Happy New Year fam! It seems like I haven’t written here in like forever and I still can’t get over the fact that it’s 2019. I’m excited about the new year and the changes I know are to come and the path I’m hoping to take this year. I used to share these types of posts with my readers pretty often over the years, but in the last few years I’ve slacked. So, I figured a new year, means I can try again, right? I started the new year pretty nicely, simple and effortless. As I finally find the time to log into my blog, I am also starting the new year with a new post on my birthday. Can you believe it, I’m 39 today. Anyway, I wanted to share my word of the year for 2019 and without further adieu, my word of the year for 2019 is…

word of the year 2019, word, 2019, new year, balance, lifestyle blogger, love, word of the year, 2019

BALANCE

Yup – you read that correctly. My word of the year for 2019 is balance. Last year, Inspire was my word and I thought I did a pretty good job at incorporating it into the year. But, I realized that I really needed to improve how I balance my life. Now, let me elaborate on this a bit. I struggled with finding the perfect balance between home life, workouts and getting healthier and my Blog, YouTube and Podcast, spending enough time outdoors enjoying life and just everything in general. I’m sure everyone has those times when you just can’t balance the fine line between your various life occurrences, right? But for me… I struggled with being able to do more than one at the same time, or focusing on just one thing. While I never really had that problem before, but it seemed like last year literally took the cherry on the pie and left me with the crust. I knew I needed to become a healthier me, so I took that time to focus on that and many things fell through the cracks. Once I started improving on my health, I focused on my family and having adventures and forgot about everything else. It seemed as if I couldn’t find the proper balance to tackle each task and part of life seamlessly.

CREATING BALANCE – HOW I PLAN TO ACCOMPLISH THIS

There’s so much for me to look forward to in 2019 and while I don’t do the whole “resolutions” thing, I definitely create a vision board to keep me on track with goals I’d like to accomplish for the year. I need to take the time to not only work on myself and my family life, but also create a life I continue to love. Here are a few things I’d like to focus on for this year to help create balance in my life:

  • Finding Balance in being healthy. Continuing to improve my health is very important to me. I’ve tried to make it a lifestyle change and my goal is to continue to work towards improvement while incorporating the tools I need to be successful. Remember that everyone’s health is different and so are everyone’s ideas about how to look after it. If you need some extra assistance, such as getting cosmetic dermatology, you don’t be shy in asking for it.
  • Finding Balance in making time for myself and the things I enjoy and love to do. Whether that means finding time for a manicure or going for a walk – I must find time to spend on myself. Self-love is not just a hashtag, it’s an important part of what we need to do for ourselves.
  • Working on balance in work life – creating equal amounts of content for my blog, YouTube, Podcast and social media. Create the best content for engagement and really incorporate ideas from my viewers and readers. I want to be able to have a schedule that will allow me to post a minimum of once a week and create content that everyone will enjoy. Most importantly, content that I’m proud of.
  • Balance in my marriage. Important – plan for date nights with Kev and I. This may seem like such a small task, but I feel like we truly need to get out more together – just he and I. Date nights are definitely essential for any couple. After having children, it seems like we have been very focused on the boys and I must be able to have balance in life to spend time with Kev and really build our relationship again.
  • Balance in a schedule. This one – heck it’s not gonna be easy. I push so many tasks on the side to work a schedule that I think it essential. But I’m struggling to really get everything done. I need to be able to really use my calendar and various planners to keep organized with a good schedule so I can accomplish everything I need to and want to do.
  • Balance in food. I realized a lot about my eating habits in the last year. I am totally addicted to sugar. But if I can work through some of that as I have been doing and still be able to satisfy my cravings, I think I will be successful this year.
  • Balance in adventures. This may seem like an odd one, but I feel like I go through bouts of adventures and then a dry spell for a really long time. If I incorporate at least one type of adventure a week or a few each month, I’m not feeling like I missed out on so much or spent too much time playing instead of accomplishing important tasks.

There is obviously so much more I want to be able to focus my balance and time on. I have a lot of things I’d love to be able to accomplish this year and I’m optimistic that I will get it done.

New Year – Same Honey, Just Improved

I really started 2019 off on a good note (even if I’m just writing my first post for the year and it’s already 14 days in lol. I’m excited for all the adventures and the memories I’ll be making and creating this year. But, I truly want to make 2019 a year of balancing all of my tasks and daily life, while creating memories and working on myself. I look forward to looking back at this year and all the changes and accomplishments I’ve been able to make.

Do you have a Word of the Year?

So, tell me… do you have a word of the year? Any resolutions or goals you want to accomplish for 2019. I’d love to know all about it, so be sure to leave me a comment below and let me know.

Hair Care for your Fur Baby – Isle of the Dogs CocoClean Natural Xtra Clean Shampoo and Detangling Conditioner:  I know this may not be a traditional product to list in a gift guide.  But, I didn’t say this guide was specifically just for humans.  If you put presents under the tree for your fur baby like we do, I think these products would be a great hit.  Ikaika is our King Charles Cavalier Spaniel and he is part of our family.  He is not a fan of taking a bath, but absolutely loves CocoClean products.  First of all – these products smell great so we as a family enjoy them and second, these products leave Ikaika’s coat feeling so soft and manageable.  Since Ikaika has long hair, it’s important that we keep his tangles at bay and these products not only keep him smelling great, but leave his hair so soft which makes brushing a breeze.  If you are looking for something new to gift your furry friend this holiday – I definitely suggest checking out this line, it’s awesome.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t think that I would write about these, but since I already filmed the video review and it’s been sitting in my Que for release for a few weeks now, I figured that I would write one anyway.  My opinions haven’t changed since first trying these lippies and I doubt that they will.  Let’s get on with it – shall we?  Today I’m talking to you about the Wet n Wild Color Icon Metallic Liquid Lipsticks from the Limited Edition Lost in the Wild Flowers collection.

The Wet n Wild Color Icon Metallic Liquid Lipsticks from the Lost in the Wild Flowers collection showed up in my local Walgreens about a month (or more) ago and I found four shades available.  The display was quite picked through so I’m not quite sure if there are more colors available, but I picked up what my Walgreens had and I was really excited to get my hands on them.  Retailing for just $3.99 these metallic liquid lipsticks were a part of a limited edition collection that included nail polishes and some blush and highlighters (or that is what I seen in the display) and I decided I would only pick up the lipsticks.

Now this new craze of metallic liquid lipsticks seem to be hitting quite a few companies and brands as they are being released all over the internet and you may have already seen different brands like Kylie Jenner and Milani – even ColourPop recently released a set of them.  I was quite excited to try one that was affordable.  After bringing the four shades home with me, I immediately began to swatch each one.

The packaging is adorable and I love how small it is while still packing in a good amount of product.  The doe foot applicator is also quite nice.  It has a slight dip in the applicator allowing you to apply the product to your lips easily and ensuring the product hugs your lips to create shape.  It reminds me of the Jordana Sweet Cream liquid lipstick applicator which I talk about in this post here.  The only difference is that the one from Wet n Wild, the applicator is a little more on the fluffier side, but it still makes applying the product a breeze.

Left to Right: Peony Express, Indigo Your Own Way, Chrysanthemum’s the Word, Coming Up Roses

If you are looking for a lip product that is much like a gloss, you may like this particular lippy.  This reminds me of a glittery gloss with a similar texture.  It’s kind of odd to me to be honest and applying it on my lips – while the colors are pigmented, it looked weird and felt uncomfortable.  This is not a liquid lipstick texture I would prefer.  It reminds me of a gel like lip gloss formula with shimmer and metallic flecks.

Left to Right, Top to Bottom: Peony Express, Chrysanthemum’s the Word, Indigo Your Own Way, Coming Up Roses

Longevity… I couldn’t say that these lasted AT ALL.  They kiss off very easily and drinking or eating anything really left a mess behind.  While they do have nice pigment and color, I hate that when I wipe it off my lips, it leaves that metallic shimmer behind which settles into the fine lines and cracks in my lips.  It’s unattractive and really emphasizes all those lines on my lips whether at it’s full pigmentation or faded.  I also haven’t seen any other colors available in this line and while I’m not a fan, maybe a different color selection would make for a different opinion.  All of the shades have a blue base to them, which is not my favorite to wear – especially if they have a shimmer or metallic look to them.

Since they are so affordable, I think they would definitely be a great topper for a matte lipstick or something fun to wear.  They oddly remind me of my childhood – which by the way, I am a child of the 80s and a teen of the 90s, so that says a lot about the shade range and finish.  While I was able to apply the lip products and get color from them, there is a lot of streaky color application and sometimes I felt like I was applying more and more but rubbing off color at the same time.  While these are cheap, unless you have something fun planned for them – I don’t think they would be used well for every day or even special occasions.  I have had MANY Wet n Wild lippies over the years and these definitely made the “eh” list because I have them so I’ll try to make use of them, but I’m not a fan and don’t think I will be.  If I had to absolutely choose one out of the whole bunch, I think “Coming Up Roses” – the darkest shade in the bunch, would probably be my favorite – though, I wouldn’t exactly use the word “favorite”.  One I know I would be able to make use of is the purple shade – Indigo Your Own Way.  When it comes to the metallic part in that particular lipstick, it lends for the glitter to be more wearable then the rest.

metallic liquid lipsticks, liquid lipsticks, lipsticks, wet n wild, wet n wild color icon metallic liquid lipsticks, metallic liquid lipsticks, wet n wild, lost in the wild flowers, swatches, beauty, makeup, lips, limited edition collection,

In the packaging, these look like absolutely beautiful colors and I think they are… but for me personally, I think they just were not the right fit.  At under $4.00 each – the price point is nice and I’m sure I’ll figure out a way to make use of them.  Have you tried these yet and if so, what are your thoughts?  If you haven’t, do you think you’ll be checking any of these out.

I have always been a fan of Wet n Wild and I’m really enjoying their new releases I’ve seen hitting the stores lately, but this particular set I think could use some improvements.  Texture, longevity and overall formulation could use some changes and are certainly to be desired.  While this is my opinion of these liquid lipsticks from Wet n Wild, that doesn’t change my general opinion of the brand, and I do still enjoy what WnW offers.

When it comes to skin care and the tools I use, I’m kind of a snob.  I have used various different tools from all kinds of brands and while some worked for me, not all of them were “holy grail” products.  Over the years, I have talked about the Michael Todd Soniclear and how this unit has made a difference in my skin cleansing and today I share with you a fun new print and some details on another one.  Used in combination with my Luna, the Soniclear is a unit I absolutely love and enjoy and if you haven’t tried it already – I highly suggest you check it out.

Michael Todd Soniclear Petite English Garden - Facial Cleansing Brush

Today I’m going to chit chat with you about the on-the-go companion… the Michael Todd Soniclear Petite.  I have the one in English Garden (as well as the Melon) and like the other units I own, I find that I get just as much use out of this one.  What makes this one so fun and unique is that it is a little smaller than the standard size or the Elite but has all the greatness we know and love from those particular sizes in a compact size perfect for travel.  Retailing for $89 on Amazon, the Soniclear Petite comes with the Waterproof Rechargeable Sonic Control Handle, 1 USB charger (perfect for travel or charging on the go) which magnetically attaches to the handle, 1 charging/storage cradle, 1 antimicrobial Face brush attachment.  The Separate wall plug is not included – but I use my existing phone plugs to use the USB charger.

So what makes the Soniclear Petite so awesome?

The Soniclear Petite is a Sonic Powered Facial Cleansing Brush System.  It is sonic powered and has antimicrobial technology that helps to guard against bacteria formation on your brush heads.  This awesome technology makes it the best and most ideal cleansing brush for any skin type or concern.  Each individual brush bristle is buffed at the time of manufacture to prevent scratching or irritation on the skin.  You get three speed settings which allow you to fully customize the cleansing experience to fit your needs and skin concerns and the unit is full water-resistant and submersible.  What I love is the the Soniclear Petite is the perfect travel companion, allowing you to recharge your “rechargeable” battery giving you two hours of battery life per charge.  And, the Soniclear Petite is available in a variety of different colors and patterns to suit your personality.

Each Soniclear also includes a cleansing timer, that helps to standardize your cleansing experience for daily cleaning and exfoliation.  This is essential so that you are not concentrating the unit in one area for too long at any given time.  The timer will go off and beep letting you know to move on to the next spot on your face.  If you have sensitive skin like me, you may want to start off using this unit just a few times a week as I cannot use this product every day due to my skin sensitivities.

As I have mentioned before, Soniclear has an Antimicrobial Face Brush Head which means that it has a built-in antimicrobial product protection.  The bristle tips are perfectly buffed to prevent scratching and irritation and the brush head only needs to be replaced every six months.  The costs for the replacement head is reasonably priced too, $25.00 – $30 to replace your brush head every six months is a reasonably priced investment considering the results you get with this brush.

With a plethora of different attachments for your unit, the Soniclear Petite or full sized Soniclear is a great tool to have.  I highly suggest checking it out and seeing the difference.  If you have used Clarisonic before and have had issues with skin sensitivities, try the Soniclear.  I have had difficulties with the Clarisonic before and found that while I can’t use the Soniclear everyday, I definitely get great use out of the unit without having issues with my skin.  I love it and use it several times a week as a part of my skin care routine.  This product has been such a great addition to my skin cleansing, I have purchased several and have even given them away as gifts to friends and family.  It’s a tool I highly suggest and I know that if you try it, you will enjoy it too.

You can purchase your Soniclear Petite from Michael Todd on Amazon here and via their website here.

How about you, have you tried the Soniclear Petite or Elite before?  If so, what are your thoughts on it?

With Spring in full swing and Summer right around the bend, I’ve already started making easy and quick recipes for my family that are refreshing and delicious.  A favorite in our house is my easy no bake strawberry shortcake.  I’ll be honest, for years I had thought that I was the genius behind this recipe, but I found out over the years that I’m not the only one who does similar, so I can’t take all the credit for this.

This delicious recipe is the perfect quick treat for Spring and Summer because it tastes refreshing and is perfect for a warm or humid day.  It’s easy to make and I love to get the kids involved in creating it.  This recipe displays great in a trifle bowl, so if you are looking to host a party or bring it as a dish, definitely look into a trifle bowl for presentation and WOW your friends and family.  But since I wanted to make a treat for the boys, I opted for a half pan and it was ready for them to devour.  So, without further adieu, let’s make this scrumptious delicious yummy treat.

Check out the video tutorial (walk-through) embedded below or click here to watch directly on YouTube.  A full list of ingredients are listed below.

Easy no bake strawberry shortcake

Step by Step walk through video

Supplies needed:

  • 1 1/2 – 2 loaves Sara Lee Pound Cake
  • 16 oz ripe strawberries (approximately 16-18 medium/large strawberries)
  • 2 8oz. containers Cool Whip (it is up to you if you want Original, Lite or Fat Free)
  • 2 tbl spoons Granulated sugar (more or less depending on your preference)
  • 1 half pan foil pan (11 3/4 x 9 3/8 in) or 2 standard size trifle bowls

YIELD:  This recipe will yield one half pan (foil pan 11 3/4 x 9 3/8 in) or two standard size trifle bowls.  This will feed approximately 12-15 people depending on the size of the serving.

PREP TIME and COOK TIME:  This is a no-bake recipe and the prep is the time for assembling the dish as well.  With slicing the strawberries as well as cutting up the pound cake and then assembly, you are looking at about 15-20 minutes total.

Directions:

  1. Cut up your pound cake into bite size pieces.
  2. Wash strawberries.  Remove stem and slice into your desired size.
  3. In a bowl, add sliced strawberries and sugar and mix well until all berries are macerated and each berry is coated.  (The berries will look a little darker in shade and you will notice more strawberry juice in the bowl)
  4. Stir up and mix your cool whip in it’s container so that it is smooth and blended.  Do not over blend – the reason behind mixing is to make sure it is smooth and not frozen in the middle (if you are using a frozen whipped topping).
  5. Lay each ingredient in your pan or trifle bowl.  Starting with the pound cake – add your bite size pieces to the bottom layer.  Next, add your strawberries – each ingredient does not have to completely fill the layer as it will all come together in the end.  Finally, the cool whip – spread the cool whip onto the strawberries until smooth and even.
  6. Repeat each step of layering the ingredients till you reach the top of your bowl or pan.  Make sure to leave a small amount of sliced strawberries on the side so you can top your creation for decoration.  The strawberries on top will also be part of the presentation so those you are feeding know that it is some form of strawberry cake.
  7. Serve & Enjoy!

This particular strawberry shortcake is perfect for little eaters like children and displays beautifully in a trifle bowl.  It really is more like a trifle type and is so quick to assemble and make, it’s great for those last minute dishes you need to make for a party.

I hope you enjoyed this quick recipe for today’s Foodie Friday.  If you try it, comment below and let me know or if you snap a photo – be sure to use hashtag #honeygirlsworld so I can check it out.  Bon Appetite.
