There is just something about a scent or fragrance that can take me back years into time and remind me of how things used to be before cell phones and iPads. One of the products that evoke memories in me is Vicks VapoRub. The scent is uncanny and reminds me of the days of being a child when I was sick and suffering with my asthma. My parents and grandma used Vicks VapoRub as a way to help with those cold and cough ailments and it is something that my husband and I continue to use in our family till this day. My husband and I now take the traditions of our parents and incorporate them into what we do for our household and our children. When any of our boys has a cough or a cold, a little VapoRub goes a long way in helping to make everyone in the house feel better.
Vicks VapoRub is a cough suppressant that works well for the whole family. It is a topical cough medicine with medicated vapors so it’s perfect for my little ones as it provides soothing cough relief that starts working instantly. What I like is that it is not likely to cause drowsiness or any jittery side effects when used as directed and has been a must have in my household for many years. Intended for use on anyone 2+ years of age that is seeking cough relief, Vicks VapoRub is a topical cough medicine, applies easily and my children really enjoy the scent. It’s suitable for both adults and children and I have found it to be a great product for my own family as my parents have found it to be the same many years ago for me and my siblings.
VapoRub contains camphor, eucalyptus oil and menthol that helps to relieve the cough and the discomfort of minor aches and pains (as well as cough relief). VapoRub can be used in a variety of ways:
- On the chest and throat to help temporarily relieve cough due to minor throat and/or bronchial irritation associated with the common cold
- On muscles and joints VapoRub can temporarily relieve minor aches and pains of muscles and joints.
It doesn’t matter how old we are – we all have memories of how our parents cared and comforted us when we were sick. My mom still calls and checks up on me when I’m not well and my dad is sure to remind me to keep Vicks VapoRub on hand for the days when we are not well. I have read the label and it says VapoRub is effective when rubbed on your chest, throat and back. An old family trick is to put VapoRub on our feet and cover our feet with socks at night before bed. In the morning we feel much better and ready to take on our day. Whether it be that I was suffering from a head cold or had aches and pains that accompanied the flu, my parents knew exactly how to make us feel better. I take these little tips and tricks passed down generations and from my parents and incorporate them into my life with my family now. From a warm bowl of homemade chicken noodle soup or stew to a favorite cuddle blanket, I do what I can to make my children and family feel comfortable when not well. Vicks VapoRub is one of those things that is always at hand to aid in a good nights sleep and help when we are feeling ill.
Like I mentioned before, scents bring back a plethora of emotions and remind me of my childhood. Once I seen the blue container and opened the lid of the Vicks VapoRub, that familiar menthol scent that I remember so well reminded me that traditions and favorites are what helps to make great memories. I knew immediately that I would feel a soothing relief and that I would get a good night’s rest. It was like reliving my childhood all over again, memories that last a lifetime.

Growing up my mom would also make noodle soup, we ate oranges and saltine crackers and drank seven up when we were sick. In my teen years I’d swallow honey and wash hot tea down too for a sore throat. Vicks was a big help for us too. Magic when couldn’t breathe. My father I remember always pulled it out for us. I also use it now. 🙂 I haven’t tried on the feet with socks, that sounds cool.
ah… honey is a huge one in our house as well. It was so important to help with my asthma because I would cough a lot and it would soothe my throat. 🙂 I think it’s always great to have some old memories of things to help with ailments. Try the feet with socks… it helps especially when having a cold or coughing…helps the boys sleep through thenight.
My throat would swell so bad during those times, I learned it from an exchange student. 🙂 I liked it better than my aunts version of just mixing the tea and honey in a cup and drinking it. The honey felt like it coated my throat and then the tea following just felt more soothing. Yes 🙂 Will do try thank you! 😀
Wow, my parents used to use this on me, and it always felt so comforting!
Wow, blast from the past! I haven’t thought of Vaporub in years!
I haven’t used Vick’s in years but just thinking about it returns the scent memory. Every time I got a cold or the flu, there was my mom with her cobalt blue glass (yeah, I’m that old! lol) jar of Vapo Rub to rub me up, pop me in a flannel nightie and tuck me into bed. Hot chicken soup, 7-Up (in the old school green glass bottle, of course!) and apples to follow.
Okay, now I’m misty and I want my mom. 😀
We love Vicks! My kids always use it when they get colds.
I felt I could smell this reading your article. It does bring back memories.
I used to hate when my mom pulled this out (mainly because my pjs would stick to it) but you can’t beat if when you’re all stuffed up and feeling terrible.
Vicks used to be a staple during my childhood as well! They brought out cough drops and we preferred those to the VapoRub.
I love VapoRub! My husband says I have an addiction to it… haha 🙂
I myself am sick right now and this is such a staple. I have fond memories of VaporRub as a child. 🙂
When my son is sick, this is all I’ll use! It helps so much at night!
