Petunia Skin Care Derma Roller

I am all for testing out new gadgets for skin care but I’m not gonna lie, I was definitely terrified of this one.  When I first seen a similar product advertised by another brand a few years back, I was scared to even look at it, so I was a bit apprehensive to test this product out initially.  Come on now, rubbing needles up and down parts of your body or face can’t possibly be a great thing.  But, I figured I would finally jump in and test it out, I like acupuncture so this can’t be that different, can’t it?

Petunia Skincare is a brand I have used before and I’m a huge fan of their Hyaluronic Acid and other serums, so I figured I would give this particular product a test run.  The Derma Roller retails on Petunia’s website for just under $18 and comes with 540 very fine medical grade tiny stainless steel needles.  This tool is used to help smooth facial scars, stimulate collagen and elastin production and help with scar removal and stretch marks.  It can diminish the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, stimulate hair growth and you can save money from surgical and laser treatments if you continue to use the product where needed.  What I think is really cool is that it can be used on any part of the skin.

Basically – when running the roller on your skin, it creates micro-channels in the skin that allow products to penetrate the skin at a deeper level than just at the surface.  Having never used anything like this before, I was very interested and intrigued but also a bit scared.  Looking at the product right out of the box was okay – but once I took it out and really looked at it, I felt like I was giving myself to a Chinese torture device and I was not excited.

Rolling the needles against my skin did feel uncomfortable at first but after using it a few minutes I figured out my pain threshold and what would work best for me.  I found that after a few sessions of using this product, that it really didn’t have any pain and it worked nicely and glided easily over my skin.  With 540 needles all evenly dispersed on the roller, there was not one needle but several that provided an even roll.  While I do think it could be uncomfortable for some, I think that it is much more painful thinking about how much it will hurt because of how it looks rather than using it.

I’ve been using the roller on my face now for about a month and while I didn’t notice a difference at first, after a few weeks I noticed that a few of my acne scars have diminished.  While you can still see them, they are much lighter than before.  I also notice that when I use the roller and then apply my serums, my serums seem to soak in much faster but I also noticed that my skin brightening serum really does make my skin look brighter and my face feels softer and smoother.

I am going to be picking up a second roller to use on my body so I can try to diminish the look of my cellulite on my thighs.  I’m quite pleased at how well this worked and I was more than a bit skeptical over the years, so I’m very happy that I had the opportunity to test out this product when I did.  I think this will be a product I’ll continue to use as a part of my skin care regimen.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

    • I totally didn’t even talk about that in my post…..errr… You will soak your needle head in the compartment that you store it in with alcohol – then rinse with hot water. Then you use bleach. I also use a toothbrush before doing all of that to make sure I’m scrubbing it as well, but they did not mention that with the directions for cleaning. I was super worried about infection… but haven’t had any problems and it cleaned up well.

  1. it still kind of freaks me out a bit when I look at it… but when I use it – I take my time and roll it over my face evenly and softly. 🙂

  2. This looks super cool! I want it! I’m not at all scared, I swear 😉

  3. I saw a YouTuber do rolling once and it freaked me out. I’d try it on some minor scarring I have on my chin.

I used a micro needle roller a few years ago and it hurt like hell! I think a lot of it was b/c of the serum but it totally turned me off to any other rollers!

  5. I’m surprised it worked so well on your face. I have one that is not for facial use, so maybe the size of the needles is different. I LOVE mine. My tip – use oil first, and then the needles don’t hurt.

    • I just found out from a friend who’s a cosmetologist that I have been using it wrong and that I’m using the wrong size for my face :/ I’m pretty disappointed to say the least. I will stop use on my face and try on my body and follow up. And, I’m gonna try that tip of yours – thank you.

  6. WOW, 1mm is too big for home use!! I would never recommend such long needles for a first-time user and especially without any professional guidance. 0.25mm needles are more than enough for the face. You must have a high pain threshold!!

    • I was just talking to my friend who is a cosmetologist and she just said that to me, she said it was too big for the face. We were talking and she asked me to show her how I do it and apparently I am not applying much pressure – that is why it doesn’t hurt… I’ve been literally using it wrong. Oi. Go figure. She suggested I use it on my cellulite or body instead. I do have a fairly high pain threshold but also wondered why I didn’t have holes in my face as I have heard before… but I just wasn’t applying enough pressure for much of anything if that makes sense. I’ll be doing a follow up in the future on how it works on my cellulite on my thighs. :/

      • Ahhhh ok that makes sense. Yes, pressure has a lot to do with it so no wonder you weren’t drawing blood. I draw blood even with just a .25mm! I use a .5mm on my body but i have a low pain threshold. I’m still nervous about you diving in to a 1mm without using a smaller one first but keep consulting with your cosmetologist friend so that you can prevent any damage. 1mm bordering on micro-wounding (usually a 1.5mm is used) rather than just product penetration. I don’t want to link spam but i wrote about the roller i use on my body at http://bit.ly/1dIoxkD

        • Kimmi, she showed me on my leg… and I started to bleed and almost punched her in the face…. not that I’m a violent kind of person, but it did hurt me bad. And you’re not linking spam… I’m glad I’m getting more information than I had gotten before using it. Leila asked me why I didn’t ask her about it first and I just assumed I knew what I was doing… good grief. I’m disappointed in myself to say the least.

  7. It did… so I can’t use it near the areas where I have my eczema flare ups because it causes it to get bad. But I just talked to one of my cosmetologist friends who freaked out when she read my blog post and we just had a 2 hour chat about what I should and shouldn’t do. :/ Looks like I’ll be using this on my cellulite on my thighs from now on.

  8. It was painful the first time but found out from a friend I have been using it wrong… and that I should have been in an extreme amount of pain :/ I hate that.

  9. I have a friend that is an esthetician and she asked me to demo how I use it for me…. I have been using it really softly so that is why it was uncomfortable, but not so much that I was in pain. She suggested that I use a smaller mm for the size so I’ll be using this on my cellulite if I decide to still use it. Try coconut oil for your scars as well – my own personal experience, that has helped with some scars. 🙂
