What is Kuleana Beauty?

Kuleana is a clean, simple skincare system that features moisturizing Hawaiian beauty oils and facial cleansers made with natural ingredients grown and handcrafted right in Hawaii by pioneering renewable energy company, Pacific Biodiesel.  (Pacific Biodiesel is also the company behind the Maui Sunflower Farm that you see in my picture below)

About Kuleana

Kuleana beauty products are manufactured by Maiden Hawaii Naturals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pacific Biodiesel Technologies.  Founded in 1995 on Maui, Pacific Biodiesel is Hawaii’s only commercial producer of liquid bio fuels.  It demonstrates a sustainable, community-based, zero-waste “agriculture and renewable energy” model that is helping Hawaii fight climate change and achieve a clean energy future.

This photograph was taken in April 2017.

I had the opportunity to try two products from the Kuleana Beauty line Soothe and I’m going to share my thoughts on each product for all of you.

Soothe Beauty Cleanser

The cleanser is gentle on the skin and made with macadamia nut oil, Hawaiian sea salt and Hawaiian rainwater that is collected and purified from the rainy Hilo area of Hawaii island.  The cleanser rinses very easily from the skin without tugging or rubbing but leaves my skin feeling clean and renewed.  If you’re looking for a cleanser that has a lot of lather, this one may not be it… but it doesn’t leave me feeling dirty after a cleansing.  My skin feels clean (without the dryness), fresh and I love that the cleanser is lightweight but still offers so much moisture for my dry skin.

Ingredients:  Aqua (filtered rainwater) Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, Potassium Hydroxide*, Sodium Chloride (Hawaiian Sea Salt).
* used only to saponify oils into soap. None remains in final product.

Soothe Beauty Oil

Made with pure Hawaiian macadamia nut oil, which is a light oil that absorbs rapidly to nourish the skin. This oil is perfect to moisturize all skin types. The Beauty Oil is also a favorite of mine because I can use it day or night as a light moisturizer or to really hydrate my skin if needed. It hasn’t clogged my pores or caused my sensitive skin any issues.

Ingredients:  Macadamia nut oil

I’ve been using each of these products quite religiously as a part of my daily skincare routine over the last 2 months or so.  My skin looks radiant after using both of these products and I love how soft and smooth my face feels each day.  Whether I use both products together or separately, I know that my skin will look radiant and glowing but also plump and youthful.  I’m definitely a fan of these products and I just love how my skin drinks each of them up and looks and feels so hydrated.

Coming soon to Kuleana

Coming soon, Kuleana will also be releasing a reef-safe sunscreen, that includes their natural plant-based oils and is free of oxybenzon and octinoxate, both of which are soon-to-be-banned in Hawaii as of Jan. 1, 2021 (common sunscreen ingredients that are now known to cause damage to our reefs.)  You can pre-order your sunscreen now as shipments will begin in September 2018.

I’m proud to say that Kuleana Products are a part of Hawaii and as a Hawaiian Native, I love the mission behind the brand.  It’s import to remember that our Earth is simply on loan and we need to take care of it while it’s in our possession.

In Hawaiian, “kuleana” means a personal sense of responsibility.

Pono – To Make Right!

If you’ve been reading my posts here on Honeygirl’s World for a while, you may know that I review and test out many skin care products.  But, Kuleana has a special place in my heart.  The “Kuleana” or responsibility of our Hawaiian people is to perpetuate our Hawaiian culture, language and land.  Kuleana Beauty takes that value and uses it to inspire their company to not only practice sustainability and support local farming but also to help create a cleaner, kinder and healthier world for all of us.  In Hawaiian, we would call that “Pono”, which is defined as:  righteousness or to make right.

Please be sure to head on over to the Kuleana website to get the full mission and background on how this company came about.  I’m sure you will enjoy their story and love what they stand for as much as I do.

Mahalo (thank you) Kuleana Beauty for giving me the opportunity to try your products.  You have a life long customer and fan and I look forward to trying all of the other skincare products you offer as well as sharing your brand and products with everyone I know.

Skincare is such an individual thing for most people.  What might work for some, may not work for others and sometimes products that are expensive or affordable may offer different results for each person.  I have tried so many different skincare products over the years, that I kind of know what may be a dud for me the first few times I use it and what may turn into my holy grail of products.  Today I’m going to be sharing with all of you my thoughts on a few products I have tried from PCA Skin.  Prior to being contacted by this company, I really didn’t know much about them.  But, I’m finally able to share my thoughts with you on products I tried from my specific treatment plan.

PCA Skincare, PCA Skin, skincare, skin care, beauty, product review, acne treatment, acne, anti-aging, retinol, beauty review, skin care beauty, eczema, acne cleanser, dry skin, skincare for dry skin, normal combination skin,

Let me start off by saying that this post is very long overdue.  I have been using these products for quite a few months now but as a beauty blogger, I get so many skin care products to test, that it can take me a while to see what works and how it works in combination with favorites I already have in my beauty routine.  PCA Skin sent me 5 products to try that were specifically recommended for me since I have Eczema prone, dry skin.  I also wanted something that would help cleanse my skin since I had been struggling with acne over the last few months.  I’m going to discuss with you what products I got and how I used them all.

PCA Skincare, PCA Skin, skincare, skin care, beauty, product review, acne treatment, acne, anti-aging, retinol, beauty review, skin care beauty, eczema, acne cleanser, dry skin, skincare for dry skin, normal combination skin,

Let’s start with the treatment bars.  The Dry Skin Relief Bar (net wt 3.2 oz / 90 g – $40) was probably one of my favorite products that I had the chance to try out.  This bar is formulated to help soothe and improve dry skin concerns, including psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis.  The bar is formulated with 3% salicylic acid and antioxidants.  My skin really takes on a ton of damage during the winter months and that is usually when my Eczema likes to flare up.  I used this bar daily and loved that it had a light lather and left my skin feeling clean without stripping the moisture that my face needed to keep from drying out.  This bar can be used all over the body and even on the scalp which is perfect for dry scalp issues.  I also enjoyed the fact that it helped to calm the recurrence of itching, redness, flaking, and irritation I often get from dry skin during the winter months.

I think the packaging was a bit of a challenge to work with (even if it came with a sponge to use with it) and I would love to see this in an actual bar form so it would be easy to use, but overall, I enjoyed this product.

The Blemish Control Bar (net wt 3.2 oz / 90 g – $40) was also a favorite.  Honestly, I think the bars from PCA Skin are definitely worth checking out.  The Blemish Control Bar is a skin purifying and cleansing bar that is perfect for oily skin or those suffering/experiencing acne.  It is formulated to clear pores of oil and to soften the skin, while reducing existing acne breakouts.  It also prevents future acne breakouts with 2% salicylic acid.  With purifying ingredients like eucalyptus oil, this bar is definitely something for anyone experiencing unruly skin may enjoy.  I can’t use this bar daily, but find that it’s perfect for once a week for me and keeps my skin looking fresh while purging my skin of impurities that tend to make it’s way to the surface.  I haven’t had many breakouts since using this so I’m pretty stoked at how well it has been working for me.  If you have sensitive or dry skin, you may want to use a little of this at a time and don’t use daily.  I found that when I first started testing out the product, my skin became extremely dry for several days.  Once I figured out the best solution for using it, it has been great.

Again, like the other bar, I’d love to see the packaging switch up on these.

The Intensive Brightening Treatment was something I was a bit scared to use but I do enjoy a good retinol product.  This product is expensive considering the size of the tube (net wt 1 oz / 29.5 g – $109) and I honestly would be deterred by the price having not tried the brand before.  But, I’m so so glad that I had the opportunity to try this specific product because I immediately was hooked after the first try.  In just three days I noticed a huge difference in my skin.  The discoloration I had before had lightened so dramatically that my mom just had to get her hands on this product immediately.

This retinol night-time treatment is powerful and creates an even, bright and radiant complexion.  With pure retinol, resveratrol, and niacinamide to help promote a healthy glow while also improving discoloration, I loved the results.  The Intensive Brightening Treatment has potent, stable ingredients that are patented in an Omnisome delivery system to carry the ingredients deeper into the skin for superior results.  I have used many brightening creams in the past and I think this may be my favorite.  I’m super thankful that a little goes a long way with this thing because with that price point, I’ll be saving my coins for a while before I can replace it.  But, I have to say, it’s definitely something I’m going to repurchase.

This photo was taken today. I am not wearing any makeup and it was taken with my phone. There was no editing done to my complexion or my face, what you see is what you get.

Now, let’s talk Purifying Mask.  The PCA Purifying Mask (net wt 2.1 oz / 60 g – $58) is a mask that is developed and formulated for oily, normal and combination skin.  I was a bit worried because I have dry skin and I had hoped that it wouldn’t cause me any issues.  This purifying mask is an at-home clay-based treatment mask that exfoliates, detoxifies and removes impurities from the skin.  It leaves the skin feeling smooth and looking clear and bright.  It includes a well-balanced botanical blend of ingredients to promote clear complexion while also having the clay included to eliminate the build-up of impurities in the pores.  It gently exfoliates the build-up of surface debris, leaving your face with a smooth and clear canvas.

I have used this product the last few months and have enjoyed it, but I have to use it sparingly.  I can easily have a dry spell or dry spots on my face if I use too much of it or if I use it too often.  But, when I do use it, my skin feels so soft after and even radiant.  It is definitely a mask I enjoy, but I have to make sure I’m not overdoing it too much.  I love the way my skin feels once I remove it and how vibrant it looks, but it definitely does purify, so I have to be sure not to strip my natural moisture so much that my Eczema flares up.

Lastly is the Weightless Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 45 (net wt 2.1 oz / 60 g – $44).  I use SPF daily because I have such sensitive skin and I’m not getting any younger, so if I can help my skin out by protecting it, I’ll do it.  I have tried many different kinds over the years and I do have my favorites, so I wasn’t sure that I would enjoy this one, honestly.  This Broad Spectrum SPF 45 is quick absorbing, which is a huge deal for me since I’m always on the go.  It is lightweight and perfect to be worn under makeup.  It provides the skin with antioxidant protection and protects against UV rays.  I thought it was awesome that it was Awarded the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation as well.

I didn’t notice any white cast while using this SPF, which is always a plus for me.  And, my skin absorbed it well.  Here are a few of the ingredients in this SPF for those who are wondering:  Zinc Oxide, Octinoxate, Silybin, and Caffeine.

This SPF applies easily and again, it is so lightweight, I forget that I have it on.  I have been using this on my sons as well since I always have it on me and they forget they have sunscreen on at all.  I especially enjoy that it doesn’t make my skin feel oily or greasy and I don’t feel the need to overly reapply like other sunscreens on the market.  I’m not a huge fan of the fact that it has Octinoxate in the formulation, but so far, it’s working for me.

So, after months of trying out these products from PCA Skin, I finally have some information to share with all of you.  Overall, I do really enjoy the products I’ve tried so far.  There are a variety of pros and cons for each, but I’m just really thankful that it didn’t cause my skin to go to war with me.  PCA Skin was founded in 1990 and for over 25 years they have continued to provide great products for their customers and beauty professionals worldwide.

PCA Skin does not perform or condone animal testing at any point during their formulary process and all ingredients used have decades of research proving their safety on human skin.  I was quite excited to try these products and as I mentioned before, I do really like them.  I will be saving up some money to continue using these products as a part of my skin care regimen and I look forward to trying others the brand has to offer.

As I mentioned previously, you’ll be seeing a few reviews and my thoughts on different StriVectin products I’ve been using over the last few months.  The StriVectin Intensive Eye Concentrate for Wrinkles has been a product I have had in my possession for about 4 months now, maybe longer.  And, after using it this long – I’m finally able to share my thoughts with you on this particular product.

StriVectin, StriVectin Intensive Eye Concentrate for Wrinkles, eye cream, skin care, skincare, review, beauty product, beauty, eye care, wrinkles, anti-aging, intensive eye concentrate, anti-aging eyes, cream, eye serum, youthful,

The StriVectin Intensive Eye Concentrate for Wrinkles (30mL / 1 fl.oz.) retails for $69.00.  The claim of the brand is that you will see visible results in just one week and will notice the reduction of fine lines, crows feet, dark circles and puffiness.  I have been using this product over the last four months (or more) in combination with some of my favorite skin care products and have included it in my skincare regimen.  Let me start by saying that I’ve been so happy with how long this tube of product has lasted me.  Since I concentrate the product on the outer corner of my eyes (crows feet area) and on and around the orbital bone area, I have noticed that a little of the product goes a long way and my tube has lasted me a long time.  Used in the morning and evening as part of my skin care routine, I gently pat the product using my ring finger around the eye area.

The cream is light weight and cream-like in texture.  When applied I noticed instantly that the area around my eye seemed much more hydrated and bright.  While I don’t really have much wrinkles, I do have fine lines and I notice that they are not as prominent as they had been.  I don’t suffer from under-eye circles or puffiness, so I didn’t notice much of a difference there, but I do notice that my eye area looks much more bright then before and my eyes look awake.

I use a lot of different skin care products in combination with those that I test out and those that I purchase and love.  I have been enjoying this product because I love how awake and how moisturized my eye area looks and feels.  Since I have naturally dry skin, many times an eye cream doesn’t provide the hydration I need from it, but I did notice that this definitely provided great moisture to my eye area.  It doesn’t provide immediate tightening of the skin near my eyes so I don’t use it specifically for that reason… but do use it to hydrate the eye area since it works so well in doing so.  Not only does it provide intense hydration for my eyes, but it doesn’t leave my eye area greasy which is a huge plus.  Using makeup after applying this product is not a challenge as others have been for me in the past.

THE SCIENCE (as stated from StriVectin)

This lightweight moisturizing formula is proven to visibly reduce the look of all types of lines around the eyes, including crow’s feet, squint lines and deep-set wrinkles – starting in just one week. Next generation ocular skin technology powerfully addresses the appearance of under-eye dark circles and puffiness to illuminate and awaken. Patented NIA-114™ technology helps strengthen delicate eye area skin and diminish dehydration.
Optical diffusers reflect light to immediately brighten dark shadows and help alleviate visible signs of screen fatigue.

“After using the cream for about 3 months, I have noticed my crows feet are not as prominent and my eyes look more hydrated and supple.” – Honey

  • Visibly reduces the look of all types of lines in the eye area
  • Alleviates the appearance of under-eye circles and puffiness
  • Brightens and diminishes visible signs of screen fatigue

StriVectin, StriVectin Intensive Eye Concentrate for Wrinkles, eye cream, skin care, skincare, review, beauty product, beauty, eye care, wrinkles, anti-aging, intensive eye concentrate, anti-aging eyes, cream, eye serum, youthful,

This eye concentrate is a bit on the pricey side, but I think it really is a good price considered how long it has lasted me with daily use.  Of course, with anything I use – it may be a different situation with anyone else, so I may be using a lot less than someone else and therefore it may only last 30 days for someone who uses more.  Overall – it’s a product I do enjoy and have been using daily for the last several months.  Whether or not I’ll continue to purchase it like the StriVectin Multi-Action Restorative Cream, I’m not sure, but so far I’ve enjoyed this product and like what it has done for my eyes.

What about you?  Is this something you would be interested in trying and if so, what would you like this product to help reduce on your end?
