Your skin is a significant part of your body and can impact your overall health more than you may realize. Good skin is generally seen as a sign of youth and beauty, but it’s important for more than that. As well as being a part of your everyday beauty routine, taking care of your skin is also a lifestyle choice that can improve your general health and well-being.

However, a skin condition can make your skin harder to deal with. This can impact your self-esteem, but it can also affect your health or be a sign of an underlying condition. Here are some common skin conditions and how you can treat them.

General Skincare Advice

No matter what your skin situation is, everyone could use general advice and a good skincare routine. If you have a healthy routine to start with, then you might be able to clear up some minor skin conditions without having to take any special care. A good skincare routine can also hold off the aging process and keep your skin looking clear and youthful for longer.

The first thing you need to do is find out what type of skin you have. Everyone is unique, and that means that everyone’s skin is different as well. However, you can categorize your skin into four basic skin types. These are:

  • Normal skin, which is the ideal balanced skin type.
  • Dry skin, where you don’t produce enough sebum (skin oil), which can make your skin look dull or dry.
  • Oily skin, where you produce too much sebum, which can make your skin look greasy or shiny.
  • Combination skin, where you have patches of both dry and oily skin.

If your skin is unbalanced, then it can make it less healthy. Once you know your skin type, then you can change your products and skincare routine to accommodate it.

Cleansing & Moisturizing

Everyone should at least use a cleanser and moisturizer twice a day (morning and night, preferably), but your skin type might change this. For example, someone with dry skin would benefit from moisturizing more often to keep their skin hydrated and healthy.

If you have sensitive skin, then use products designed to be kind to your skin. Ideally, even if it doesn’t irritate your skin, avoid using harsh chemicals on your skin as they can dry it out. This includes makeup, which can do more harm than good.

Consider the food that you eat as well. Some foods contain nutrients that boost your skin health and healthy fats. You should drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated and your skin looking supple and healthy, rather than drying out.

Finally, you should always see a doctor or dermatologist if you’re worried about a skin condition. They can give you targeted advice and medication. Also, changes in your skin can indicate health conditions. For example, a mole that changes color, size, or texture, can be a sign of skin cancer. Getting it looked at and treated sooner rather than later is always better.

Treating Eczema

One of the most common skin conditions out there is eczema. Eczema is characterized by dry, irritated skin. It can range from dry patches that can be easily treated with a basic moisturizer, to a far more severe issue with painfully cracked and inflamed skin. More serious eczema flare-ups can lead to infections as the skin breaks, either due to scratching or cracks.

Eczema can also damage your self-esteem, as it can look unsightly as well as uncomfortable. Facial eczema, for example, can be very difficult to deal with. The skin on your face, particularly around your eyes is sensitive, and it’s impossible to hide a flare-up on your face.

The most common cause of a flare-up is exposure to an irritant. This might be perfume, makeup, or anything else that comes in contact with your skin. Even some moisturizers can irritate your skin if you’re sensitive to some of the ingredients. Pay attention to what irritates your skin and avoid it as much as possible.

Harsh & Cold Air Make It Worst

Cold air and harsh conditions can dry out anyone’s skin and can be especially bad if you have eczema. Protect your skin in the winter, keeping it warm and dry. Another common cause of an eczema flare-up is stress.

If your skin is flaring up and you don’t know why you may be anxious or stressed. See if you can change your lifestyle and, if necessary, speak to a therapist. If your eczema isn’t calming down with home treatments, then visit your doctor or dermatologist.

Acne

Acne is one of those skin conditions that’s seen as an ordinary part of life. For many people, it is. You get spots as a teenager then, as you get older, you outgrow them for the most part, other than the odd one every now and then. Acne, like eczema, can often be treated using over-the-counter treatments.

However, some people have to deal with acne for far longer, or they have very severe acne that doesn’t go away no matter what they do. This can be damaging to your self-esteem, as well as being uncomfortable, and it can even be a sign of an underlying issue.

While it’s tempting to wash your face repeatedly, this can do more harm than good. Use a mild cleaner and wash your skin about twice a day, for best results. Use water-based cosmetics and skincare products. Avoid a lot of makeup as, while heavy foundation can cover acne to a degree, it often makes the problem worse in the long run. Remove what makeup you wear before bed.

If your acne still won’t come under control, then you should see a doctor or a dermatologist. They will give you medication to deal with the acne, although it can take a few months to work. Women can have acne flare-ups when they undergo hormonal changes, such as when the menstrual cycle.

It can take a while to get your skin to where you want it, but it’s worth the effort to feel comfortable and confident in your own body.

You Are Not Alone

Regardless of age or skin type – anyone can experience various types of skin conditions. If you’ve been on this site a while, you know that I suffer from Eczema. But, how we treat our skin, care for it and the environment we live in are all contributing factors. My hope is that this post helps you a bit if you are experiencing any of these.

Have you heard of Mukama Botanica? I love trying products that come from businesses here in Hawaii and I’m excited to share this brand with you. If you’ve been a long time follower of this blog, you may have seen a variety of skincare products from brands that were started right here in the islands. Today, I’m ecstatic to share with you this new to me company – Mukama Botanica. And, their High Vibe Face Mist.

High Vibe Face Mist

I’m all about a great face mist, especially when it has ingredients that will help to heal and balance out my sensitive skin. This face mist has become my go-to in my skincare regimen over the last few weeks. I love its lightweight feel on my face and fresh scent. If you are a lover of rose tonics or rose water but don’t like the strong fragrance that it can have, this is the mist for you. Lightly scented and perfect for year-round. I’ve been using it daily to combat my dry skin. It has also been a savior to help me feel pampered while going through this pandemic lockdown. I tend to gravitate towards products that are lightweight and this mist is IT!

Did I mention how gorgeous the packaging is? Totally luxurious and such a pretty addition to any vanity.

High Vibe Face Mist retails for $55.00 (4.05 fl oz / 120 mL) and is a facial mist that boosts your skin and mood. This mist is a pH-balanced potion that is formulated with high vibe ingredients and aromatics inspired by sacred Hawaiian plant healing. I love that it is perfect for all skin types and my sensitive skin LOVED this product. It’s created with 100% natural and organic ingredients and handmade in the USA.

Using the High Vibe Face Mist is as easy as pressing the spray button. Simply mist your face a few times after cleansing and rub the product into the skin prior to using your moisturizer. You can also use it as a refresher during the day. You want to make sure that you shake the bottle before using it and store it at room temperature. Keep it out of direct sunlight.

Is it worth the price?

I know what you’re thinking… and I know you’re going to ask me this question, so I figured I’d answer it for you. At the $55 cost, is this facial mist worth the price tag? Well, I’ve been using this mist daily for about a month now and using it generously I might add. I still have most of the bottle left considering how much I’ve utilized so far. The mist is fine so it will cover a broad area. That’s what I like about it. I think this mist will last quite a while even with daily use. Considering there are so many luxury skincare products on the market today – yes, I think this is definitely worth the price tag. You are not just getting a product, but a mission and key ingredients that are so beneficial to your skin.

Mukama Botanica’s two best-selling products include their multi-purpose Skin Superfood Serum (which I can’t wait to get my hands on) and their High Vibe Face Mist (pH-balanced toner/face mist). Their Skin Superfood Serum is packed with rich antioxidants and vitamin C from guava (one of my favorite fruits). Both products have been covered in the January, February and March 2020 issues of Vogue.

Overall – I’m definitely impressed and loving my Mukama Botanic High Vibe Face Mist. It has been the one product in my skincare regimen over the last month that I’ve used consistently. Being on lock-down due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, I’m constantly wanting some consistency in my life. This facial mist has been my place of zen for pampering during a time when it’s not really feasible. It’s rare for me to say “Go out and pick one up for yourself…” but in this instance, I say – “Do It!”

Recently I shared with all of you my thoughts on a skincare line that is based here in Hawaii.  I mentioned that they were soon to be releasing a new Natural, Reef-Safe Sunscreen.  Today, I’m excited to give you the details on this new launch.  Read the Press Release below.

A Sunscreen Formula Free of Oxybenzone and Octinoxate

Maui, Hawaiʻ– (September 18, 2018) – Kuleana®, a new skincare line created in Hawaiʻi, adds a natural sunscreen to its product offerings to protect consumers and coral reefs while supporting environmental nonprofits in Hawaiʻi. Kuleana® Sunscreen is made from plant-based oils, minerals, and other reef-safe natural ingredients and does not contain ecologically harmful chemicals such as oxybenzone and octinoxate – two chemicals known to be toxic to corals and other marine life and recently banned by Hawaiʻi’s new sunscreen law. In addition to its environmentally friendly formulation, Kuleana Sunscreen aims to support environmental organizations in the state through its membership in 1% for the Planet, a global organization that connects dollars and doers to accelerate smart environmental giving.

“We are proud to offer consumers another natural product that aligns with our state’s environmental goals to protect and preserve fragile marine ecosystems, including coral reefs,” said Joy Galatro, marketing director at Maui-based Pacific Biodiesel, Hawaiʻi’s pioneering renewable energy company and parent company of Kuleana. “Practicing sustainability and protecting the environment are central to our company’s mission. With this product, we’re able to offer an earth-friendly and effective sunscreen choice for consumers while giving back to local nonprofits that are doing important work for our environment. We believe this is our responsibility, our kuleana.”

Formulated, tested and produced in an FDA-compliant facility, Kuleana Sunscreen offers broad-spectrum UVA/UVB SPF 30 protection, remains water resistant for 80 minutes, and works well with all skin types. It contains a sheer, non-whitening zinc oxide that rubs in clear, allowing for application with or without makeup and ideal for daily use with other Kuleana skincare products. The product contains an innovative “clear” zinc oxide which leaves no detectable nanoparticles in the final product. Because they are porous, the zinc clusters appear clear on the skin, eliminating the undesirable “whitening” appearance common with most non-nano zinc sunscreens.

Vegan, cruelty-free, and without synthetic fragrances or colors, Kuleana Sunscreen is formulated with macadamia nut oil and sunflower oil made from locally grown ingredients and produced by Pacific Biodiesel, which last year began farming sunflowers in Maui’s central valley. Other natural ingredients include aloe extract, jojoba oil, shea butter, coconut oil, and pineapple fruit extract – all skin-nourishing ingredients.

Through its new 1% for the Planet membership, Kuleana Sunscreen will support the Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi beginning September 2018, in honor of the chapter’s 50th anniversary. The Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi actively works throughout the islands to stop climate change, ensure climate justice for all, and protect Hawaiʻi’s unique natural resources. Additionally, when individuals volunteer with the Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi in the next year, Kuleana will provide an exclusive 50% discount on its sunscreen product purchased from the company’s website at KuleanaSunscreen.com.

“The Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi focuses on priorities that reflect our company’s cutting-edge values: clean energy, climate change, food and water security, and sustainability,” Galatro added. “Supporting their statewide efforts reinforces the importance of a “mauka to makai” focus in protecting Hawaiʻi’s reefs – because harmful waste and pollutants on the land can eventually flow down into the ocean and negatively affect our fragile marine ecosystems.”

“We are grateful and honored to have the support of Kuleana,” said Marti Townsend, Director for the Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi. “Guided by a genuine commitment to our planet and fueled by cutting-edge science, Kuleana is making it easier for all of us to do what we love with less impact on the natural resources around us.”

Kuleana Sunscreen is available in 3-ounce tubes and retails for $18. In response to demand, the company is also offering the sunscreen in bulk sizes for its resort and tourism-related customers. The product will be available for purchase in retail locations beginning this month and is currently for sale on the company’s website. For more information, please visit kuleanabeauty.com.

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of FarmHouse Fresh and their awesome body and skin care products.  I’ve featured the brand several times here on the site and boy oh boy am I loving these two particular products, especially for summer.  Today I introduce you to the FarmHouse Fresh Vitamin Berry Facial Tonic and Three Milk Ageless Night Cream.  If you are anything like me and have dry skin year round, I think you’ll definitely want to tune into this post and read all about these beauties.

The Vitamin Berry Facial Tonic is an Instant Pore-Refining Toner.  Retailing for $36.00.  The toner comes in a 3.5 oz glass bottle and it’s a product that I’ve been absolutely loving lately.  99% natural, vegan and gluten free, this product really leaves your skin feeling and looking flawless.  I’ve been loving how my complexion is looking lately and love this product more because it is alcohol-free.  This toner smooths the skin and helps to boost moisture.  Let’s face it, with my sensitive and dry skin, I need all the moisture I can get.

This product provides vital nourishment from U.S. grown organic aronia berries which is said to be a miracle fruit with one of the highest antioxidant contents ever recorded.  It has a natural filter effect to help make pores appear as if they were never there.  It literally is a new favorite and I love how it makes my skin look and feel.  Since I don’t use foundation, this product really has helped my skin blossom the last month.

This toner delivers pristine rose water and a touch of a polyhydroxy acid to provide a light and long-term exfoliation.  The berry vitamins help to visibly reduce the look of fine lines and I love that it’s a product you can spritz for on-the-go hydration for instant refreshment whenever you need it.

I apply this product after my morning skin care routine.  I apply a mist evenly to my face and neck and when I have a little extra time, I’ll apply to a cotton pad and smooth evenly over my skin.  This product should not be rinsed.  I apply it at night when I feel I need an extra boost of hydration or if my skin is looking dull.  I also love using this to help refresh my skin and cool me down since summer has already begun here in Hawaii and it’s hot.  I love the scent of this mist.  It reminds me of a light berry scent, though my husband says that he doesn’t smell berry, he smells a light sweet fragrance.  I think the smell is a great way to jump start your day.

Now let’s chat about the Three Milk Ageless Night Cream.  Anything with the word “ageless” in its title has me absolutely amused and intrigued.  This night cream comes in a 1.7 oz glass jar and in a decorative box.  It retails for $45.00.  It is known as FarmHouse Fresh’s #1 selling face cream and boy can I agree because I think it’s wonderful.  This cream is said to literally transform your skin overnight and I’ve been loving it.  This “wonder milk” is uniquely rich and definitely hydrating.  It offers a time-release delivery system of pure form retinol.  Because so many retinol products can cause redness, irritation and dryness (I know this first hand), this product is definitely in a whole different leaque.  The slow-release system ensures it delivers softness, illumination and firmness as well as other awesome benefits, without the usual side effects that you would expect or may have experienced with pure form retinol.

I didn’t expect that this cream would not only be thick but definitely smooth.  But, you’ll be amazed at how wonderfully it blends into the skin and how well it works overnight.  In the mornings I find that my skin feels so smooth and looks bright.  After spending some time in the sun, I found that it’s been so beneficial in healing my skin and helping with my sunburn as well.  (Of course, I do not suggest putting it on any open wounds or sunburn)

This cream includes botanical milks and skin restoring peptides that is in FHF daily moisturizer plus the restorative retinol and proprietary blend of vitamin extracts, moisture boosting ingredients and a cool creamy texture.  I definitely think after the first use you’ll notice a huge difference in your skin’s texture and brightness as well as how fresh your skin looks.

A thin layer at night is all that is needed when using this product.  I apply it to my face, neck and near my crows feet (just a little) as my final step in my night-time skin care routine.  I have found over the last few weeks that it definitely has helped to hydrate my dry skin and revive my dull skin tone.  You may also notice a decrease in fine lines, wrinkles and a firmer complexion.  This product does have a fragrance, but it is light and quite nice.  I didn’t have any scent sensitivities while using this product.

If you’re interested in learning more about these products including their full list of ingredients, definitely head on over to FarmHouse Fresh’s Website.  Also, don’t forget to take a look at some of their other awesome products.  I have a bunch of my favorites listed here on my blog, so definitely do a search for FARMHOUSE FRESH and read my thoughts on some of these awesome fresh-baked goods.

Thank you FarmHouse Fresh for sharing these delights with me.  I am absolutely loving them and I know my readers will enjoy them too.

Skincare is such an individual thing for most people.  What might work for some, may not work for others and sometimes products that are expensive or affordable may offer different results for each person.  I have tried so many different skincare products over the years, that I kind of know what may be a dud for me the first few times I use it and what may turn into my holy grail of products.  Today I’m going to be sharing with all of you my thoughts on a few products I have tried from PCA Skin.  Prior to being contacted by this company, I really didn’t know much about them.  But, I’m finally able to share my thoughts with you on products I tried from my specific treatment plan.

PCA Skincare, PCA Skin, skincare, skin care, beauty, product review, acne treatment, acne, anti-aging, retinol, beauty review, skin care beauty, eczema, acne cleanser, dry skin, skincare for dry skin, normal combination skin,

Let me start off by saying that this post is very long overdue.  I have been using these products for quite a few months now but as a beauty blogger, I get so many skin care products to test, that it can take me a while to see what works and how it works in combination with favorites I already have in my beauty routine.  PCA Skin sent me 5 products to try that were specifically recommended for me since I have Eczema prone, dry skin.  I also wanted something that would help cleanse my skin since I had been struggling with acne over the last few months.  I’m going to discuss with you what products I got and how I used them all.

PCA Skincare, PCA Skin, skincare, skin care, beauty, product review, acne treatment, acne, anti-aging, retinol, beauty review, skin care beauty, eczema, acne cleanser, dry skin, skincare for dry skin, normal combination skin,

Let’s start with the treatment bars.  The Dry Skin Relief Bar (net wt 3.2 oz / 90 g – $40) was probably one of my favorite products that I had the chance to try out.  This bar is formulated to help soothe and improve dry skin concerns, including psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis.  The bar is formulated with 3% salicylic acid and antioxidants.  My skin really takes on a ton of damage during the winter months and that is usually when my Eczema likes to flare up.  I used this bar daily and loved that it had a light lather and left my skin feeling clean without stripping the moisture that my face needed to keep from drying out.  This bar can be used all over the body and even on the scalp which is perfect for dry scalp issues.  I also enjoyed the fact that it helped to calm the recurrence of itching, redness, flaking, and irritation I often get from dry skin during the winter months.

I think the packaging was a bit of a challenge to work with (even if it came with a sponge to use with it) and I would love to see this in an actual bar form so it would be easy to use, but overall, I enjoyed this product.

The Blemish Control Bar (net wt 3.2 oz / 90 g – $40) was also a favorite.  Honestly, I think the bars from PCA Skin are definitely worth checking out.  The Blemish Control Bar is a skin purifying and cleansing bar that is perfect for oily skin or those suffering/experiencing acne.  It is formulated to clear pores of oil and to soften the skin, while reducing existing acne breakouts.  It also prevents future acne breakouts with 2% salicylic acid.  With purifying ingredients like eucalyptus oil, this bar is definitely something for anyone experiencing unruly skin may enjoy.  I can’t use this bar daily, but find that it’s perfect for once a week for me and keeps my skin looking fresh while purging my skin of impurities that tend to make it’s way to the surface.  I haven’t had many breakouts since using this so I’m pretty stoked at how well it has been working for me.  If you have sensitive or dry skin, you may want to use a little of this at a time and don’t use daily.  I found that when I first started testing out the product, my skin became extremely dry for several days.  Once I figured out the best solution for using it, it has been great.

Again, like the other bar, I’d love to see the packaging switch up on these.

The Intensive Brightening Treatment was something I was a bit scared to use but I do enjoy a good retinol product.  This product is expensive considering the size of the tube (net wt 1 oz / 29.5 g – $109) and I honestly would be deterred by the price having not tried the brand before.  But, I’m so so glad that I had the opportunity to try this specific product because I immediately was hooked after the first try.  In just three days I noticed a huge difference in my skin.  The discoloration I had before had lightened so dramatically that my mom just had to get her hands on this product immediately.

This retinol night-time treatment is powerful and creates an even, bright and radiant complexion.  With pure retinol, resveratrol, and niacinamide to help promote a healthy glow while also improving discoloration, I loved the results.  The Intensive Brightening Treatment has potent, stable ingredients that are patented in an Omnisome delivery system to carry the ingredients deeper into the skin for superior results.  I have used many brightening creams in the past and I think this may be my favorite.  I’m super thankful that a little goes a long way with this thing because with that price point, I’ll be saving my coins for a while before I can replace it.  But, I have to say, it’s definitely something I’m going to repurchase.

This photo was taken today. I am not wearing any makeup and it was taken with my phone. There was no editing done to my complexion or my face, what you see is what you get.

Now, let’s talk Purifying Mask.  The PCA Purifying Mask (net wt 2.1 oz / 60 g – $58) is a mask that is developed and formulated for oily, normal and combination skin.  I was a bit worried because I have dry skin and I had hoped that it wouldn’t cause me any issues.  This purifying mask is an at-home clay-based treatment mask that exfoliates, detoxifies and removes impurities from the skin.  It leaves the skin feeling smooth and looking clear and bright.  It includes a well-balanced botanical blend of ingredients to promote clear complexion while also having the clay included to eliminate the build-up of impurities in the pores.  It gently exfoliates the build-up of surface debris, leaving your face with a smooth and clear canvas.

I have used this product the last few months and have enjoyed it, but I have to use it sparingly.  I can easily have a dry spell or dry spots on my face if I use too much of it or if I use it too often.  But, when I do use it, my skin feels so soft after and even radiant.  It is definitely a mask I enjoy, but I have to make sure I’m not overdoing it too much.  I love the way my skin feels once I remove it and how vibrant it looks, but it definitely does purify, so I have to be sure not to strip my natural moisture so much that my Eczema flares up.

PCA Skincare, PCA Skin, skincare, skin care, beauty, product review, acne treatment, acne, anti-aging, retinol, beauty review, skin care beauty, eczema, acne cleanser, dry skin, skincare for dry skin, normal combination skin,

Lastly is the Weightless Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 45 (net wt 2.1 oz / 60 g – $44).  I use SPF daily because I have such sensitive skin and I’m not getting any younger, so if I can help my skin out by protecting it, I’ll do it.  I have tried many different kinds over the years and I do have my favorites, so I wasn’t sure that I would enjoy this one, honestly.  This Broad Spectrum SPF 45 is quick absorbing, which is a huge deal for me since I’m always on the go.  It is lightweight and perfect to be worn under makeup.  It provides the skin with antioxidant protection and protects against UV rays.  I thought it was awesome that it was Awarded the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation as well.

I didn’t notice any white cast while using this SPF, which is always a plus for me.  And, my skin absorbed it well.  Here are a few of the ingredients in this SPF for those who are wondering:  Zinc Oxide, Octinoxate, Silybin, and Caffeine.

This SPF applies easily and again, it is so lightweight, I forget that I have it on.  I have been using this on my sons as well since I always have it on me and they forget they have sunscreen on at all.  I especially enjoy that it doesn’t make my skin feel oily or greasy and I don’t feel the need to overly reapply like other sunscreens on the market.  I’m not a huge fan of the fact that it has Octinoxate in the formulation, but so far, it’s working for me.

So, after months of trying out these products from PCA Skin, I finally have some information to share with all of you.  Overall, I do really enjoy the products I’ve tried so far.  There are a variety of pros and cons for each, but I’m just really thankful that it didn’t cause my skin to go to war with me.  PCA Skin was founded in 1990 and for over 25 years they have continued to provide great products for their customers and beauty professionals worldwide.

PCA Skin does not perform or condone animal testing at any point during their formulary process and all ingredients used have decades of research proving their safety on human skin.  I was quite excited to try these products and as I mentioned before, I do really like them.  I will be saving up some money to continue using these products as a part of my skin care regimen and I look forward to trying others the brand has to offer.
