I am a dog lover, true and true.  Don’t get me wrong – I don’t discriminate and love all animals in general, though dogs are and always have been my favorite.  I have always had large dogs so I was used to training big dogs.  Our Koa – an American Red Nose Pit bull died a few years ago and we have since added Ikaika to our family.  Ikaika is a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel and let me just say – it is a big difference training a little dog as it is a large one.  I have had to learn to be patient with a dog that is a little more maintenance than a pit bull and I found that some of my normal training worked while others did not.  Today I am going to share with you a few easy tips that will hopefully get your tiny dog trained and if not, at least it will give you some tips on how to enjoy your little companion.

5 Easy Tips To Training Your Dog

1.  Patience – Patience is key no matter what size your dog or animal is.  Any dog (or animal for that matter) will react according to your actions and demeanor.  Be calm and keep from being excited.  Take your time, like with children – everything is a learning process and this is the same with your dog.

2.  Consistency is Key – Be consistent with what you do.  If you tell your dog to eat his food outside, keep his feeding done outside (just as an example).  Dogs have a short attention span (not all of them, but many do) so by keeping things a constant and doing everything the same – it keeps your dog from feeling confused and therefore a routine will develop.

3.  Let your dog know what they are doing wrong – this is known as replacement therapy.  This is quite easy when you start doing it.  By being firm and letting your dog know that something is not right, your dog will learn.  I.e. Telling your dog “no” when it is doing something wrong like chewing on a shoe.  Be consistent and firmly tell your dog no to let them know that what they are doing is wrong and then take the item away. Use a voice that is firm, but do not yell.

4.  Training tools can be helpful – We don’t use it often, but a dog training collar with a remote control comes in handy when you are not in the direct vicinity of your dog to tell them to stop something without yelling at them.  I recommend a dog training collar like Cujo Controls.  It comes with 8 levels of training with a fully adjustable collar.  It can be used on dogs of all sizes and is one of the easiest tools to use.  Do not confuse this tool with punishing your animal.  While it does offer a shock level, we use it for vibration, which is light and soft enough to have the dog notice that he gets a pulsation when he does something he is not to be doing.  It then becomes a reminder that what he is about to do, he should not be doing.  It comes with a wireless remote control and is water resistant.  The Anti-Bark collar has a range of up to 800M and you can train 2 dogs at the same time.  This unit is meant to accelerate obedience training, prevent unwanted behavior like barking and chewing and helps you with various training.  If you don’t like the pulsation mode or vibrating mode, you also have a sound mode that allows you control with sound.  This product is safe, humane and an effective tool when used properly and not abused.  While many will say it is not something they want to use to train their dog, it has been helpful in training ours and Ikaika’s squeaky bark at 4am is not an issue any longer for us or our neighbors.  Again – we use the pulsations that are light vibrations (similar to that of a vibrating ringer on a cell phone) that will not hurt or injure our fur baby.  We have tested it on ourselves and it actually tickles but vibrates enough to get your dogs attention.  That is the setting we chose for our little dog, there are eight settings available for you to choose from.

5 Easy Tips To Training Your Dog

5.  Love – last but not least, animals need a lot of love and compassion.  They are like children and need affection and they are affectionate creatures.  It doesn’t matter the breed (I know that first hand) because each animal will love as their owner loves.  Just as we teach our children, we teach our fur babies to love by loving them.

Summertime in Hawaii is a dream come true for many and for my family, we love it and enjoy our paradise home year round.  As a family, we love to get outdoors and experience all that our beautiful islands offer us from the ocean and streams to hiking, climbing and all around fun.  But with the high island heat, deep ocean water and so much to do around us, we must be prepared for anything and everything and planning for a safe summer ahead of time is a must.  Having worked in the tourism industry for years, I have seen many injuries occur and today I want to share some simple tips that will make your summer time here in Hawaii or anywhere a blast and hopefully – accident free.  Here are a few personal summer safety tips that I think every parent should know.

Summer Safety Tips Every Parent Should Know - Be Summer Ready With Aflac

Summer Safety Tips:

Stay Hydrated – Drink plenty of water!  While we are out and about having fun and enjoying our summer, often times we don’t realize that we haven’t been hydrating our bodies until it is too late.  Make sure to have consume/drink the daily intake of water or increase the amount depending on your level of activity/fun.  Drinking water not only helps to keep your body hydrated and healthy, but it will also keep you feeling cooler while you are out and about.  Don’t forget about this important tip.

SPF/Sunblock are Essential – Use it!  Let’s face it, many of us forget to apply sunblock before it’s too late so the key is to be prepared and have it ready and handy before you plan your summer adventures.  SPF or even coverups like hats, etc. can be essential in not only protecting your skin from sunburn, aging, etc – but also cancer.  Make sure to have an SPF you are comfortable using and apply 20 minutes before you get out in the sun.  Reapply every two hours as needed or if you are in the water.  Sunblock is so important to our family that I always carry a small travel size in my purse year round and my sons always wear a hat year round if we are gonna be exposed to the sun and elements.

Update that First Aid Kit!  Since I have very active boys, we have a First Aid kit in each vehicle, a small kit in my purse and a large one in the house to be prepared at a moment’s notice.  Cuts, scrapes, thorns – all things ouch can occur at any time and it’s always best to be prepared.  My son has played basketball for years and each year one of his teammates get hurt on the court, needless to say – Mommy is always to the rescue.

Water Safety is a MUST!  Obviously, we live in Hawaii and are surrounded by water so it is important that we teach our children water safety.  My husband and I are both CPR Certified and have years of water training both in the pool and ocean so it is imperative that you teach your children the dangers of water and how to protect themselves.  While working in the hotel industry, I have seen many tourists drown due to lack of knowledge of the ocean current, waves and tides so it is important that no matter where you go – that you familiarize yourself with the ocean conditions and know that the ocean is unpredictable.  Check signs, posted flag warnings and speak with a life guard on duty when available and make sure to supervise your children at all times.  When swimming in a pool, make sure you are supervising your children and have nice clean fun.  One important thing to also remember… if your child has been taking in water while swimming or gulping water while playing – monitor your child several hours after water play as that can result in Secondary Drowning – this goes for adults too.

Summer Safety Tips Every Parent Should Know

Know Limitations!  Teach your kids to listen to their bodies.  This may not seem like a big deal, but it can turn into a disaster if not taken into consideration.  Teach your children that if at any point they feel pain or discomfort while playing, they should notify their coach and get out of the game or tell a parent or adult while playing. While sitting on the sidelines is one of the most difficult situations a player can face, pushing through injuries increases their severity and keeps you out of action longer.  This goes for regular outdoor play, swimming, etc – not just during a game or game play.

Be prepared with accidental & supplemental insurance coverage and Plan for unexpected expenses!  Let’s face it, accidents happen and while children are still learning and growing, things can always happen at a moments notice without warning.  If you keep busy during the summer months, whether a vacation trip or just lounging at the beach or pool, it is always best to be one step ahead of it all and get that extra insurance to help with expenses.  Between sports (which occur often during the summer for my boys) or outdoor play and activities, it’s best to be prepared.  Accidents happen. When unexpected injuries happen, make sure you’re prepared with supplemental insurance like Aflac’s accident policy to help cover out-of-pocket expenses.

Should the need arise where you need that extra insurance benefit you’ll have it ready.  Submitting health insurance claims isn’t something people necessarily look forward to doing – with claim denials and waiting up to a month for payment, it can be a long and difficult process. And while 30 days may not seem like a long time, for families struggling to pay medical expenses, it can feel like a lifetime.  Therefore, Aflac recently introduced One Day PaySM – an initiative that allows Aflac to process, approve and pay eligible claims in just a day.  By being prepared, you’ll have a back up plan should you need it.

Visit Aflac’s Accident Insurance page for more information on their accident policies here.

Last but not least, the most important tip for Summer is to Enjoy life and have lots of fun. Children grow up too quickly so make sure you cherish every moment and make lots of memories!

Establishing a budget and sticking to it is probably one of the most difficult things we can do as human beings.  Trust me when I say, I understand and I know how it feels when you see something on a shelf, in a window or online and you have that feeling of “I must have that”.  But nothing says “I’m ready to get serious about financial planning” like looking at the Holidays as a way to start. The best time of year to start thinking about your financial peace of mind is NOW.

capital one 360

As most of you know, I am currently a stay-at-home mom while my husband works full time and overtime.  Budgeting for a family of five is no easy feat, but it is not difficult either.  It takes a little planning, smart decision making and of course, a good support system.  With only one income coming in, there are times when bills can slip through the cracks, saving money is near to impossible and it feels like sticking to a budget is down right outlandish, but it can be done.

Here are a few tips to help in creating a budget and sticking to it.

  • First of all, if you feel like you could use some help with budgeting or even creating a budget – ASK FOR HELP.  Now a days there are programs like Capital One 360 that are there to help with questions you may have, ways to get started and plans for future savings.  Capital One 360 products are designed to save consumers time and money and with an online and mobile app, Capital One 360 is available 24/7.
  • Second, know your financial situation inside and out.  Keep a calendar or list of bills currently being paid on and a list of expenses you foresee in the future.  Calculate those to ensure that what ever your income for the month, make sure those bills are automatically accounted for.  This goes for your 401K plans, retirement, etc.  Saving for these costs now will eliminate worrying about “needing” to save for them later.
  • With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, keep a list of goals for saving and stick with it.  Many throw out their financial goals during the holidays and forget that we still need to remain grounded while celebrating.  Don’t lose sight of your goals for your budget that you set up.  Keep them in mind and spend only what you have planned for.
  • Most importantly to me is to not stress out.  Creating a budget and sticking to it should not be difficult.  If it’s difficult, it serves as a challenge and then no one really wants to stick with it.  Stay within your means, allow yourself to still have some spending money, but make sure that you have planned accordingly and you’ll be just fine.

It’s no secret that the Holiday season is surely my favorite time of year.  As a child, even if we grew up with little money, my parents always made this time of year special and I’m thankful that I got my creative sense and fun swagger from them.  Lots happened this week, busy busy busy!  So, here is a quick weekly wrap up.

This year, Halloween came and went faster than I could ever imagine and before I realized it, Halloween crept up on us and we were all getting dressed to trick-or-treat.  My husband and I took the boys to the Pumpkin Patch earlier in the week which was fun, they had a blast (vlog coming soon) and while we were a bit late to get up there, we still found us some fun pumpkins to carve and draw on.  Since this has been a yearly tradition for us to go, everyone was excited and we were so thrilled to see the boys have a blast.Pumpkin patch 2014

I’m also happy to say that we are hitting cooler weather, woohoo.  While we don’t really have snow here with exception to the summit of our dormant volcano, it’s still nice to know that I might be able to rock out some warmer threads this season.  We are all looking forward to cuddle weather.  We also had Parent Teacher Conference for all three boys this week too… I’m proud to say that all three of them are excelling wonderfully.  To say we are proud parents would be an understatement.

While my husband had to work on Halloween night, my sister and I took the boys out to Trick-or-Treat in a neighborhood we were quite familiar with, we go there each year.  Expecting to hit the mother load of candy this year, we were a bit bummed that half of the houses were not giving out candy.  I think we may need to find a new location.  It was a bummer, but nonetheless, we got some goodies anyway and it was about having fun – not the candy.

Halloween 2014

This year the boys picked out their costumes to wear instead of Mommy painting their faces.  Kevin (Ka’eo) was a ghoul… the one from the Scream movies.  The cool thing was that his mask dripped blood and everyone really got a kick out of it.  Luke was Captain America, Isaiah Superman and I decided I wanted to really embrace my tomboy-ishness and painted a skull mask on with some face paint and makeup.  I did the top half of my face (my eyes) using makeup to give it a sultry sexy tomboy appeal. lol Details for my makeup are posted below.  My sister Harmony did a mask out of makeup – I loved it, reminds me of like a Dark Angel look.

Halloween 2014

We were quite happy to see a few commercials the last week and wanted to take advantage of the deal.  It was FREE Spooky Face Pancake night at IHOP, so the boys, my sissy Harmony and I enjoyed breakfast for dinner.  Yay us!

Halloween 2014

Overall this past week was quite a blast.  It went by much too quick for my liking, but what is most important to me is spending this time with my family.  Sometimes during the holidays we forget to stop and think about what is most important… we are either too busy shopping, cooking or working to blink and it is too often that we forget to soak in all the awesome memories.  I can admit – I’m surely guilty of that.  So make sure to stop and make a memory of what you’re experiencing… the work, the food, everything in between will still be there when you are done making memories. xo

Halloween Skull Makeup

As promised, here is my makeup from Halloween.  Everything was super simple to create and this was a great choice for me since I needed to be done and ready to go to catch all the good candy. lol  For my eye makeup I am using a combination of the Anastasia Beverly Hills Tamanna and Amrezy Palettes.  Both have been favorites of mine all month and I really loved that it gave me a great fall smoky look. I know I promised to have a review up for Tamanna, so I hope to do that soon.  I am using Ardell 120 Whispies, Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper, Paula Dorf 2+1 For Brows, Tarte Smoldereyes Pencil in Fig and Mally Evercolor Liner in Midnight and L’Oreal Voluminous Miss Manga Mascara.

Halloween Skull Makeup

For my skull part of my face, I am using White Halloween Cream Makeup, Milani Bella Eyes Shadow in Bella Black, Mia Mariu black eyeliner, a blending brush, a pencil brush and an angled eyeliner brush.

Halloween Skull Makeup

I opted for a pair of jeans, flip flops and a black t-shirt since I wanted to be comfortable, a little warm since it has been chilly out and I wanted to have mobility.  My shirt is a custom shirt and I’ll be posting about that soon.  I hope you all had a fabulous week and a fun Halloween.  While I know some people do not celebrate the holiday – I totally understand that, I hope you had a wonderful day nonetheless.  My feet hurt, I’m a bit tired but at the end of the day, I surely had a great one.

Did you have fun this Halloween?  What were your highlights from this week?  Wishing you all a fabulous weekend. ~xo
