As I sit here at my desk writing up this post, the sun is peaking through the clouds.  You see, we just experienced a heavy downpour due to a tropical storm in our midst, but even with the rain – it’s still quite hot and humid.  I honestly forgot to share this delicious recipe with all of you and decided I better hop on it and get it out before Fall approaches us and I completely forget altogether.  It’s been pretty warm lately here in Hawaii and while I do enjoy the summer months, I enjoy a great drink that just hits the spot to cool you down in a heartbeat.  Today I’ll be sharing with you a couple of easy to do recipes that are for drinks that are refreshing and light – perfect for the last of the summer months.  These drinks feature Cascade Ice and a few ingredients but they will be an absolute hit at your backyard BBQ or potluck or just to enjoy while sitting on the veranda enjoying the warm summer and what’s left of it.

Let’s start with the Coco-Lemonade:

Let’s face it, a BBQ isn’t complete without some good ol’ fashion lemonade and it’s probably one of my favorite summer drinks.  This Coco-Lemonade is great and offers a fun little twist.  Start with a chilled glass full of ice and add 3 oz. of Cascade Ice Coconut and 4 oz. of Cascade Ice Lemonade.  Garnish with sliced lemons and a sugar rim for that sweet and tart taste and a little glam.  This is the perfect drink for the little ones because it’s refreshing and who doesn’t love a great lemonade.  Looking to spice it up a bit?  Add a shot of coconut rum to give it that pina collada twist with some lemon flare.  Garnish with coconut sugar and you have yourself a delicious drink.

Cascade Ice offers a variety of delicious drinks for any BBQ or Summer Party (as well as year round).  Blueberry Watermelon, Strawberry Lemonade, Coconut, Lemonade and Pomegranate Berry are all delicious and refreshing all on their own.  You can experience guilt-free taste without the sodium, caffeine and gluten and enjoy the taste that’s absolutely great.  Cascade Ice offers 30 great tasting varieties.  Cascade Ice water is a flavored sparkling water with a clean crisp, delicious taste.  Cascade Ice water eliminates the unnecessary, unhealthy “extras” you can find in other flavor waters like sugar, sodium, carbs, caffeine and gluten and gives you pure, refreshing taste that you’ll love.

Not into coconut or lemon?  Don’t you worry – I got you covered with a few more recipes you can try.  For my melon lovers, try the Melon Mixer.  That delicious watermelon we see in stores can be used in a wonderful and refreshing, thirst quenching drink.  Start with 3 oz. of Cascade Ice Blueberry Watermelon (yum).  Pour in 1 oz. of club soda and add several slices of watermelon and blueberries to the mix.  Stir to release the fresh flavor and you’ll have a drink fit for the Gods.  Add a little vodka for an adult version of this drink and you are good to go.

Love Pomegranate?  Well, try the Pomegranate Icer.  Since Pomegranates pack a punch of vitamins and anti-oxidants and they are in season for summer, this is the perfect time to try this drink.  Start with 4 oz. of Cascade Ice Pomegranate Berry and 1 oz of Cascade Ice Strawberry Lemonade in a glass with crushed ice.  Top it off with fresh pomegranate seeds for the perfect touch.  You can turn this drink into a cocktail version by adding a shot glass or two of vodka and garnish with pomegranate seeds.

Do you follow me on Snapchat?  If so, you may have seen my short little demo of my version of the Starbucks Pink Drink and how I created my own.  It’s really easy (I have a download of the DIY from my snaps embedded below) and most of the time you can either find all the ingredients you need in your refrigerator or freezer or they are cheap to pick up from your local grocer.  Today I’m going to share with you the recipe and a little chit chat too.  So – keep reading to learn how to make your own DIY Starbuck’s Pink Drink – the drink that’s so popular on Social Media that many Starbucks shops are having a hard time keeping them in stock.

DIY, starbucks, do it yourself, starbucks pink drink, diy pink drink, diy starbucks pink drink, food, drink, delicious, recipe,

So what is the Starbucks Pink Drink and what does it consist of?  The Starbucks Pink Drink includes the Strawberry Acai Refresher (a drink that is normally served on ice with water as its base liquid) and instead of water, it is mixed with coconut milk.  It’s easy to make and if you are looking to really keep with the Starbucks flavor – you can certainly pick up your own packet mix from your local Target or Starbucks and mix the powder with ice and coconut milk, add a few chopped up strawberries and you’re good to go.  A few days ago, I ordered my own version of the Pink Drink with a Very Berry Refresher instead of the Strawberry Acai from Starbucks and realized that I wanted something with a little more body to it so I created my own version of the Strawberry Acai since I already had the supplies on hand.

Here’s what you need to create your own Starbucks Pink Drink at home:

  • Strawberries – I decided to go with frozen Strawberries because it’s what I had on hand and I wanted a frothier taste and texture with a little more body.  I used about 20 medium to large sized frozen strawberries to make 62 oz of pink drink.
  • Acai Blend – You can find these at your local grocer in the frozen section.  I always have this on hand because I make homemade Acai Bowls.  If you are using the packets I have – then you’ll want to use half of the packet to 62 oz. of the pink drink.
  • Coconut Milk – You can use any kind you have or want.  I chose the Silk Coconut Milk because it is what we have on hand.  I used approximately 42 oz. of coconut milk added into my pink drink.
  • White Grape Juice Concentrate – these are cheap so I tend to have a few in the freezer at any given time.  The white grape juice is best because it adds a bit of sweetness without changing the color of the juice, leaving it with its pink hue.  You can also use apple juice.  I used approximately 12 oz. of white grape juice concentrate added to my pink drink.

This recipe will make 2 Trenta Sized (31 oz.) cups for a total of 62 oz.  You can opt to use smaller cups but that is what I had to use so I measured accordingly.

In the video embedded above – I share with you what I shared with my Snap Fam. Basically it’s the quick and easy steps in Snapchat form. Making this drink should be easy, fun and literally take a minute or two – making it the perfect summer drink.

  1. Place your strawberries, acai blend and white grape concentrate into a blender, food processor, etc.  I used my Ninja to chop them up and slightly pulse the strawberries so that it would blend all the ingredients, but also break down the strawberries so they were not whole.  You want to leave a little bit of body left in the mix so you get strawberry pieces blended into your drink.  It makes it taste better.  If you are using fresh strawberries, chop up your strawberries that are being placed into the coconut milk, but blend the others to get that pink drink and full bodied flavor.
  2. Add your strawberry, acai and white grape juice mixture in the bottom of your cup.  Since I had gone to Starbucks the day before – I used Trenta cups to host my drink.
  3. Add your coconut milk.  I poured the coconut milk to fill the remainder  3/4 of the cup but still leaving enough room to stir the mixture within the cup without making a mess.
  4. Stir the coconut milk and strawberry mixture together until you see the beautiful pink shade and the milk and fruit blend is combined.
  5. Enjoy!

If the drink is too sweet for you – decrease the amount of white grape concentrate and replace with more coconut milk or just add more coconut milk to the drink.  You can store this in the refrigerator for a few days before drinking, but just make sure you stir up the mixture before serving to combine since the fruit will settle and the coconut milk can separate.

DIY, starbucks, do it yourself, starbucks pink drink, diy pink drink, diy starbucks pink drink, food, drink, delicious, recipe,

Check out my quick Snapchat Video here (which I have uploaded to YouTube for future reference) so that you can kind of see how much you should blend the strawberries to get the right consistency.  But remember… you can’t screw this up – taper the recipe to fit your need and create your own.  This is so easy to make that my family is absolutely loving it and it will be a hit for summer parties.  If you decide to create your own, please be sure to stop in and let me know – I would love to hear how it worked out for you.  Not a strawberry fan?  Use mangoes, any other type of berries, melons or what ever type of fruit you desire.

** And, if you are looking to turn this into a little cocktail for the summer – add coconut rum and you’ll have a delicious summer cocktail beverage.

Have you tried the infamous Pink Drink from Starbucks?  If so, are you planning to try this recipe at home and make your own?  I hope you enjoy!

Happy Summer

Disclaimer:  This is my own take on the infamous Starbucks Pink Drink.  I do not work for Starbucks nor am I getting paid to provide this recipe for anyone.  Affiliate links are posted through out.  It has taken me a few days to get the taste the way I want it, but I do not claim to have come up with the original Starbucks recipe – this is just my own version and take on the drink.  To me it tastes similar and I like it.

What is Gal-Entine’s Day? Celebrating Your Girlfriends on Gal-entine’s Day

Celebrating any holiday is much more fun with our Gal Pals.  So what is Gal-entine’s Day?  Well, it’s basically a time when we as besties gather together with our gals and have a great celebration of friendship.  There’s no need to compare our love trials and tribulations… we all just get together to chit chat and have fun before Valentine’s Day and celebrate the bond we have between friends.  Traditionally celebrated on February 13th (the day before Valentine’s Day), this special day is meant to be fun and a way to not only reconnect with our besties, but to have a little fun.  So – get on the phone, social media and start texting your girlfriends for a day or evening of laughs, fun and excitement to celebrate your friendships.  Wondering what you can do on this Gal-entine’s Day?  Well, read on to get a little inspiration!

Gifts?  Presents?  What do you get for your bestie on Galentine’s Day?

Well, giving your gal pals a little token of your friendship is sweet and perfect for a day like this.  I tend to like to create a little DIY or have something made specifically for my girlfriends.  You can opt to create a friendship bracelet (yes, those are still cool and not only for pre-teens) or even bake something sweet.  Get the gals something that can be personalized like a locket or something that will remind you of your childhood.

DIY – Fun Projects for the Girls

DIY products can be fun to do when you’re with a bunch of friends.  I tend to have a ton of supplies for all kinds of goodies laying around my house in my craft bins, so anything can make for a great product.  Something my sister and I used to do a lot is create candles or soap to give as gifts or to display in our bathrooms and we had so much fun making and using these products.  Bath bombs are fun too or a really easy sugar scrub in cute decorated jars make wonderful creations.  Have fun and let your ideas soar.  It’s not only something to do with your friends, but it’s memento they can take with them when the night is done.

Netflix Anyone?

Am I the only person that enjoys shows like Criminal Minds, Empire or Orange Is The New Black?  Well, why not gather around the tube (television since most people now have flat screens) and binge watch some of your favorite shows with your gal pals.  Order pizza or make a quick Pull Apart Pizza (recipe here) and indulge in some gorgeous chocolate berries from Shari’s Berries.  Not into my flick choices?  Well, choose some of your faves or rock out to Pitch Perfect and have a mini Aca-session with your gals.

Galentine's Day, Valentine's Day, girls day out, shari's berries, girls night,

If you know me, then you know this is not something I take part in often.  I’m the only person in my family that is tone deaf and because of it, no one wants to hear me sing… lol.  But, Karaoke evenings are fun and I have enjoyed taking part in them.  Either pull out your Karaoke machine you have stored away or head over to your local Karaoke Bar and have some fun.  Sing to your favorite tunes and enjoy the night with some appetizers or finger foods (pizza works – can you tell that’s my favorite food) or delightful desserts.  Belt your heart out to your favorite tunes and have a party.

Paint ’N Wine Event

There are a few locally owned places on island where I live that offer a paint event (sometimes a little wine) that you can take part in.  These cool events allow you and your friends to go and get a very awesome painting instructional class from an artist/teacher and allow you to create the masterpiece yourself.  While there you have the chance to have a little wine and talk story all while having a great time.  Note that if you take part in these, make sure you have a designated driver accompany you or pick you up from the venue as it can be a lot of fun.  You can take the painting home after and remember your night with your girls.  If painting and wine are not your thing, see what kind of “tasting” events are available.  A local restaurant here offers a Tea Time event once a week where you drink tea and have a light brunch under the trees in a beautiful courtyard.  It’s gorgeous and so much fun .

Makeover Madness

Ah, as a beauty and makeup lover, I knew I had to include this.  A day of pampering is always fun.  Gather your gal pals and pull out your favorite makeup, skin care items and mani pedi favorites and do a little pampering.  If you have a local Mary Kay representative or an Avon rep, contact them to see if they would like to do makeovers while sharing their products with your gals.  Since I have a makeup artist kit, I tend to pull those out and just make it a fun activity for everyone.  I may do smoky eyes on all the girls (something they are not used to) or do a full pedicure and manicure on each.  All of this fun while eating and drinking and dancing to your favorite songs.  It’s like a sleepover without sleeping – just old school fun.  I also like to up together little bags of treats for each friend – including a nail file, some chocolates of course, and anything beauty related.  ELF offers some good makeup for a $1.00 and you can stuff a bunch of treat bags with things that you love and know they will love too.  Looking for fun ideas on makeup looks to create?  Head on over to my Valentine’s Day Playlist on YouTube and get a little inspired.

Don’t leave out your Far Away Besties

I don’t know about you, but I have friends all over the World and many of them live hours away from me let alone a whole continent.  While they live so far away, I still want to let them know that I’m always thinking of them.  A sweet card that comes with something special or a handmade sentiment is always a great thing.  It will be great if it gets to her on February 13th so she checks her mail box and is surprised.  Also, with technology now a days, there are many ways to communicate face to face without being there in person so Skype and have a chat to catch up.  This is the perfect opportunity to talk about your Valentine’s Day plans and to share that new outfit you bought for the special occasion.

Who’s Up For A Girl’s Trip?

Living on an island really doesn’t help much for road trips here, but what is so great is that Hawaii is filled with so many awesome destinations that it’s easy to find sanctuary anywhere.  If you and your friends are riding the single train for now, hey – what better time than to plan a girl’s weekend trip.  Head to your favorite resort and spend the weekend at the pool or at the spa and just rejuvenate your body for the following Monday.  Not single?  Well, that doesn’t mean you can’t do this too… take a drive to wine country (here on Maui, we can head up to Tedeschi Vineyards) and have a wine tasting and then breakfast at Kula Lodge.  The options are endless whether you live on Maui or are anywhere in the World.  Sometimes a weekend getaway with your gal pals are the perfect way to really relax and rejuvenate the soul.  And, what better way to have some relaxation than with your besties.

Day Trip to Buy Makeup

This may sound like an odd one… but since our local Sephora is a two hour drive away, my sisters and I have a tradition where we drive together (all three of us) and take a trip to the other side of the island to go shopping at our local Sephora.  This gives us about 4 – 6 hours of time with one another (sometimes longer) and we get to chit chat makeup, have brunch and just relax and enjoy each others company.  Most the time we don’t even buy makeup but spend an hour walking around Sephora chatting about our favorite products and testing out new ones we have yet to try.  It’s our time together and we enjoy it.

While Galentine’s Day is February 13th, I think that any time of the year you are feeling like you need a little Gal love is appropriate to do something like this for your girls.  Your besties are the ones that see you through every single trial and tribulation, every event and exciting moment.  Celebrating with one another and sharing the love you have with each other is a great thing to do all the time, but especially on Galentine’s Day.  What are you doing for your gal pals this year?  Comment below and share some ideas that you may have!

Did you know there was such thing as a Gal-entine’s Day?  If not, how do you plan to make use of this new day each year.

Today in Microfashion… A few weeks ago, Luke & Isaiah’s school celebrated Spirit Week and included Book Character Day for the students.  Each child was to work with their families to create a costume (or inspired outfit) from the child’s favorite book.  Choosing a favorite book in our household is near to impossible since everyone in our home loves to read – but the twins settled on characters from their favorite Dr. Seuss books – Cat In The Hat and Green Eggs and Ham.  Creating the costumes were very fun and luckily I had most of the supplies on hand.  I promised the twins that I would share how I created their costumes with all of you – so today I bring to you a little Easy DIY Dr. Seuss Books Costumes.

Book Character Dress Up Day - Easy DIY Dr. Seuss Cat In The Hat and Sam I Am Costumes

Using what the twins had in their closets – we chose out clothes like a black and yellow (neon yellow) shirt to use with their outfits.  Since it was a chilly day we opted for a pair of denim jeans which worked and offered a casual flare while still giving the twins their own identity.  I picked up a few items at the store – like red, white, yellow and green felt, but most of the supplies I needed to create their costumes, I already had on hand.

Isaiah chose to be the Cat in the Hat.  While his costume was simplistic, it required a little more work than Luke’s with the hat having so many steps to create it.  Here’s what I did.

Book Character Dress Up Day - Easy DIY Dr. Seuss Cat In The Hat and Sam I Am Costumes

Starting with the hat, I first used foam core board and cut out a round base to use as the brim of the hat.  Then taking the red and white felt (I had them in 8″x 10″ pieces from Walmart), I cut them down to size – 2 inches in width and glued each strip together to create parts of the top hat.  I used my hot glue gun to do this as it was faster for me then sewing since I sew by hand (no machine).  I adjoined the pieces together to form the hat using white thread and stitched it by hand and then glued it to the brim that I created and covered with white felt.

I used the same red felt to draw a bow and glued it to a white strip of felt and then sewed a button on it so it could attach to his neck and could be easily taken off or put on.  He wore a black shirt and his jeans and his outfit was complete.

Supplies needed:

  • 1 square foot of foam core board
  • red felt – I used approximately 3 and 1/2 – 8″x 10″ sheets
  • white felt – I used approximately 3 – 8″x 10″ sheets
  • scissors
  • glue gun with glue sticks (or sewing machine / thread and needle)
  • thread and needle
  • black permanent marker (to trace the outline of the bow)
  • red button

The video where I show the details and explain each item can be found here.

Book Character Dress Up Day - Easy DIY Dr. Seuss Cat In The Hat and Sam I Am Costumes

Luke chose to be Sam I Am from Green Eggs & Ham.  His costume was fairly easy to put together though it took me a little while to figure out how to create the ham on his plate.  Starting with his sign – I took a piece of foam core board and cut it out so that it looked cartoon-ish, writing the words “Sam I am” similar to that from the book.  I then hot glued a wooden dowel to the back of the sign so that he could hold it in his hands.

Making the red hat for Sam was a little trickier.  I had to take 3 pieces of red felt (the 8×10 I mentioned) and pieced them together with hot glue so it would have a similar shape to what Sam wears in the book.  It kind of looks like an elf’s hat, with a triangle shape so that when we turned it inside out, it would have a slight curve at the top.  The Green Eggs and Ham was simple… by cutting a round shape out of the foam core board, I covered the board with yellow felt and created the shapes for the eggs and the ham, which I stuffed with scrap felt from the pieces I had cut.  Everything used to create Luke’s costume was sewed together with a hot glue gun.  I also glued an elastic band on the back of the plate so Luke could slip the plate on his wrists and not have to carry it around with him.

Supplies needed:

  • 2 square feet of foam core board
  • red felt – I used approximately 3 and 1/2 – 8″x 10″ sheets
  • white felt – I used approximately 1 – 8″x 10″ sheet
  • scissors
  • glue gun with glue sticks (or sewing machine / thread and needle)
  • black permanent marker (to write on the sign)
  • elastic band

Check out my video where I walk you through the steps here and show you the detail of each item I created.  I apologize that I did not film tutorials or take photos as I was doing this project since they were kind of impromptu.

Book Character Dress Up Day - Easy DIY Dr. Seuss Cat In The Hat and Sam I Am Costumes

The boys absolutely loved their costumes and were so proud to tell their friends and teachers at school that I created them and they got to help.  I spent very little money – less than $15 to create the whole thing and if I had to add in the cost of their shirts, it would be less than $25 for both.  What we enjoyed about these costumes were that they were easy to put on easy to take off.  If the boys decided that they no longer wanted to wear them, they could remove the props and put them away.  These costumes are very easy – they just take a little creativity and time to pull it all together.  I think they would make a fun choice for Book Character Day for any school or even Halloween.

Be sure to check out the video above where I explain each step and show you all the little details of each prop.  If you decide to create your own costumes using inspiration from ours, please be sure to comment and let us know.  What about you?  What would you select for Book Character Day as your dress up costume?

Happy DIY and Fun!
