How You Can Help Your Teen Navigate Tough Times

If there’s one thing that all parents can agree on, it’s that parenting is one of the most challenging jobs in the world. And, things only get harder as they get older and puberty hits. It can be particularly challenging when you feel like your teenager is going through a hard time and you can’t do anything about it. Sadly, there’s not much you can do about the things teenagers have to face like worries about their grades, peer pressure, and the ongoing changes in their body.

When this happens, it can lead to emotional and behavioral struggles, and while you want to do everything in your power to make things better for them, it’s simply impossible. If you’re worried about your teenager, check out these tips on how you can help them tackle these struggles and learn positively from their experiences.

Learn the signs

Teenagers are well known for their erratic mood swings and out-of-the-ordinary behavior. And, while it can be challenging, it’s completely normal for them to push boundaries or struggle with the way their changing hormones are making them feel and act. So how do you know when there are signs that you should be worried about? Your teenager might show signs like:

  1. Unexplained decline in their grades
  2. Consistently changing friend groups
  3. Use of drugs or alcohol
  4. Talk of self-harm or suicide
  5. Unusual anger or defiance

These signs usually indicate deeper issues that will need lots of attention and support. Remember that if your teenager shows these signs, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are “troubled”. These signs are usually a cry for help because they are experiencing things they don’t know how to process yet. Being there for them (without judgment) is the best first step you can take when it comes to tackling these behaviors.

Keep communication open at all times

Teenagers often close themselves off because they don’t feel like they’re being listened to or because they feel whatever they say is going to get them into trouble. And, while it’s important for you to take action if you hear something alarming about them, it’s how you handle the situation that will make all of the difference.

Take the time to actually spend time with your teenager! While it’s natural for teenagers not to want to spend every waking moment with Mommy, they also want that time to talk. Make the effort to actually listen to what they have to say, and avoid interrupting them. Even if you don’t agree with what they’re saying or don’t particularly like it, you’re building their trust to come to you no matter what’s going on in their lives.

How you communicate with your teen is also something to concentrate on. Sometimes asking “Did you have a good day?” might make them focus on all of the things they feel may have gone wrong. Instead, try asking, “What was the best part of your day?” or “Is there anything challenging happening to you that I can help with?” Again, prepare yourself to remain calm and really listen to what they have to say. 

While your teenager trusts you with lots of aspects of their life, building that trust in communication will take time, so be patient!

Lay out some boundaries

Your teenager is at a place in their lives where they’re naturally going to want more independence. However, as a parent, you also want to make sure their health and well-being is a top priority. That’s why it’s important to sit them down and lay out some boundaries as soon as possible.

As an example:

“We’re happy for you to go and visit your friends after your homework is done, but you must keep your location live at all times, and you must be home on time”

Approaching situations where both parties have to give and take will help teach your teenager self-discipline and respect for other people’s boundaries. These skills will help them in their adult life as well.

Setting boundaries will also mean respecting their privacy as well. Yes, you need to stay informed in their lives to make sure they’re not making any bad decisions, but at the same time, they also need to learn how to make those decisions.

It might take some adjusting and patience, but over time you will find that balance and find that they respect your wishes when you give them that little bit more space.

Support their mental health

More and more teenagers are experiencing mental health challenges like depression and anxiety these days. A large part of that is their exposure to the online world. Not so long ago, you couldn’t speak to your friends until you were back at school. Nowadays, you can speak to complete strangers! Make sure you’re monitoring their social media use, especially if they are joining in with trends on platforms like TikTok, as this can have a negative effect on their mental health.

It’s not just social media that causes feelings of anxiety and depression in teenagers. They might be experiencing bullying at school, a drop in their grades, or even peer pressure to do things they’re not comfortable doing. If you notice a change in their behavior or they tell you they’re struggling with their mental health, it’s time to take action ASAP. Remember to be open-minded when talking about mental health, and never hesitate to get professional help. The sooner action is taken, the sooner your teen can recover.

Teach them about peer pressure

Speaking of peer pressure, it’s something that every teen goes through at some point or another. As a parent, it’s important to teach your teen early on how to find the strength to say no to something they don’t want to do. Don’t be afraid to talk about certain scenarios that they might find themselves in like trying a cigarette, underage drinking, sex, or even drugs. Your teenager might even have experienced some peer pressure that they want to talk to you about.

Your teenager might even find it helpful to rehearse their responses for certain situations. Sometimes knowing exactly what to say will make it easier for them to say no and escape the situation. Remember, if your teen calls you to go and collect them after getting out of a situation like this, it’s important to praise them for not succumbing to peer pressure. This will give them the confidence to do it if needed in the future.

Recognise when they need extra support

Unfortunately, some teenagers don’t get the support they need right from the start, and this can lead to them ending up in a youth detention center. And, if that’s happened to your teen, it doesn’t mean you can’t help them turn things around!

However, in these detention centers, your teenager might experience awful things like physical and sexual abuse. If you suspect (or know) your teenager has been a victim of something like this, it’s time to take action.

Your best bet is to start by speaking to a sexual abuse lawyer for youth detention centers as soon as possible. They can help pursue legal action, get monetary compensation for suffering, and offer you and your teen guidance to get through this difficult time.

Now is also the time to get some medical advice for your teenager too. A Doctor will be able to recommend therapy sessions and check your teen for any physical damage to help them begin the healing process. It’s awful to think about, but it’s also something to make sure you’re wary of.

Encourage them to explore new activities

Teenagers often lack self-confidence, especially when they see others online that look and act differently from the way they do. That’s why it’s important to encourage them to find activities they enjoy and thrive at. When this happens, their self-confidence levels rise, and your teen will find it much easier to navigate each day.

Whether it’s joining a local team or joining a music club to play their favorite instrument, that feeling of accomplishment will help boost their spirits! Make sure you’re there to celebrate their hard work!

Find trusted adults (aside from their parents)

Finally, as much as it might hurt, sometimes teenagers find it easier to talk to adults who aren’t their parents. Make sure you encourage your teenager to talk to other trusted adults like teachers, other members of your family, or even a close family friend. This will allow you to rest assured that even if they don’t come to you for advice, they will be given advice from someone you know will have their best interests at heart.

Not only that, the larger the circle of support around your teenager, the better. It’s good for their mental well-being to know that in all walks of life, there is an adult that they can lean on if they’re in trouble, scared, or even want to share some great news with.

Raising teens can be a challenge for anyone but with a little guidance and love, you can help your teen overcome and navigate through their challenging years.

1. Understand the Benefits and Drawbacks of LLC Formation:

Limited Liability Companies (LLCs), are an increasingly popular form of business organization for small businesses in the US. LLCs offer their owners many benefits, such as pass-through taxation and protection against personal liability for business debts; however, there may also be certain downsides associated with creating an LLC compared to other forms of entity formation and maintenance costs.

2. Choose Your Company Name Carefully:

As part of creating an LLC, the first step should be selecting an appropriate name that fulfills state filing requirements. You should check its availability with most Secretary of State websites through their online search tools; additionally, trademarking it could further protect it.

3. Establish Your Current Formation State:

An important consideration when forming an LLC is selecting the state in which to establish it. When making this choice, keep costs and ease of formation, taxes, and business laws into account when choosing your location of formation. Furthermore, conducting business across more than one state will require registration for foreign qualifications with those states as well.

Be Strict When Decluttering 

The first order of business is to clear the clutter. Nothing is more annoying than having to unpack a bunch of stuff you no longer need after spending a lot of time and money getting it ready to move.

My Little Stationery Business Is Getting Some New Goodies

Happy Thursday Fam. I hope everyone is having a wonderful day and a fabulous week. Today I wanted to share with all of you some new goodies I have coming out in the next few weeks. Most of the products are on it’s way to me already and I just couldn’t contain the excitement so I wanted to share them with you.

So, what’s coming?

Each of these collections (these are just two that I am sharing, sneak peeks for the others will come at a later date) were created using inspiration from my home, Hawai’i. The artwork is illustrated by me as well as the design and layout for each. I’m proud of these collections and of the art, I did for each one. This truly gives me an opportunity to share a bit of my passion with the world again and I’m so excited to take you along for the ride.

The ‘Ohia Lehua Collection

First, I have for you the ‘Ohia Lehua Collection. This collection features the ‘ohia lehua tree and blossom. The Hawaiian Legend of the ‘Ohia Lehua and the flower has always been a favorite of mine.

This collection will include:

  • a softcover/paperback Notebook (size: 5.06″ x 7.91″)
  • a double-sided bookmark (size 2″x6″ with the legend of ‘Ohia Lehua on the back)
  • one roll of foiled washi tape (15mm in width x 10 meters long)
  • one post-it sticky note pad (3″x3″ square, 25 sheets)

The collection will retail for $23.00 or you can purchase each individual item from the collection separately. However, if you purchase the collection, you will also receive a 4×6 sticker sheet featuring the designs (not pictured). The Naupaka Collection

The second collection which I haven’t yet revealed on social media yet (so you get the first glimpse) is the Naupaka Collection. The Naupaka flower also has a beautiful story (legend) told for generations throughout the Hawaiian islands. I grew up hearing about it first from my Grandma Young and it has been a part of my heart ever since.

There are two distinct Naupaka in this collection, the Naupaka Kahakai (found near the ocean and coastline) and the Naupaka Kuahiwi (found near or on the mountain). Each plant has tiny flowers that look like they are half of a flower. There is an interesting story/legend behind the reason for it. I wanted this to be a stationery set, because I’m a stationery lover, and putting my illustrations onto paper is so fun.

This collection will include:

I have many more collections coming out, but currently just two more in production. If you’ve ever had to get your own custom washi tape printed, you may know that it’s quite a process, but more so large quantities of each print need to be purchased each time, so I wanted to be very selective with the designs I had printed.

I’m so excited to share these with you and I am proud of the work that I’ve created. Many don’t know this, but I’ve had my artwork in a local art gallery here on the island of Maui years before, so it’s really fun for me to do this again. What’s so cool is I remember having to really do most of the printing and cutting myself and I love that there are ways to get them professionally done now. The ease of finding a printer, while can still be a challenge, is much more feasible to us now than it was before.

The first product I tried from Airelle is the Intense Hydrating Repair Complex. Many know that I suffer from extremely dry and sensitive skin, so the words repair and hydrate really excited me about this product. More than just a moisturizing serum or cream, the Intense Hydrating Repair Complex is a 2-in-1. It is light-weight and antioxidant infused for optimal benefit. Designed to be a hydrating and anti-aging serum in one. Containing Airelle’s powerhouse ingredient – Berrimatrix, to help improve fine lines and wrinkles as well as overall hydration.

What does the Airelle Intense Repair Hydrator do?

When using the Hydrator, a very little of this product goes a long way and the texture of this product is unlike any I have used before. This is so much more than a moisturizer and serum, it’s creamy gold in a bottle. This is a light-weight product and you will notice a difference after the first use. Immediately after applying the product, my skin felt smooth, soft and quenched with moisture. My skin felt moisturized but also, kind of tight (in all the good ways). I forget I have anything on when I’m using it and my skin is so unbelievably soft – like, baby soft.

Airelle Age Defying Eye + Lip Treatment

In addition to the Hydrator, I also had the awesome opportunity to try the Airelle Age Defying Eye + Lip Treatment. The Eye + Lip Treatment was formulated to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes and lips. It targets dark under-eye circles, crow’s feet and wrinkles around the eye area. It helps to decrease forehead frown lines. And, for lips it helps to diminish upper lip wrinkles and smile lines.

  • Diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes
  • Diminishes the upper lip lines, smile and frown lines

While I’ve only used this product a few months, I’m absolutely smitten by its results. This product has been such a go-to to hydrate those areas while diminishing the wrinkles I have been starting to develop. Since this product is in roller-ball form, it’s easy to apply and not sticky at all. Within a month I noticed a dramatic difference in how my skin looked and felt. Easy application and firmness in all the right places. Not to mention, my puffy eyes I get from allergy season have been at bay thanks to this roller.

Both products have provided me with much more moisturized skin, which is a huge benefit for me. In the image above, I have not edited, added a filter or blurred my face. You can still see the texture as well as my freckles and some acne scarring. However, my fine lines and wrinkles have definitely decreased (quite dramatically, I might add) and my skin looks fresh and hydrated.

My Final Thoughts

Airelle products are quite costly, considering the amount of product in each. I have tried many luxurious products in the past, but these really do provide you with great results. I’m going to have to work a few extra jobs to keep up with purchasing their products for use, but I am absolutely loving them. Both products feel so great on my skin and I have found that a little goes a long way for each of them, which is a huge benefit considering the price point. Honestly, I don’t think my skin has looked this good in a long time, especially considering the brutal weather and change in diet it has gone through. I still can’t get over how awesome my skin looks and feels and I attribute it to the combination of these products and others I currently have in rotation.
