makeup tools

I’m a wholehearted believer that great makeup application is done with great tools.  But, over the years I’ve learned that your tools or makeup do not need to be expensive or have a luxury price tag to get the job done.  I have tried a variety of different tools from different brands and I can attest that quality and cost are not always one in the same.  Beauty Junkees has easily become one of my favorite makeup brush brands (and makeup brands for that matter) and today I’m sharing with all of you a new collection of brushes.

Beauty Junkees is a brand I’ve talked about here on the blog many times.  I’ve recommended their products to many friends and readers over the years and it’s become a favorite of mine to use for just about every and any occasion.  What I love about Beauty Junkees is that they are so affordable, that it makes creating your everyday makeup looks an absolute breeze.  Beauty Junkees brushes and cosmetic products are sold via their website and on their Amazon Storefront.

Let’s talk about their new Duo Fiber Collection.  Retailing for just $29.97, this set includes 6 brushes and come with a faux leather zip-up bag.  Each brush is labeled with its use/name so that beginners or pros can utilize the tool for what it’s for.  The 6 piece Duo Fiber Makeup Brush Set has long and short synthetic hairs to pick up and distribute the perfect amount of makeup.  Each application will provide a sheer, flawless, skin-perfecting finish.  Back in my freelance days I often used duo-fiber brushes to apply cream and liquid products so that it left the skin and application soft and blended.  The short bristles hold the product, while the long bristles blend to a featherweight finish.  These brushes work great with liquids, creams, and powders.  They are ideal brushes for acneic, scarred, dry or aging skin.  Each brush comes with a solid wood handle with double crimped copper ferrules.  I love how soft these are and the fact that there is such a great selection of brush type in this set.  You can literally create a look using just this set of brushes, from foundation and concealer down to the eye makeup and highlight.  These brushes do not shed and are just perfect considering the price point and how affordable they are.

The Pro Powder set comes with 3 brushes and retails for $19.97.  This gorgeous brush set also comes in a faux leather zip-up bag and is also labeled for easy to use simplicity.  The 3 Piece Pro Powder Makeup Brush Set is best used to apply powder all over the face and body for that gorgeous, polished finish.  These brushes work great with loose, pressed, minerals, blush, contour and highlighter powders and I love how soft and fluffy they are.  They are made with high density synthetic Taklon bristles and are vegan-friendly.  Each brush comes with a solid wood handle, double crimped copper ferrule and is created to not shed.  I love this set because it is the perfect type of brush for an effortless application or all over color.  Did I mention these were soft?  My gosh, they are so soft that it’s hard to not want to pet them 😉

I’m always excited to try new products from the Beauty Junkees line.  The brand has flourished and extended their line of products a lot since I first started using the brand about three years ago.  With over 200 makeup brushes in my collection, I find that I will always pull for a Makeup Junkees brush before any other brand.  I am also a huge fan of the different makeup they now have available – from eyeshadows to blush and highlight (lippies and brow products too).  Beauty Junkees is becoming one of my favorite brands for a wide selection of beauty products.  You can search {Beauty Junkees} on the blog and read up on some of my favorites from the brand.

If you’re like me and love a minimal makeup look or go for a glammed up smoky eye, I definitely suggest checking out what Beauty Junkees has to offer.  I think that price really doesn’t always determine the quality and in this case, the quality surpasses the price point making these brush sets an absolute steal.

Happy Tuesday loves.  Today I’m coming to you with a review on another Michael Todd Beauty product.  If you’ve been here on my blog for a while now, you know that I have an absolute crush on the Soniclear Cleansing Brush so I am excited to share with you my thoughts on the SonicBLEND Antimicrobial Makeup Brush.

Retailing for $99.00, the Michael Todd SonicBLEND is the first of its kind makeup brush that applies your makeup at sonic speeds up to 200 times per second.  It also has built in protection against microbial contamination so that your brush stays cleaner, fresher longer.  This brush is intended for comfort and control with an ergonomic design.  SonicBLEND uses gentle sonic movements to help easily sweep on foundation without leaving lines or streaks.  This brush is ideal for applying foundation, blush, contour, highlight, setting powder and bronzer.  It is said to effortlessly blend your favorite liquid or powder makeup in extra fine layers for natural looking airbrushed-like results each time you use the brush.

Intuitive patent based technology that uses sonic movements to prevent clumping by dispersing individual granules of makeup into wrinkles, enlarged pores & fine lines for a 3D flawless makeup application

SonicBLEND is also designed to provide you with better coverage so you use less makeup.  And, with it’s antimicrobial brush head, SonicBLEND can help you improve the overall healthy look of your complexion by minimizing the possibility of clogging pores as well as irritation from rubbing, stretching the skin and other things that can occur with traditional makeup application.

System includes:

  • Cordless, rechargeable sonic brush handle
  • Antimicrobial makeup brush head
  • USB Charging Cable
  • User guide
  • 1 year warranty

Sonic bristle movements oscillate thousands of times per minute to ensure an airbrush-like finish

The SonicBLEND system or base unit I shall say is available in three different colors/designs – black, pink (which I have) and a cool leopard design.  There are two types of brush heads available for purchase separately as well – the Natural Round Top Universal Brush Head No. 4 and Flat Top Replacement Universal Brush Head No. 8.  The SonicBLEND unit comes with the standard makeup brush head.

So let’s chit chat about all the details of this product, my thoughts and what I think about the product overall.  First of all, I absolutely love the fact that this unit does not require any batteries… it comes with a USB cord to charge your brush and you can plug it into your computer or it’s perfect for on the go.  It’s an interesting product and something I think I’ve been kind of enjoying for contouring lately.  The brush is so soft… so so soft.  Using the brush is really easy – simply apply the product you want to use with it and turn the unit on.  I have been enjoying this brush for my contour and bronzing most of all.  I have tried this brush with a number of different products – BB Cream, CC Cream, Foundation, Highlighter, Blush and Bronzer.  I found that out of all the products, it worked best for me when using with a bronzer (both powder and cream work fairly well).

Michael Todd, SonicBlend, makeup brush, brush, sonic makeup brush, makeup brush review, review, product review, soniclear, foundation brush, foundation, foundation, makeup review, sonic,

Since I don’t often use foundation, I wanted to test and see how this product worked with those types of products.  The brush really likes cream and liquid products it seems.  While it worked to apply the foundations and creams to my face, I found that it moved the product around a lot.  I’ve been trying this brush now for about 3 weeks consistently and found that the weight of the handle may be making it a challenge for me to apply.  Nonetheless, I continue to apply and test this out to see how it works.  The brush doesn’t spin so you don’t have to worry about foundation splashing or splattering anywhere.  The sonic vibrations help to get the product (liquid or cream foundation) into the lines and pores for even and better coverage – but I just found that it was a lot of work and the product did move around more than I would like.  After talking with a few friends that own this brush – I think it may have been due to my use and the fact that I haven’t been able to get the hang out of using it for foundation type products.

Michael Todd, SonicBlend, makeup brush, brush, sonic makeup brush, makeup brush review, review, product review, soniclear, foundation brush, foundation, foundation, makeup review, sonic,

When it comes to contouring and bronzing, I really enjoy how this lays down the product and then going back with the brush it blends it out effortlessly.  I honestly think it may be my use of the brush that is making it a challenge.  I love that this brush doesn’t soak up product so you definitely use less of it.  One big positive for me is how my foundation looked on the skin once I was able to actually apply the product the way it was needed to be.  There was no creasing, the look of airbrushed makeup was definitely achieved.  But, since I’m impatient, the learning curve in applying product can be a hassle for me.  Oh – did I mention that I didn’t get any shedding… I have washed this brush three times since using it and haven’t had any shedding that I could see with my own eyes.  I thought that was definitely a good thing, especially with a brush you use to apply foundation.

Ideal for applying foundation as well as applying blush, contour, highlight, setting powder & bronzers for a seamless, perfectly blended makeup application that mirrors results of what professional makeup artists can achieve

I think SonicBLEND and Michael Todd could benefit from a brush that is less compact and dense.  This brush makes for a great kabuki style, but I just felt that it was a bit uncomfortable with applying.  A brush head that has longer bristles and is less compact would make a big difference in applying foundation.  I’m looking forward to Michael Todd releasing more brushes for different and various uses.  I would love to see a brush head specifically for chiseled contours, a fluffy blush brush, a fluffy powder brush and a flat top kabuki style brush that is compact, but less dense as the current one that offers longer bristles for a great application.

Michael Todd, SonicBlend, makeup brush, brush, sonic makeup brush, makeup brush review, review, product review, soniclear, foundation brush, foundation, foundation, makeup review, sonic,

Each replacement brush head retails between $26 – $30.  I love that the brush heads are antimicrobial… this makes it perfect for my sensitive skin so that I don’t have to worry about irritations and I did notice that the irritations and breakouts I get from regular brushes (even if clean) was not occurring with the SonicBLEND.  This brush however, is an investment.  I think it’s great that you can get more brush heads and reuse it.  I think it would be great for travel – take a few brush heads and the unit and you’re good to go.  But, the price point is a bit hefty.  I have expensive makeup brushes in my collection that could easily be replaced with this brush if there were a few changes made.  I’d love to see a collection of brush heads in the set and a small brush handle would make it easy for me to use with my carpel tunnel.  It’s a neat invention and definitely something I think worth checking out if you have the opportunity.

I think new tools for beauty are always a great find and at $99.00 this is a pretty hefty cost, but something to check out and see if it works for you.  I have several friends that own the unit themselves and swear by it… while I’m still on the fence of whether or not I think it’s something I would NEED.  I look forward to seeing what else Michael Todd will come out with to compliment this fun brush for sure.

What about you, have you  heard of the SonicBLEND?  Have you tried it before or is this something you think you’d enjoy?  Comment below and let me know.

Well – well… today we are going to chit chat about brushes.  It’s no secret that it is one of the many things I collect when it comes to beauty.  Let’s face it, an artist needs their tools and a great set of tools is essential.  I have tried them all and with a collection of over 250 makeup brushes, I’m always interested in trying out new ones.  With the cost of a cosmetic brush ranging anywhere from $4.00 to $40.00 in price and in some cases more, I always appreciate a referral on a good one that I can not only utilize but enjoy using.  Today I’m going to share with you my thoughts on Beauty Junkees Makeup Brush Sets.  These affordable beauties have been a new favorite in my makeup arsenal and I think I should share them with you.

Also – it’s still technically the holidays, so you could snag some for that loved one or as a treat to yourself before Christmas.

Holiday Gift Guide - Fun Stocking Stuffers

The first set I am going to talk about is my favorite.  The 8 Piece Pro Series Brush Set comes with everything you need to create the perfect eye look.  Retailing for $39.97 (currently on sale for $24.97 – not sure how long the sale will last) you receive 8 gorgeous and well made eye brushes and a great quality zip top brush case.

You receive the following brushes:

  1. Pro Pencil – used for smudging eye liner or apply shadow for a more defined and precision application.
  2. Pro Tapered Blending – used for applying and blending shadow on the eye or use to apply transition shade to the crease.
  3. Pro All Over Shader – with dense bristles this is used to pack shadow on the entire lid but still can be used to blend some.
  4. Pro Precision Eye liner – perfect for tight lining the upper and lower lash lines using liquid, gel or cream (powders too).  I especially like to use this brush to smudge out the lower lash line and smoke it out.
  5. Pro Angled Shading – this is a great brush to apply to shadow to the brow bone or to blend color into the crease.
  6. Pro Flat Definer – use this brush to create a sharp and precise line o nthe upper and lower lash line with your liner or product of choice – cream, gel, powder.
  7. Pro Blending – This great brush is used to blend powder shadows and buff harsh lines to give a gorgeous and diffused effect.
  8. Pro Crease – use this brush to apply shadow in the crease for a soft and diffused effect.

Each brush comes with a solid wood handle – sturdy and well made and a double crimped copper ferrule.  The ferrule is positioned well and holds the brush hair in place perfectly.  I haven’t had any issues with shedding and love that each brush can be used with a variety of mediums – powders, creams and liquids.

Affordable Makeup Brushes - Beauty Junkees Makeup Brush Sets

I love that this eye set includes all the brushes I need to create a great eye look and more so it has brushes that are essential for any makeup brush arsenal.  Each one is well made and well put together and after much washing, I haven’t noticed any shedding (with exception to tiny hair during initial wash – which is normal) after many uses.  The brushes are soft and well made and the blending brushes remind me of some of my favorites from well known high-end brands.  I’m absolutely loving them.

Affordable Makeup Brushes - Beauty Junkees Makeup Brush Sets

Next is the Mini 5 Piece Kabuki Makeup Brush Set with brush case.  This set retails for $39.97 (on sale right now for $18.97) and includes 5 brushes in the set.  The name “mini” does not refer to the size of the brush handle, but the size of the actual brushes as this is a smaller size to the actual Kabuki brushes you would use to apply foundation.  These little brushes are so fun and perfect for people like me who contour and apply highlight.  Each brush is dense but soft and made specifically so that they will not soak up excess amounts of product.  This is particularly awesome for those that like to use cream based products as these brushes will allow you to get the right amount of product with an easy application.

Included in this brush set:

  1. Mini Flat Makeup Brush – this brush is my favorite for buffing out my contour along the sides of my nose for a more chiseled and defined look without looking harsh.  It’s perfect for stippling concealer onto sun spots, blemishes and other small imperfections as well.
  2. Mini Angled Makeup Brush – this brush is a favorite because it can be used on the eyes for blending, I love to use it to apply my ColourPop eye shadows into the crease or apply as transition.  This brush is also dense enough to use as a foundation brush or to contour your cheekbones.
  3. Mini Flat Angled Makeup Brush – this brush combines the blending application of the flat kabuki with the contouring application of the angled kabuki – packed into a mini for precision contouring anywhere on the face.  I especially love this brush for also contouring down the sides of my nose and to really provide a chiseled and defined contour below my cheekbones.
  4. Mini Tapered Makeup Brush – this brush was designed to provide coverage in hard to reach areas such as the eyelid, corner of the eye and under eye for a flawless finish.  I love using this brush to blend out my cream or liquid highlight or to also contour since the tip allows you to really define the areas.
  5. Mini Round Makeup Brush – this brush has a variety of uses but is perfect for mineral makeup concealer to buff the product on and blend or to just apply as an all over contour brush for detail and precision.

Each brush is made of high density synthetic bristles and is vegan friendly.  They each come with a solid wood handle that includes a double crimped copper ferrule and I haven’t noticed any shedding with this product.  They can be used with liquid,  powder or creams and I find these work especially well with my ColourPop shadows.  Due to the size of these minis (the bristle size) they are not intended for full face coverage when applying foundation, but great for detail work.

Affordable Makeup Brushes - Beauty Junkees Makeup Brush Sets

After years of spending lots and lots of money on makeup brushes – I’m beyond impressed with Beauty Junkees not only for the price point, but the quality.  Each brush comes with a sturdy wooden handle that is long making application easy for me when using them.  I’m very particular with the weight of my brushes, especially because of my Carpel Tunnel and find that these are well weighted but not too heavy that it will hurt me when using them for long periods of time.  That is especially important when you’re a makeup artist because after a while of doing several clients in a row, your hands and arms can get very tired and sore if the brush is too heavy.  Even if they are light weight, they still have a good balance making application and blending a breeze.  It’s all about that balance and movement in the wrist that really helps with the blending technique.  The cinching in the ferrules for each brush is absolutely well made and done to perfection which means your brushes will last longer with proper cleaning and care.  I found that cleaning each brush is easy.  I use my Parian Spirt or regular brush cleaner as well as soap and water without any issues and after several cleaning with using these brushes they kept their shape well, dried nicely and I didn’t experience any shedding.

I didn’t discuss the brow brush but know that for $10 – the Pro Brow Brush has a great spoolie on the end and an awesome angle brush which works well with gel or powder.  It’s pretty fabulous too.

No matter how many makeup brushes you own, going through each one and then knowing you have to clean them and disinfect them later gets exhausting – just the thought of it makes me tired.  There are products on the market that help with faster cleaning but never has there been a product besides a tissue or napkin that would allow you to quickly remove the shadows from your brush so that you can use it again.  Honestly, that method didn’t work accurately either, since sometimes residual product would still be left on the brush and transfer to the new shade you were using.

Just about a year ago I was introduced to a product called Color Switch by Vera Mona.  This product is now available in different selections and offers any person using a makeup brush the ease of removing the color on your brush allowing you to then use the same brush in a different shade.  You can go from dark colors to light colors and vice versa without color transfer to either or a muddy look when applying the shadows and blending.  This product is quite simple and made perfect for a makeup artist to toss into their kit.  While it doesn’t clean your brush or disinfect it – if you are like me and like to apply color and then blend the shades with the same brush, this is a great product for you.  No more are the days of color transfer or muddy blending.

Veramona Color Switch

The Creator of Color Switch – Letty Cabrera-Calvo got the idea for the product from frustration of using multiple brushes when applying eye shadow.  Now Color Switch is available in different designs for your needs:

  • Color Switch Solo – this product doesn’t have the wet sponge center and is used solely for removing eye shadow from your brush.  Retails for $16.99
  • Color Switch Duo – (pictured above) is used to not only remove the eye shadow from your brush but also has a sponge center that you can wet to use to apply your shadows wet/foiled.  Retails for $19.99
  • Color Switch Proband – Newly added to the line, this awesome product is a makeup artist must-have.  It attaches to your wrist to allow you to clean your brush for switching up colors on the move.  Retails for $34.99

Check out my video for a quick demo.  Watch it directly on YouTube here.

Vera Mona also offers refills that you can purchase to replace what you have in your Color Switch – the Solo, Duo and Sponges are all available for purchase on the site as well as a few other products like brushes and sets to help complete your set.  You can also easily wash your color switch by removing the inner sponge and washing with water – I also like to wash with soap and then rinse well.  I have been able to wash my sponges easily and many times before purchasing replacements.

I have had this product now for almost a year and overall it is a product I’m thankful for.  It saves me time and is perfect for quick use.  I can’t wait to get my hands on the Proband and look forward to purchasing some of these for friends.  Have you tried the Color Switch from Vera Mona before?  If you watch my videos I’m sure you have seen me talk about it many times, but if you haven’t… is this a product you think you would get use out of?

Signature Honey

This product was sent to me for review and consideration.  I also purchased products following PR samples for upkeep with my own money.  All opinions are my own – 100% honest and unbiased.

I have tried many different Crown Brushes in the course of the last 4 years and I’ve always been amazed at their quality even if they sold at such an affordable price point.  I was super excited to get these because 1) I’m a Purple Addict and 2) It would give me the opportunity to try out Crown’s HD Brushes.

Upon receipt of these (via iFabbo) I was very excited because the brushes came in a cool purple pouch all zipped up tight and ready to play.  Now, if you know anything about me, it’s that I am a Brush addict (well, makeup addict – but I can’t resist buying a quality brush set), so I couldn’t wait to dive right in.  The brushes felt very soft to touch and when I washed them, they seemed to hold up okay through the washing process.  There was a bit of shedding but not a crazy amount and surprisingly I didn’t get any color bleed as I have in the past with brush sets that had their tips colored.

After their wash & dry, I was still amazed that the brushes held their Super soft feel and it wasn’t compromised after I gave them each a bath.  They are fairly nice in weight.  I like my brushes to have long handles so it did take a bit to get used to them, however – they each were pretty comfortable in my hands.  I tried the tweezers first.  It’s quite sturdy and seemed to work like most tweezers do.  It was able to grab onto my little brow hairs so that was a plus.

Next – The Pro Powder Brush:  This worked fairly well with applying a setting powder.  I do not use Foundation or Face Powders at all, so I took this brush for a quick spin to see it’s overall.  It’s fluffy enough to blend your powder (whether setting or foundation) in quite nicely and is super soft so it will be nice on the skin.

Tapered Blush Brush: It has a nice taper to it so it worked well for applying blush and keeping it exactly where I wanted it to go.  I also like that it is small and tapered enough so I can also use it to apply bronzer.  This brush is probably one of my favorites out of the set.

Deluxe Contour Brush:  This brush worked okay for contouring the hollows of my cheeks but since it was pretty small I noticed that it concentrated the product in one area which is not how I like to wear my bronzer.  I like to ensure a perfect blend so that it gives the illusion of shadow but doesn’t leave a harsh line or cast.  This brush works well to apply color and then I use the Tapered Blush Brush to blend the bronzer out.  It also works well to apply bronzer town the sides of my nose.

Crease Blender: This brush was domed shaped – similar to those you see on the market today.  I wondered how well it would work since the bristles were so long but it actually worked out pretty well.  I used it to blend out my eye shadow and to also apply my transition shade.  I like it – it’s one of my favorites.

Chisel Shadow Brush: This brush worked well as an eye shadow brush and to apply cream shadow.  Since it is domed and not as thick, it allowed me to pack a good amount of color on the brush and apply to my lids.  Be sure to tap off the brush first before applying to keep from fall out when using loose or pressed shadows.

Detail Liner Brush:  This one is probably my least favorite in the bunch.  The tip itself I think is thin enough for cream / gel liners, but I feel like it’s lacking in body with regard to the bristles.  It held the product nicely and applied gel/cream liner to my eye lids nicely – but it takes a little finesse and you really have to coat the product on the brush so that the bristles do not flair out and cause a mess.  It works, but it takes some getting used to.

Crown’s HD Brush Set comes in purple, orange and white (with blue tips) and retail on Crown’s website for $27.95  USD.  Overall, I think for the price, it’s a great value.  The case that the brushes come in is sturdy and great for traveling.  I definitely love that it comes with a tweezers and a mirror which makes it a great companion for over night stays or traveling.  If I had to make one suggestion it is that I wish that there was a flat top kabuki style brush in the mix.  That would be perfect for those who use liquid foundations.  I think the powder brush is perfect for foundation application – but now as ideal for liquid.  I tried and while the bristles held the product… it didn’t buff it into the skin as effortlessly as I would  have liked.
