Regular health check-ups are key components of maintaining good health. Not only can these exams allow you to keep an eye on key stats like your blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels but they can also assist in early identification of any potential health concerns.

Here Is A Checklist Of 10 Essential Health Check-Ups That Should Be Performed On An Ongoing Basis:

1. Comprehensive Medical Checkup

A comprehensive medical checkup is an overall physical evaluation of your health that usually entails physical examination, blood and urine tests, and imaging studies such as X-rays or ultrasound scans. Your doctor will review your medical history, medications, and lifestyle habits to identify if changes need to be made for improved overall well-being; they may also conduct specific tests depending on individual risk factors.

2. Blood Pressure Check

High blood pressure (hypertension) is one of the leading preventable causes of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Regular blood pressure checks can help you keep your blood pressure under control, reduce cardiovascular risk factors and identify any underlying medical conditions that could be contributing to an elevated reading.

Ideally, it should be checked at least annually or more often if your readings have reached elevated levels. It is advised to have your blood pressure tested yearly or more often if already high readings exist.

3. Diabetes Screening

Diabetes is a chronic condition in which your body’s ability to produce and use insulin is diminished, increasing your risk for serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, vision loss, and organ damage. A diabetes screening (also called fasting plasma glucose test) measures how much sugar has entered your blood after you’ve gone 8 hours without eating anything (the fasting plasma glucose test). Adults should undergo this screening every three years or more often if at higher risk.

4. Cholesterol Test

Cholesterol is a waxy substance in your blood that increases your risk for heart disease and stroke. Regular cholesterol checks are recommended at least every five years for people without risk factors; those with high cholesterol levels or other risk factors may require more frequent tests.

5. Oral Health

Oral health is integral to overall wellness, so having regular oral health checkups with a dentist is crucial. He or she will evaluate your teeth and gums for signs of dental disease as well as any other issues, so this type of visit should occur at least annually to ensure you’re maintaining good dental habits.

6. Skin Cancer Screening

Skin cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer in America, so early detection is vital. At a skin cancer screening, your physician will carefully inspect any suspicious spots or growths on your skin to detect any early warning signs. Screening should be conducted annually if sun exposure or family history increases your risk factors for skin cancer.

Regular health checkups are essential in staying on top of your health and recognizing any emerging problems early. Talk with your physician about which exams would be appropriate based on your age, medical history, and risk factors to ensure you’re making strides toward living a healthier lifestyle.
