month so far, we are so excited and they have been absolutely loving school.  Today I share with you a few of their favorite finds for Back to School from affordable selections that we love and a few Celebrity faves.  Since back to school can be a fun time for kids or some may feel a bit uneasy, it’s the perfect time to pick up some new goods that will surely put a smile on your littles’ faces.

Going back to school after a fun summer break isn’t always easy for littles.  But, finding cool Back to School gear and supplies always make for a great start.  This year I wanted the boys to be able to develop their own sense of style (see the twins with their mohawks and sunglasses in the photo above? lol), but I also wanted them to select basics that would make their year fun and functional.

A quality made backpack is always an important part of back to school.  My eldest Kevin has a full schedule of classes and a heavy workload and homework sometimes.  It’s important that he has a backpack that can take him to and from school while still offering him the option to use for extra curricular activities and sports.  His choice of gear for this year was the Mountainsmith Approach 25 backpack (retail: $89.95).

This multi-pocket backpack is perfect for on the go for work and office, school or sports, or for a hike to climb the highest summit.  It features a dual-anel loader system which is idea for travel and trail), a front panel stretch-mesh pocket with daisy chain attachment loops, Anvil Airway ridged EVA back panel padding which make it comfortable on the back no matter what you carry in it, tool / trekking pole carry, side compression straps, dual side-panel mesh pockets, an internal hydration sleeve to hold 3 liters and an eleastic sternum strap and bit valve catch with a safety whistle.

This backpack is sturdy and unisex.  He has it in burgundy with brick red trim and it looks stunning and manly.  It’s comfortable on and Kevin can stuff this backpack with his school supplies and homework without worrying about it falling apart.  It’s a great backpack to have for anyone of any age and is not only for school but anything.  I plan to pick one up for myself as well since it will be great for my forest treks.

Luke opted for a fun and stylish backpack from Chooze.  Chooze is a brand selected and loved by celebrities alike.  Matthew McConaughey’s little girl is a huge fan of the versatile and affordable clothing and accessories Chooze offers.  Luke wanted the reversible ChoozePack in Quest (retail $43.95).

These ingenious packs feature a reversible design that has two functional sides to give your kiddos the power to choose which print to display.  It offers padded convertible straps (which Luke says are BOMB because they are so comfortable) and you can flip each strap from side-to-side to provide a different look.

Of course, no back to school list and gear would be complete without a way to carry your lunch and snack to and from school.  Kevin opted for something he could use for school and sports and went with the Mountainsmith Takeout insulated lunch pack (retailing $17.95).  It is the perfect sized carry-all for school, office and tailgating and has a look that any teen would enjoy.

To help carry his favorite mom’s delicious soups to school for lunch, he also selected the Hydro Flask Food Flasks.  He has them in the 12 oz. (retails for $29.99) and the 18 oz. (retails for $34.99).  These flasks are perfect to carry his favorite soups or a hot cocoa on those chilly mornings.  They fit perfectly into any lunchbox and are the perfect way to give kids a balanced healthy meal.  They offer improved temperature control technology and can keep hot food items made in the morning steamy until lunchtime.  He also enjoys holding his milk in these and pours a small box of cereal inside for breakfast on the go.

Luke & Isaiah decided that getting a traditional lunchbox was the way they wanted to go this year.  Each of them selected a Personalized Lunchbox from I See Me! (retailing for $29.99 each, currently on sale for $17.99.  Isaiah chose the Kick, Score, Run Lunchbox and Luke chose the Outerspace Lunchbox.  I See Me! is a brand and leader in personalized storyboks and gifts for kids, offering over 30 customizable book titles.  They also offer lunch boxes, stickers, growth charts, puzzles and so much more.  This fun company is a favorite of celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba and Brooke Shields.

Did I ever mention how much I enjoy Quinoa?  Well, I couldn’t resist putting some of these yummy snacks in the boys lunch boxes.  I Heart Keenwah snacks are perfect for any kiddo on the go or to pack with their lunch.  These Grab n Go (1.5 oz) snacks are great afterschool or lunch treats that taste great and are fun and nutritious.  I Heart Keenwah quinoa Clusters and Puffs are a healthy alternative to chips, crackers or sweets.  They are made of organic, Non-GMO ingredients.  They are a protein-rich superfood snack and gluten-free with the perfect crunch to fill and fuel your little ones bodies.  I love them myself and the boys think they taste great.  We find them at our local Safeway and Wholefoods at a reasonable cost.

Setton Farms International Premium Quality Snacks are also a great buy.  Our favorite are the Creme Brulee Blend that has cashews and toffee peanuts.  The Creme Brulee Blend incorporates all the creamy sweetness and crunch of the traditional Creme Brulee without the spoon.  It combines freshly roasted cashews and toffee peanuts with creamy butterscotch and white chips for an irresistible treat.  They are available in 5 oz resealable bags and available in major grocery store chains across the country – Price Chopper, Market Basket, King Kullen and more.  Setton Farms sent us a variety of treats to try but the Creme Brulee Blend is our favorite.  I hope we can find more of these in our local stores, so far I’ve only found them at http://www.puritan.com/ and I’ll need to be purchasing more soon.

When it comes to back to school, the boys are simple shoppers which makes my job easiest.  I remember as a child wanting to have all the pretty notebooks and pens for back to school supplies.  This year, when I did the boys school supply shopping, I also took advantage of some discounts for myself too.  Whether it’s Crayons or Pens, Notebooks and Planners or a tablet, the options are endless and come in a variety of price points.  Some of our favorites included:

  • Crayola Crayons 24 Pack – these are perfect on the go or to keep in the desk or at home.  When shopping during the sales you can get these for about $0.25 each.
  • Calendar or Planners – some of my favorites are the Blue Sky Planners from Target.  Of course, you can’t go wrong with an Erin Condren Life Planner, Happy Planner or your traditional binder planners like Kikki K, Filofax or Dokibook.
  • Pens – anyone who knows me, knows that I’m a huge pen collector.  Some of my current favorites include the Paper Mate Ink Joy Gel 0.7mm Pens, Pilot Frixon Pens and Pilot G2.
  • Pencils – Oh, how I love me some pencils.  Currently my favorites at the moment are any type of Mechanical Pencil with 0.5mm lead, BIC Pencil 0.7mm (the metallic ones have won me over), Dixon Ticonderoga #2 Pencils (have you seen the beautiful metallic ones?)  The Ticonderoga pencils are perfect for sketching as well as writing and erase cleanly.
  • Notebooks – Spiral, composition tablet… you name them and they are available in all kinds of paper style and cover design.
  • Folder / Filler Paper – ah, hand me a ream of college ruled please!  The twins use Wide Ruled, Kevin uses College Ruled.  I love that they are available from a variety of brands and price points.
  • Amazon Fire Tablet – for less than $50, you can get your hands on a Tablet that acts as a Reader or Internet hub.  The Amazon Fire Tablet is affordable but gives your student (or you) the option to get online, use amazing apps or just play games.  It’s definitely a great tool to have for the student or the mentor.

Now – you don’t need to pick up these particular items.  Honestly, I just wanted to include some of my favorite school supplies (or mommy supplies) because I was feeling a bit left out. lol

Last but certainly not least in our Back to School finds are some great threads.  Each child is an individual and I really love seeing them shop and select their own clothing, accessories and shoes – even their own hair cuts.  All three of my boys are simple guys but they do enjoy fun pops of color to their outfits and clothing selections.  Whether it be plaid shorts with a solid color shirt or fun hats and accessories, the boys take pride in finding something to wear that is not only comfortable and functional – but reveals their style.  Isaiah is absolutely enjoying his Rocket in Listen modern sneaker boot style shoes from Chooze ($54.95) and he wanted to show them to our readers today.

This modern sneaker boot style shoe comes with a side elastic gore added for comfort.  It has a signature dual design with easy access side zipper entry making the shoe easy to take off and put on.  It has padded throat for extra comfort and soft canvas uppers.  The flexible support offers comfort while the removable, padded, anti-stink insoles make these the perfect footwear for an active little guy.  They wipe clean easily with a damp cloth or can be washed in cold water and air dried.  Chooze offers a variety of footwear designs for both girls and boys and they are stylish and fun to allow your child to make a statement all their own.

Luke likes a shoe that can allow him to run and play with a little swagger and Kevin, well – if he’s not in his Nike Basketball shoes most of the time, you can find him in a pair of flip flops (rubbah slippahs as we call them here in Hawaii) and a cool pair of shades to finish off his look.  The boys were quite ecstatic to return back to school because the new school year meant that they were all beginning their football season for Pop Warner but most importantly, they got to go back to school and learn… I mean, hang out with their friends, just kidding lol.  The boys love school and love learning new things so shopping for new gear for back to school is always a huge highlight.

No matter what you decide to get for your child (or yourself) this Back to School season, make it fun and colorful and let it represent your own individual style.  Have your kiddos gone back to school yet?  If so, do they sport a relaxed and casual style or do they really like to dress up and have some fun?  Wishing all the students a wonderful 2016-2017 school year filled with lots of fun, friendships and learning.  From our house to yours… Aloha!

It’s Good Friday!  I can’t believe that we are about to be celebrating Easter in a few short days and the boys will be heading back to school after having the last week off with me.  It seems like the time is ticking away.  I know, I know – I say that more often than not, but I can’t help but feel like I’m stuck in an egg timer that speeds up every time I need a moment to really smell the roses.  I’m glad I had this time with the twins all week, though they have absolutely kept me on my toes and I feel like I ran the Boston Marathon.  My eldest was off to Day Camp all week as a part of a program that he takes part in so the twins and I kept each other busy.  Let’s just say there were a lot of books and reading, Legos and food involved, haha!  I also took the twins to the doctor for their yearly physical this week and I was off to the doctor the other day to check on my insides.  I’m kind of over doctors lately – well, I’ve always been… but the stress level has my brain completely consumed as of late – more on that later.  Well, it’s TGIF which means we are just going to enjoy the moments we have the rest of the week… right?

currently, life, love, family, motherhood, twins, boys, spring break 2016

So, here’s what’s going on currently in my life.

Drinking… Water!  Yes, we all know I drink water daily, but after my recent doctor’s appointment that is what I’m kind of stuck with.  Looks like my Gold Card from Starbucks will be taking a backseat in 2016.  Stupid Blood pressure – errrr.

Eating… Well, I wish I were eating a slice of pizza, but since it’s currently breakfast I’m having my green smoothie.  What does it consist of you ask?  Well…  kale, spinach, banana, coconut milk, blueberries and strawberries, almonds and a protein powder additive.

Feeling… Absolutely EXHAUSTED!  It may be because of my blood pressure being sky high lately, but I am spent.  With the boys home on Spring Break, I’m a bit behind on normal blog stuff, YouTube stuff and overall – but hey, I’m enjoying every minute of it.

Listening… Common Kings.  It seems like I have been pulling up their channel on Pandora or Amazon Prime Music a lot lately.  Nothing like some awesome local Hawaii roots to set the mood.

Reading… Well – thankfully I’ve been able to get caught up on some magazines from last month.  I finished a few books in February so I haven’t picked up anything new.  But, I plan to find something interesting and get started on reading something soon.  We’ll see – maybe another Book Talk in the works in a month or so.

Watching… Criminal Minds, Little Women L.A., Bring It, and looking forward to Empire.  Can you believe the last episode of Criminal Minds?  I am still unsure I’ll like the demographic of the team since Derek Morgan will no longer be a part of it… we shall see if I’ll continue watching past this season.  I’m looking forward to the new season of Empire though… man – it couldn’t come quick enough.

Loving… Peasant style tops.  I have been eyeing them a lot lately and it’s been at least two years since I purchased one so I’m really looking into adding some new ones to my wardrobe. I just picked up this one here in black so you may see it featured here in the coming weeks.  You know me, when it comes to clothes – I dance to the beat of my own drum.

Wanting… A beautiful spring season.  I love Spring and it is my favorite time of year but with the weird Vog in the skies, it seems like our breathing and my asthma may not be happy.  I wish for a beautiful spring filled with dew drops and daisies and beautiful weather with light showers to keep our grounds and greenery lush.  I’m not asking for much, am I? lol

Contemplating… Change!  The red of my hair has since faded and I’m kind of over it.  I have been considering going lighter since the grey that graces my locks is really prominent.  We shall see.

Working on… Life!  I realized that over the last few years my blog went from being a lifestyle site to being about beauty and over the last year I have been making a change to make this place a lot more personable.  Yes, it’s taking me some times… especially since I have established so many awesome beauty contacts, but I miss the old Honeygirl’s World and strive to get it back to that place once again in 2016.

Excited for…  Did I mention Empire???  lol J/K.  On the real though, I’m excited to have a four day weekend with my husband and sons, family time truly is the most important.  I’m excited for some Pastele Stew this Easter Sunday – my husband makes it from scratch.  And, I’m excited for where ever 2016 is taking me – so far… just three months in, it has been awesome.

NOTHING TO DISCLOSE

The boys started their Spring Break a few days ago and we have been trying to make use of all the activities we can get in while we have some time together.  The weather has been so weird the last week, storming one day, drizzles the next and then warm but breezy… so we’ve been trying to get in some outdoor time while the weather is reasonably nice.

On Saturday we went to the park to play on the playground and throw the balls around some.  The boys love any form of sports so it is always nice to get out and toss the baseball or basketball around and just enjoy the warm sun.  The great thing about our boys is that they are so content with just having family time together – that it doesn’t matter where we go or what we do so long as we are doing it as a family.  Since the boys tend to spend more time with me then their dad with his work schedule, they look forward to weekends at the moment since their daddy has that time off currently.

lifestyle, family, lifestyle blogger, twins, the park, maui, kula, up country maui,

Isaiah absolutely loved tossing the ball around with is daddy and brothers.  Each of the boys have their own gloves so we like to play catch when time permits to help build their eye and hand coordination – but also because it’s really fun.

lifestyle, family, lifestyle blogger, twins, the park, maui, kula, up country maui,

With basketball season for my eldest Kevin starting in a week, it’s always nice to get out and have some park time.  Once basketball starts – just like football, most of our family time is consumed by practice and games.  Because of this we try to take advantage of our time together before sports’ season starts because sometimes the hustle and bustle of everyday life and activity can take over and leave us without much time to ourselves together as a family.

lifestyle, family, lifestyle blogger, twins, the park, maui, kula, up country maui,

“Mommy, take my picture!”  Luke is such a ham.  All my boys are but Luke will always ask me if I can take his picture or if he can be on camera.  I love it and love that he has such an outgoing personality.

It was nice to get out to the park and playground for a few hours on Saturday and I’m glad we were able to utilize the nice weather.  It was a bit chilly and breezy, but the sun was still shining enough for us to get in some good play time.  I especially love that the park is so large that we can literally throw our blanket on the ground or pull out our fold up chairs and just have a nice relaxing day.  I have one more week with the boys on Spring Break (they were given 3 extra days this year) so I’m looking forward to making the best out of it as I can.  My big boy is going off to a Spring Break program at the school which starts tomorrow so he’ll be in school from 8am – 3pm each day for the next 5 days.  It will be mostly the twins and I while the hubby is at work.  Either way, we are going to make the best of it.

Ooh – first day of Spring was yesterday too… one of my favorite seasons! 😉

Honey

Who am I?

Well, it’s obvious that I am a blogger (just call me an editor – lol), Photographer, an art lover and self proclaimed gourmet food aficionado (otherwise known as major foodie) as well as a creative brain waiting to jump out and show the world what I can do.  But, most importantly – I am a Wife and Mother.

"Cut not the wings of your dreams, for they are the heartbeat and the freedom of your soul." - Flavia
“Cut not the wings of your dreams, for they are the heartbeat and the freedom of your soul.” – Flavia

I have a husband named Kevin who has been and continues to be my rock, my strength and my biggest supporter.  If you know anything about me, then you know that for years, I struggled to discover myself and who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do.  Through it all, our love has stood the test of time and through our ups and downs – through sleepless nights and times when we had no money, we persevered and looked past it all.  We continue to love one another, commit our hearts to each other and look forward to a lifetime of memories.

A year or so ago I was approached by a colleague that asked me a question that I never thought I would ever have to answer.  But, in answering her question I realized that our world is not what we consistently hope it to be.  While I constantly live in my own fairy tale, many are just longing for love.  Today I share with you her question and my response.

Friend:  “How can you be so in love with someone, after all these years… and talk about him as if you have a new found relationship – like teenagers?  You guys act like you are newly in love.”

My answer: “How can you not? When you give your love to someone, during your wedding vows or other – don’t you commit to them with all your heart and soul? Shouldn’t love be fun and interesting? Shouldn’t you live each day for one another – be there for each other and more importantly, love like you don’t have tomorrow. It’s different when you fall in love with someone and marry them. They are your best friend, your soul mate. Your love for them can only grow more and more as time passes.”

It’s corny – I know… but it’s true! This is who I am and what I feel inside.  There are times when I get so busy and wrapped up into being a wife and mother, that I often don’t pay attention to how strong my love is.  Sometimes, I find myself in extreme auto-pilot, living through each day as if I were a part of a robotic colony completing each task on automatic mode.  But, while those times can come more often than not, I know that I can always stop and be so thankful for where I am in life and how far it has taken me.

I also mentioned being a mother.  I have three beautiful boys and while they are all their own individual selves with their own personalities, they helped to mold me into the mother I am today.  Through many times of the utmost insanity, my boys have helped me to keep it all together.  I’m not gonna lie, being a mother is already a challenge and topping it off with three VERY active boys is icing on the cake.  My eldest (Kevin Ka’eo) is now 12 years old and is already going through that stage of being “too grown up” for his parents – yikes.  And, the twins (Luke & Isaiah) are now 6 years old with an agenda each all their own.  All of them keep me absolutely on my toes… between school functions, sports and just an overall lack of sleep – but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.  These boys are my love bugs, they have captured my heart forever.

10732023_1669002016706967_1642298932_n

You see, in life – we meet new people, gain new relationships and take on many challenges. I am who I am today because of those who have inspired me to be more than I could ever imagine. I would never change any of it – Never, ever!  I have a strength that many people cease to exude.  It’s not that they don’t have it, but merely because they don’t realize they do.

020 copy

The strength behind my soul is my family.  These four people in my life that not only provide the biggest support that I could ask for as a person, but the foundation of which my life succeeds.  I’m stronger because of them and for them and my soul, my heart is whole because of the love I have for them.  They say that love is what makes or breaks a person – it is what develops a person into who they become and what their future will hold.  If that’s the case, I think my future is bright and my soul is strong because I live a love that most people only dream of.

Wishing you all a wonderful day! Thanks for letting me pour out my heart and soul for all of you! xo

NOTHING TO DISCLOSE

I know, I know… we are literally 24 hours away from saying good-bye to 2015 and I’m finally getting around to posting our family photos for the holiday and winter.  I honestly don’t know what happened the last two weeks, it’s like life took a turn into the twilight zone and I’m still trying to recoop from the crazy.  I look forward to family photos but I regretfully have to admit that we have slacked in this department a lot and this is the first family photo since 2013 – yikes.  With a crazy on going presence in social media, sometimes I forget how important it is to have at least one really good photo for the year to document the growth of not only our children, but our life.

This year’s family photos were a challenge because our schedules are all over the place.  I honestly didn’t think that I would be able to gather the five members of my family (myself included) in the allotted time to get it done.  Normally, I will set up my camera and tripod and use my remote to shoot our photo, but this year – the remote died and I had to use the timer on the DSLR to get it accomplished… let’s just say – it was an interesting morning. lol  Running back and forth between the camera and the group – my husband and I were not only exhausted, we had several images to capture before we got some good ones.  Having children in the photo is no easy task as well as some were blinking, making faces or had their eyes closed – story of my life, lol.

2015 Family Photo

For this year’s photo, we decided it would be casual and relaxed, much like our life has been the last year.  Since we are so busy with home and school and work, we really look forward to days where we can dress casually and just enjoy life.  Since we live right off of the Golf Course in Pukalani, we decided that that would make a fabulous backdrop for our family photos.  Running back and forth working with the timer on the camera was definitely a challenge but overall, I think they came out pretty nice and I’m glad that we were able to document this year with a few images.

Our 2015 Holiday and Winter Family Photos

The twins are using basic black t-shirts from Old Navy and Khaki cargo shorts with their shoes.  My eldest is using a pair of jeans, a heather gray shirt from Old Navy and his shoes and my husband is using a Dickies button down shirt, Dickies khaki shorts and flip flops.  For me, I decided to go with a pair of skinny jeans (YMI) and a black laced top from Forever 21.  My scarf is one of my favorite Pashminas that I have had for at least 3 years now and I’m wearing a pair of black suede boots.  My gosh, my hair sure does stand out, doesn’t it?

Our 2015 Holiday and Winter Family Photos

I absolutely love taking our photos each year, but I think for next year, I may enlist the help of a fellow blogger or friend/family member to help take the images so that we are not putting in so much work lol. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas Holiday and from our family to yours, we wish you a prosperous and blessed New Year.

Each year in the Fall, my family and I have journeyed up to the local Pumpkin Patch at the Kula Country Farms to choose out the perfect pumpkin for carving.  This year was no exception and the family enjoyed their time there as we always do so we wanted to share with you the fun and excitement.  The Kula Country Farms located on the slopes of beautiful Haleakala on the island of Maui turns it’s grounds into a fun Pumpkin Patch and Fall Extravaganza with corn mazes, garden games and fun for the entire family.  For the last 4 years my family and I have ventured on over to the patch to spend a few hours enjoying the animals, buying fresh Maui grown produce and of course – picking our own pumpkins.  Today I share with you one of our Family Adventures.

Let’s face it – living on Maui has its perks and benefits because frankly, we are living in Paradise.  But, it can often mean that we are left without the resources that other towns can offer.  So when the Kula Country Farms started the annual pumpkin patch a few years back, my family and I have taken part in it each year.  There have been many changes and improvements to the patch this year, including a new parking lots that allows for easier parking for families so that they are not limited to parking on a very busy street.

Annual Trip To The Pumpkin Patch - Kahoohanohano Family Adventures

The pumpkin selections are far and wide in between, giving you the choice to choose a really large pumpkin or something small for coloring and painting.  Prices of the pumpkins range from $5 – $20 depending on the size and my family tends to pick up a pumpkin for each of us to carve or decorate as we see fit.  The location is HUGE – offering a wide variety of activities for your family from picking your own pumpkin to taking part in the corn maze and everything in between.  The boys look forward to swinging on the tire swings (while you can see this up year round) and taking part in any fun age appropriate activities for kids.

Annual Trip To The Pumpkin Patch - K Family Adventures

The boys absolutely love seeing the chickens that roam the grounds freely and the ponies / miniature horses that they can pet and feed.  There is also a huge bunny that has been there for years for the children to befriend.  This year we decided that we would take the time to not only choose our perfect pumpkin, but also spend some time checking out the vendors that were stationed up at the farm.  There was a kettle corn vendor that made the kettle corn fresh while we were there (you could smell the chocolate through out the farm) and different food vendors that sold plate lunches and snacks through out.

Annual Trip To The Pumpkin Patch - Kahoohanohano Family Adventures

The farm was pretty busy on the Saturday we chose to visit.  Cars were parked up and down the street and since I now have a small car, we were able to find a parking spot along the road side.  There were children everywhere, examining all of the fun activities and my boys absolutely enjoyed their time there.  If you are planning to visit the farm in time for Halloween pumpkin carving, I suggest going early in the month of October.  With the weather here in Hawaii being pretty warm, some of the pumpkins were already starting to rot (such a bummer) and last minute pumpkin pickers are scrambling for the perfect find.  We visited at the beginning of October and found that there was a huge selection of pumpkins to choose from, with many different sizes and types.

Annual Trip To The Pumpkin Patch - K Family Adventures

My husband picked me up the perfect pumpkin for carving and Kevin Ka’eo chose his pumpkin for his first year of carving on his own.  The twins each chose little pumpkins that they decided they would later paint.  We all hiked the pumpkins up the hill to pay for them and finish off our family adventure for the day.  The pumpkin fields can be dirty and dusty and sometimes icky but seriously, the look on these boys faces each year as they find the choice pumpkin for the holiday are priceless.

Annual Trip To The Pumpkin Patch - K Family Adventures

Some of the flowers were in bloom at the farm as well, which was an incredible site.  If you know anything about me… then you know that sunflowers are some of my favorite flowers and I look forward to seeing them.  They scream Fall to me which is one of my favorite seasons.

Annual Trip To The Pumpkin Patch - K Family Adventures

Since my husband has a pretty crazy work schedule sometimes and we are constantly busy, we are always looking for opportunities for family time.  With the holidays right around the bend, our daily lives can keep us on our toes so having a fun day like we did definitely helps us to make memories that will last a lifetime.  Our annual visit to the Kula Country Farms Pumpkin Patch is the beginning of our Holiday Family moments and reminds me that family – no matter how big or small, is something to cherish.

What are some of your Fall family traditions? Do you visit a pumpkin patch with your family to pick the perfect pumpkin?  Happy Fall!

Happy Foodie Friday!  It’s been a while since I have shared with you an food favorites so I figured why not celebrate Aloha Friday with some yummy treats that my family and I have been loving.  Let’s face it, while on a diet or even looking for a little sweet treat, popcorn can be such a great selection to help on those days and nights when you need a little something.  For a while now I have been seeing people rave about Angie’s BOOMCHICKAPOP® but I hadn’t seen them in any of my local stores until recently.  As soon as I caught a glimpse of them at my local Target on an end cap of the cash register aisle, I knew I had to have them.  So are they really that good?

Foodie Friday - Sweet Snacks From Angie's Boom Chicka Pop.

Let’s face it – I love food and snacks that are sweet and satisfying will get me every single time.  The BOOMCHICKAPOP® story is really awesome and one of the reasons I completely clicked with the brand and the product.  The product began in Minnesota in a garage by Dan and Angie Bastian.  This awesome team turned their amazing kettle corn recipe in their BOOMing business when they wanted to do something fun with their kids.  After selling at local events, the popcorn quickly became a hit and the rest is history.

Foodie Friday - Sweet Snacks From Angie's Boom Chicka Pop.

This certified gluten-free and use of non-GMO ingredients in their products make it a hit for moms like myself.  They offer you a great snack with simple ingredients, calorie transparency and yummy delicious tastes.  After one bite, I was hooked and so was the rest of my family.  You can select from a variety of different flavors, from sweet and salty and Cholesterol-Free goodies for yourself and your kids.  While not all are Vegan, many selections are and include whole grains and “always real” ingredients that make these a great snack.

Foodie Friday - Sweet Snacks From Angie's Boom Chicka Pop.

Do you have a love of food and snacks?  I think you may find yourself addicted to these after trying just one piece.  We have tried four or five different flavors and while the boys love the sweet and salty kettle corn, my favorite  is the tropical mix with coconut and pineapple – it’s delicious.  The only con about these that I think they taste so good, a large bag will be empty before you know it and then you’re left with nothing, so make sure you buy more than one bag.

Foodie Friday - Sweet Snacks From Angie's Boom Chicka Pop.

You can find Angie’s  BOOMCHICKAPOP® at many retailers including Target, Costco and your local grocery store.  They range in price from $3 – $5.00 a bag depending on the size and flavor you select.  BOOMCHICKAPOP is available in eight different flavors, BOOMCHICKABITES available in three flavors and BOOMCHICKAPUFFS available in three flavors.  These little treats have a great crunch versus what you can find on the market shelves and they never last long enough to store, so eating it by the expiration date is easy peasy.

Most importantly – These are mommy, daddy APPROVED.  Kevin, Luke & Isaiah approved too!  I think your family may enjoy them too and if not, stash a bag for yourself and eat it all on your own 😉

These little goodies make great after school snacks for my sons and we love taking a bag or two with us to my son’s football games on the weekend.  Have you tried any of the Angie BOOMCHICKAPOP goodies?  If so, which one is your favorite?  If not – what one do you have your eyes set on?

With our World ever changing and the seasons flying past us with a blink of an eye, it seems like we can never be too prepared for what comes ahead.  My husband and I have our fair share and then some of aches and ailments and I’m always worried that when the time comes should we need to take time off of work due to surgery or injuries, that we are never fully prepared for such an event.  My husband suffers from an injury to his spinal chord and there is a possibility that he may need a spinal fusion sometime in the future.  Along with an injury he has to his wrist, we are always looking at the challenges we’ll have to face with and without short term disability insurance and how it could benefit us in the long run.  Between the much needed protection that we will need for ourselves and our family, there are so many reasons why we look at outside insurance for assistance.  One important reason for us is not only protection, but also so that we have a little something that can help us – especially since we have our three littles.

Falling In Fall - Be Protected With Aflac Short Term Disability

Short Term Disability Insurance can benefit anyone and let’s face it, there are those “rainy days” we can’t avoid and accidents we have no control over.  While the insurance through our employers may be beneficial for our needs, there can always be situations we have no control over where an outside insurance will help us out.  Today I’m going to share with you a little about Aflac’s Short Term Disability Insurance and their Fall 2015 Open Enrollment.

Aflac Logo

For most U.S. companies, fall marks open enrollment season, a time when workers can review their employer-sponsored benefits offerings and choose the health insurance policies that best meet their financial and health care needs.   Selecting the right health care benefits may be one of the most important decisions Americans will make all year (for my family it surely is) and an Aflac survey found that many workers do very little research to learn which plans and products really work best for them.  In fact, 34 percent of employees spent 15 minutes or less researching their benefit options in 2014.  Those who don’t set aside time to research their insurance options often end up with inadequate health care protection for themselves and their families.

Let’s face it, you have absolutely no idea when you’ll need insurance to fall back on or rely on.  There may be a time when you’ll need to take care of yourself or a loved one – especially if you have a family and you may need the extra help.  It’s a smart decision to have insurance there to help you during a time when you need it most.  When an unforeseen medial event occurs, many people are often faced with paying copayments, deductibles or treatment costs not covered by major medical insurance, as well as other daily living expenses – all while paying increasing health insurance premiums.  According to a recent Aflac survey, 66 percent of workers would not be able to adjust to the large financial costs associated with a serious injury or illness, and 49 percent have less than $1,000 on hand to pay out-of-pocket medical expenses.  Voluntary policies, which complement major medical coverage, are specifically designed to help pay for out-of-pocket expenses that can be associated with an unexpected illness or injury.  In addition, the cash benefits can be used to help pay rent, gas, groceries, child care or any other out-of-pocket expenses that continue to roll in even if someone is too sick or injured to work.

Many people mistakenly believe that the Social Security Administration will provide adequate financial assistance if they become disabled, but that’s not true in all cases.  In fact, more than 59 percent of disability claims are denied by the Social Security Administration.

  • In addition, workers’ compensation only covers on-the-job injuries and disabilities, and considering that off-the-job injuries are three times more common than on-the-job injuries, having disability insurance can help you avoid devastating financial situations resulting from an unexpected accident that may leave you unable to work.1
  • Short-Term Disability insurance pays a percentage of your income if you are unable to work due to a covered illness or injury. Benefits are paid directly to you, unless otherwise assigned, to help cover things like deductibles, car payments, utility bills and more.
  • Those who should consider this product –
    1. Parents with young children and/or other dependents.
    2. Those who agree they should take better care of their health (feel stressed or need more sleep and a better diet).

Falling In Fall - Be Protected With Aflac Short Term Disability

While selecting the right insurance can be intimidating, it’s best to be prepared.  Aflac offers a variety of different insurance options for you like Accident, Cancer, Hospital and Life Insurance.  Aflac also offers short term disability and you have options that are available to help relieve some of the stress from those unexpected life changes and events that may occur.  With a growing family and my husband in a law enforcement field, there are so many things that can occur that can change our lives in a heartbeat.  You can never be too prepared and helping relieve some of that worry could be beneficial for you and your family.   Take a look at Aflac’s Fall 2015 Open Enrollment and see if there is something that could be beneficial for you.

As most know who spend some time here on my blog, my family and I enjoy cooking together and creating delicious grinds to satisfy our taste cravings.  But, did you know we also love to grill and enjoy the taste of a flame cooked meal?  During the summer months my husband will cook dinner on the grill at least once a week and we love the taste of flavor of the delectables we get to feast on.  However, keeping up with your grill and keeping it clean for the next use is not that easy so we are always on the hunt for tools that make this task uneventful.  Today I share with you Alpha Grillers Grill Brush.

Summer Barbecue with Alpha Grillers Grill Brush

If you have ever had to purchase grill tools, you know that they can be a bit expensive.  The Alpha Grillers Grill Brush retails for $29.99 (currently on sale for $8) and that’s a reasonably good price considering the size of the brush and quality.  This is a heavy duty BBQ Tool.  Stiff, thick stainless steel bristles combined with a long rigid handle makes cleaning your grill easy.  No one likes to get burned and I like that the reach on this tool due to the long handle makes cleaning easy.  What is great is that this product is made for all grill types – porcelain, stainless steel, cast iron, infrared, ceramic, electric, gas, charcoal, Char Broil, Big Green Egg or Weber Genesis.  You can scrub away the grit from grilling safely without marking or dinging your grates.

Before cleaning the grates
Before cleaning the grates

The handle is 18 inches which makes it the perfect length so that you don’t get burnt, but it is not too heavy in that you lose control over the brush.  You can still retain good leverage which makes it easy to use for those like me who have weak wrists or carpal tunnel.  The brush itself is not heavy at all so cleaning my grill really is simple to do.  What I enjoy the most about this brush is that you can scrub at any angle.  Since the bristles have a spiral design, you can hold the brush at any angle and get the job done.

After cleaning the grates with Alpha Grillers gril brush
After cleaning the grates with Alpha Grillers gril brush

If I had to discuss one con to the product – I do notice that the bristles do bend, so after several uses, the bristles did not keep the form that they had originally.  It did not hinder my use of the product thereafter and I’m still able to use the brush – but I did want to make that notation.  We clean our grill prior to our next barbecue, which is convenient for myself and my husband.  We heat up the grill and clean just before throwing our goods on the grates.  If you enjoy cleaning up after grilling – this will work as well.

Overall we enjoy the grill brush and I would suggest it to anyone looking for something affordable but made of good quality.  You can check out this brush and other products from Alpha Grillers here.

When it comes to my teeth (or the hubs or boys), I am constantly trying to stay on top of my game in cleaning and maintenance.  As a child, I always remembered my Dentist talking about how important it was to stay on top of those chompers and it stuck with me.  Between bi-yearly dentist visits for the family and good cleaning and flossing habits, I think we do pretty well.  I’m always intrigued with new gadgets on the market today that offer great results and recently I was given the opportunity to try the ISSA by Foreo toothbrush.  It’s been over a month since I started using this toothbrush and I wanted to share my thoughts with all of you.

Is The ISSA By Foreo Toothbrush a Must-Have? #issabyforeo #ifabbomember

The ISSA by Foreo is a new type of toothbrush that uses silicone bristles with pulsation technology for both cleaning and gum massage.  Similar to their face cleaning tool – the LUNA, I was intrigued by the concept and couldn’t wait to test it out.  The ISSA is ultra-hygienic with a nonporous silicone brush that is gentler and more hygienic than a standard nylon toothbrush which can be abrasive on the gums and harbor bacteria.  And, unlike other electronic toothbrushes on the market – you need only change out your brush head once a year and charge every 6 months or so.

The ISSA is available in four very cool and awesome colors and retails for $199 and there is also a mini version that can be used for kids which retails for $119.  Each replacement brush head is $24.90 – but as I mentioned before, you need only replace your brush head once a year.  You can find all of these and the descriptions at Foreo.com.

Is The ISSA By Foreo Toothbrush a Must-Have? #issabyforeo #ifabbomember

So how did the ISSA work for me?  Well, I naturally gravitate to the more soft bristle brush because I have sensitive gums and teeth.  But, I’m one of those people that will brush my teeth like a mad woman until they feel extra clean and squeaky.  With that said, I think the concept of the ISSA is interesting and works well and while I have been enjoying this product particularly for massaging my sensitive gums, when it comes to cleaning my teeth, I feel like I could use a little extra something.  Since I switch back and forth between a manual and electric toothbrush for my teeth care, I found that the ISSA did not get into the tighter areas that my teeth have to get them clean.  However, with all of that said, I still think my gums truly love this product.  It offers a pulsating but gentle massage on my gums that I really don’t get with a regular toothbrush and after visiting my dentist two weeks ago, she agreed that my gums were looking happy.

The bristles are a little longer than what I am used to – so I felt like there was not enough pressure on my actual teeth to get the clean I had desired, but nonetheless, this product has still made a difference in my gums, so I have been enjoying it and use it in combination with other products as a part of my teeth cleaning routine.  After trying this product now for over a month, I can say that while it cannot be a stand-alone tooth brush for me, I will still enjoy using it for my gum massage and while it does get my teeth clean, I just need a little more firmness to get that squeaky clean I love.

If you can afford the price point of this product and have sensitive teeth or gums – you may enjoy this toothbrush because it is very gentle on my teeth.  However, if you are someone that loves a good scrub a dub and wants their tooth brush to get into every crevice and cavity – you may want to stick with a traditional toothbrush.  Nonetheless, I’m glad I had a chance to try the ISSA by Foreo because my gums seriously love me now.

I have always been known to have the travel bug!  From the young age of 7, my little sister and I hopped on the plane by ourselves each vacation break to visit our grandmother on another island and till this day, traveling has been something I loved to do.  I have been to all the major Hawaiian Islands and have traveled across the United States from the West to the East Coast, visiting landmarks and attractions I had only dreamed of as a child.  Now that I’m married and have a family of my own, I believe that any journey a person takes in life are moments to cherish and that is why family fun during the summer is so important to me.

A Fun Family Summer to Discover with Discover It Miles

Now that my children are much older, traveling abroad or getting on a plane is not as feasible as it once was.  Paying for five seats on a plane instead of three (now the the twins are pass the two year old mark) is a hefty cost, so we haven’t traveled off island as a family in a few years and stay-cations have been musts for family fun.  Since we live in Hawaii, paradise is our backyard and the beach our playground, so while we won’t be boarding a plane this summer, I’m sure we’ll find a cute hotel or camp grounds that we can stay and make the best of a great island and destination.  Have you seen the price of airfare lately?  Flying from Hawaii to anywhere (even an island over) is a huge cost and the more children you have, the more you pay so together as a family we plan our special stay-cations that include fun family activities.

A Fun Family Summer to Discover with Discover It Miles

Our last “out of state” trip we took was to Washington D.C. a few years ago.  It was probably a favorite because my husband made sure to take us to places I had only dreamed of seeing when I was a child.  We were there for a special Medal of Honor Ceremony where we got to meet President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, but besides that very cool highlight – the trip in general opened my eyes to a very different world from what I was used to living with the island life here on Maui.  While that was 3 years ago, that trip alone cost my husband and I $10,000 to take our family of 5.  It was one I will never forget and neither will our pocket books.

While my family and I have a long list of places we would like to visit, our wallets definitely do not want to take a huge hit all at once again.  However, Discover can definitely help us for our next adventure.  Discover it Miles® can help with the cost of airfare (which is our biggest expense when traveling for our family of 5).  With no annual fee and a $0 fraud liability guarantee, Discover offers you protection so you are never responsible for unauthorized purchases on your card.  Also, you earn 1.5x the miles for every dollar spent on purchases and those miles never expire.  As an introductory offer, Discover it Miles card members will now receive double the amount of miles they’ve earned at the end of their first year – with no spending cap.  Before you know it, you have earned the mileage you need to put towards your future travel plans.  There are a lot of benefits for using the Discover it Miles Card, so be sure to head on over to the Discover site and check it out for yourself.

A Fun Family Summer to Discover with Discover It Miles

Reward cards like Discover’s are really great for paying small bills or groceries with and then earning the mileage for your next travel plans.  You can easily earn your miles by spending the small amounts on your card, like Gas for example – and then pay it off each month.  It’s an easy way to build your rewards and prep for your next vacation.  While my family and I will be enjoying another fun stay-cation this year, I am excited to earn some mileage for our next one we have planned and we can use our Discover it Miles card for our on-island resort stays and have a little fun while still building up the rewards we need for next year.  Family Fun – here we come!

I’m a little behind in posting this but it has been a crazy week and I haven’t been feeling well.  However, since it is Friday (Happy Aloha Friday), I figured I could share a little Foodie love and Fashion.  This past Sunday was Mother’s Day and my husband and sons surprised me with an awesome Brunch at the Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort.  This location is one of my favorites because the grounds are gorgeous and the Spa and Terme are one of my favorites to go a few times a year for a little “me” time.  This was the first time we attended their brunch and I’m so glad we had the opportunity to experience it.

The Grand Wailea Resort and Spa is located on the South Side of Maui in Wailea.  It is a gorgeous resort with grounds that are not only breathe-taking, but a playground for all ages.  It is also located on one of the most beautiful beaches Maui has to offer.

My family and I have been to the resort on many occasions whether as a stay-cation, attend weddings at their chapel, dine or play in the pools or spa but we have never been to their brunch.  This brunch occurs every Sunday, but this year they tried something different and had a Sangria bar especially for Mother’s Day.  Their buffet includes everything from Prime Rib and Crab legs to a plethora of seafoods, local dairy cheeses, waffles and pancakes and so much more.  I apologize for not having any photos of the food as I was too caught up in making my plate I completely forgot.

I was able to capture the dessert bar which was just as delicious and included everything from macarons to cake pops and everything in between.  Scrumptious treats for a great day.

The Grand Wailea is known for their many pools and this is one of them.  You can’t swim in this pool of course, but it’s a gorgeous landscape feature that is quite popular for photos.  We just couldn’t resist.

Love my guys!  My husband, sons and I do everything together – even anniversaries are celebrated together.  We are just a close family overall.  It was such a nice treat to have a Mother’s Day brunch with the ones I love.

The boys are all dressed casually wearing denim shorts from Old Navy and their favorite graphic t-shirts or plain t’s.  My husband is sporting a pair of Khaki Cargo Shorts from Dickies and a shirt from Maui Tropix.

My makeup for the day was quite simple.  It included some mascara (Benefit Roller Lash) and a quick wash of shimmer over the lid, I used the Colour Pop eye shadow in XO (from the Shaaanxo Collection).  On my lips I used just lip balm since I knew I would be stuffing my face with food… lol.

Each mother received an orchid flower (or as we call them in Hawai’i – pua) to put in our hair.

For dinner that evening my husband prepared for me his Pork Loin, smothered in mushrooms and homemade mushroom gravy with a side of garlic asparagus.  It is one of my favorites and I had been craving it for a few weeks so he picked up the supplies to make it for me.  MMM MMM YUM!

It was such a wonderful day and I wish that every Mother out there had a day that they not only enjoyed but also cherished.  I am a proud mom and so thankful for my children.  My pregnancies were all difficult and my children are definitely God’s gifts to us.

A few weeks ago my sons and I went out to a dinner date with a family member visiting from afar.  As we sat at the table, my Aunt asked… “Hmm… do your children not have those iApple things?”  I giggled, but explained to her that while they each have their own tablets they are limited on time of use, where they use them and how often.  As much as we love technology in our household, family time and hands on things are much more important and I’m glad my husband and I are able to instill that in our children.  After dinner, I thought back to some memories from years ago.  As a child my parents always made science things so interesting and I remember going on little adventures at the local park with my dad with a magnifying glass and clear dishes to hold our specimens in after finding them.  As we got older and my parents could afford it, my siblings and I would get really cool kits that allowed us to dig up dinosaur-like bones, bugs and mineral rocks and we enjoyed those as well.

Real Bug Dig Kit

Because of these memories it always excites me to be able to offer these similar things to my children.  My sons and I spend a lot of time together and because of this, much of what we do is explore and learn about History, Science and all the wonders our beautiful Earth has to offer.  But, with the rainy season upon us – our explorations have been dwindled quite a bit.  That’s why I am so excited that there are cool Kits like the one I’m about to talk to you about.  Discover With Dr. Cool Real Insect Excavation Kit has been a fun choice for rainy days and I am excited to place another order for other kits also available.

Real Bug Dig Kit

The Discover With Dr. Cool’s Kit retails for about $12 on their website and comes with everything you need to dig up some really cool bugs.  Included in the kit is your Digging Block (which is disguised as a bright green beetle), Excavation Tools, and Adventure Guide, an Activity Booklet and 3 Real Specimens.  Please note that some of the items in the kit are considered choking hazards and not recommended for children under 3.

Real Bug Dig Kit

The kit is completely hands-on and my three boys each took turns scraping away at the beetle till they revealed what was encased inside.  Just like archaeologists, they took their time to clean away the dust and debris till they found what they were on the search for.  I was a bit worried that with their little excavation they may mutilate the specimens while looking but each one is secure in a glass shell.

Real Bug Dig Kit

The boys took about an hour to get through the entire beetle to reveal their finds.  Though I know they thoroughly enjoyed it and they took their time because this was truly an adventure to discover.  My ten year old (Kevin) loved taking part in this with his little bros (Luke & Isaiah) who are just five years old and together they made this an afternoon of fun and discovery.

After making their way to through the exterior of the beetle, they slowly started to find the glass encased bugs through out the body of the beetle.  What I enjoyed about this kit is there were no sharp edges to any of the digging tools.  It was as simple as laying down some newspaper and clean up was just as easy as throwing it all away.

Real Bug Dig Kit

The boys didn’t have to dig too deep as most of the bug specimens were found through out the top part of the beetle.  I do suggest that if you have asthma or if you have sensitivity to dust to use a mask as it seemed like this was a clay like brick and there was quite a bit of dust.  We made sure to open our windows so the boys air and breathing was not compromised.

What I think is probably the coolest part is the end result.  Each bug is encased in a cool glass marble and they are REAL Genuine bugs.  The kit includes a guide with information on each bug included in the kit and it was so cool to see the different colors these bugs had on their bodies.  The activity booklets also include challenge puzzles and games that the boys enjoyed taking part in.

Real Bug Dig Kit

The boys and I are excited to try out other kits available all for about the same price range.  With technology taking our World by storm, sometimes we forget all about the wonders that our Earth offers.  While the internet opens up our eyes to things we can’t see or touch immediately, I’m so glad that there are still great things like this to keep our children wondering about science and more.
