There’s something that’s been sitting heavy on my mind lately…

When did relationships become content for views?

Scrolling through social media, it’s almost impossible not to come across couples content, family vlogs, or “funny” relationship moments. And while some of it is lighthearted and genuine, a lot of it lately feels… off.

Not funny.
Not relatable.
Just uncomfortable.

The Shift in Couples Content

There was a time when sharing your relationship online felt authentic. It was about connection, documenting memories, and bringing people along for the journey.

Now?

It feels like some people are willing to trade respect for engagement.

We’re seeing:

  • Public embarrassment disguised as humor
  • Partners being ridiculed for views
  • Private moments turned into viral content
  • Real issues being exploited for clout

And the question becomes… at what cost?

When “Funny” Crosses the Line

Let’s be real — there’s a difference between joking with your partner and humiliating them for an audience.

When one person is unaware they’re being recorded…
When moments are shared without consent…
When content is created at the expense of someone’s dignity…

That’s not entertainment.

That’s disrespect.

Clout Should Never Cost You Your Relationship

Social media rewards attention.
But not all attention is worth having.

Going viral shouldn’t come at the cost of:

  • Your partner’s trust
  • Your children’s privacy
  • Your family’s dignity

Because once something is online… it lives forever.

And the impact?
That goes far beyond likes and views.

As a Wife & Content Creator… Here’s My Take

I’ve been creating content for nearly 20 years.

And I can say this with full confidence:

I will never build my platform at the expense of my marriage or my family.

My relationship is not content.
My family is not a strategy.

Some things are meant to be protected — not performed.

The Bigger Conversation

The reality is… this behavior is becoming normalized.

People are laughing.
Sharing.
Engaging.

And in doing so, they’re unintentionally rewarding content that crosses serious boundaries.

But here’s the thing:

You don’t have to “call someone out” to make a difference.

You can:

  • Stop watching
  • Stop engaging
  • Stop supporting

Because attention is the currency — and you control where it goes.

So Let Me Ask You…

Where do you draw the line?

Is it “just content”?
Or do you think some things should stay private?

Over the last two decades, the digital landscape has evolved dramatically. Social media has given rise to a new wave of creators, many labeled as “influencers.” But here’s the thing—I’ve been creating content long before the term “influencer” even existed, and I’ve never been comfortable being called one. In this post, I’ll share my thoughts on why I prefer to call myself a content creator, the key differences between influencers and creators, and the lessons I’ve learned after 20 years in the digital space.

The Evolution of Digital Creation

When I started creating content nearly 20 years ago, the landscape was completely different. Platforms like MySpace, Blogger, and even early YouTube were about connection, creativity, and authenticity. The term “influencer” wasn’t even a thing back then—it was all about sharing passions and building communities organically.

Fast forward to today, and the word “influencer” has become synonymous with brand deals, curated lifestyles, and chasing trends. While there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s not the path I’ve chosen.

Content Creator vs. Influencer

So, what’s the difference? For me, a content creator focuses on storytelling, education, and adding value to their audience’s lives. An influencer, on the other hand, often focuses on selling a lifestyle or product. While both roles are valid, I’ve always prioritized building genuine relationships with my audience and sharing content that reflects who I am.

Why I Don’t Like the Term “Influencer”

The label “influencer” feels limiting—it reduces the depth of what we do as creators. I’m not here to just sell products; I’m here to tell stories, inspire, and connect. Plus, the term comes with stereotypes of inauthenticity and superficiality, which doesn’t align with the values I hold as a creator.

Lessons From 20 Years of Content Creation

Here are some key lessons I’ve learned over the years:

  1. Authenticity Wins: Audiences connect with creators who are real, not perfect.
  2. Adaptability is Key: The digital world changes quickly, and being flexible has helped me stay relevant.
  3. Know Your Why: Creating content with purpose keeps you motivated and grounded.
  4. It’s Not All About Numbers: Impact matters more than follower counts.
  5. Consistency is Everything: Showing up regularly builds trust and credibility.

Closing Thoughts

As the digital space continues to evolve, I believe it’s important to redefine what it means to be a creator. Whether you call yourself an influencer, a digital entrepreneur, or something else entirely, the key is to stay authentic and create content that reflects your unique voice.

It’s been about 3 years since I have done an updated post for my Confessions of a Corrections Officer’s Wife Segment here on Honeygirl’s World. It’s not that I forgot, because God knows that I live this life each day. It’s more so that I sometimes hope that I can close my eyes and make it all go away. Sometimes writing it all down, well – it’s more of a challenge than I give it credit.

I did however, decide to record a podcast episode and I wanted to share it with all of you. Put on your headphones or turn up the volume and listen. I think that will make it a little easier than reading it, huh?
