Have you ever looked at a photograph from your past and felt a physical sting?
Why was I the only one who she frowned for?
For me, that photograph is from my wedding day. In the background of a day that was supposed to be filled with pure joy, a specific family ember stood frowning directly at the camera. What made it hurt even deeper was looking through the rest of my family album later on. In every single photo with my cousins and other family members, the same person was smiling brightly.
I was the one singled out. I was the one treated the worst.
Waiting for an apology that I knew would never come
When someone treats you like an outsider in our own family, it leaves a unique kind of scar. It’s quiet, exhausting type of betrayal. And for years, I carried the heavy weight of that resentment, waiting for an apology or at least an acknowledgement that I knew deep down was never going to come.
But here is the hard truth I had to learn:
Forgiveness isn’t about letting them off the hook. It’s about letting yourself out of the trap.
Holding onto anger doesn’t change how you’re treated
Holding onto anger doesn’t change how they treated you; it only poisons your present peace. Choosing to forgive when you have physical “proof” of their bitterness isn’t a sign of weakness – it’s the ultimate act of reclaiming your own power.
