As a child growing up in Hawaii, you could find Aloe Vera plants everywhere and anywhere you could think of, including our backyard.  My dad used it to treat our burns and sunburn during the summer and other medicinal uses, but I had never heard about drinking aloe water until a few years ago, maybe because I didn’t pay attention to it much or it wasn’t told to me directly.  With my sons in full sports mode for summer (we are finishing up basketball season and going into football season in about a month), we always try to ensure that we keep all of our boys fully hydrated and ready to play in the hot summer sun.  Today, I share with you my thoughts and my son Kevin’s on Detox Water, a Bioactive Aloe Water.

Detox Water is a mother inspired drink created by Founder Kenneth Park.  In his childhood days Kenneth’s mother had experienced serious digestive issues and no medication worked in trying to heal her ailments.  A doctor she seen suggested trying aloe.  By adding aloe water to her diet, she not only resolved her stomach problems, but she improved her immune response to the on-going stomach pains.  After realizing the plethora of benefits she experienced from ingesting aloe, Ken’s mother shared her smoothies with the rest of the family.  Each morning with breakfast she would serve her delicious aloe-filled smoothies, blended with fruits and yogurt to neutralize the plant’s naturally bitter taste.

Detox Water is available in three different delicious flavors – Original, Pinamint and Mangaloe.  Each bottle contains 350mg of ACTIValoe aloe gel flakes with no less than 10% aloe polysaccarides by dry weight.  I know it’s a lot of technical talk – but basically, that means it’s comparable to drinking a shot of the most extensitively researched and clinically-proven pure aloe juice.  Each bottle is filled with electrolytes and vitamins to help replenish and restore your body with electrolytes, vitamin c and a full range of vitamin b’s.  What also makes this so wonderful is that Detox Water is made without the use of artificial colors, flavors and preservatives.  The aloe water is able to provide healthy hydration from the best of what nature has to offer.  Detox Water is just 15 calories per serving and is rejuvenating, refreshing aloe water paired with organic and natural flavors.  It’s literally something that helps to make you feel great and not guilty.

It’s no secret if you have been visiting here on my blog, that I’m a huge fan of coconut oil, coconut water and just coconuts in general.  I love the flavor and I love the scent but I also love the ingredient in itself as it has definitely been a huge part of my skin care routine, health and overall well being.  Recently I was given the opportunity to try INVO Coconut Water.  I haven’t particularly heard about the brand before and being a coconut water connoisseur myself, I thought I would try it out.  Today I share with you my thoughts on this product, it’s benefitis and whether or not I enjoyed it on this week’s Foodie Friday.

I’m a huge believer in the fact that water is such an essential nutrient for our bodies and drinking its minimum amount each day is a necessity.  But, I also know that if this is something new for you – new and innovative ways to drink as much water as you can is definitely a must.  Because of this, sometimes I like to mix things up a bit and drink some coconut water that helps to not only provide the refreshment my body needs but also the hydration.  INVO Coconut Water is a refreshing and flavorful healthy coconut drink that is not only easy to take around with you but it delicious and will easily become your go-to drink from the instant you start sipping on it.

Besides being very refreshing, coconut water contains 5 essential electrolytes to keep you hydrated.  It also has as much potassium as one banana which I love.  And, an interesting tidbit from INVO is that there is a pink hue in their coconut water which is a result of a natural enzymatic process that causes the polyphenolics present in raw coconut water to turn pink over time.

So now that I’ve taken the time to give you the run down on the products, all the technical and scientific information and everything in between; I’m going to share with you my overall thoughts on this drink.

First of all, if you are not a fan of the coconut flavor (I know some people don’t like it), I suggest going with the Tropical Flavor.  My sons all love the Tropical flavor though they enjoy them all.  It taste like a tropical fruit punch and the coconut flavor is not as prominent, though you easily have a quenched thirst, feel re-hydrated and it’s delicious.  If you are someone that loves Green Tea or Tea flavors, I think you’ll quite enjoy the Sencha Green Tea.  It’s got a great tea flavor and if you are someone that enjoys a great green tea, you’ll love this particular flavor.  My favorite out of the three I tried is the Pure Coconut Water.  It tastes just like fresh coconut juice/water that you would get here in Hawaii right off the tree.

Each drink is not only delicious, but really great for a usual Hawaii day.  While these are made in Thailand, they are offered at many retailers through out the US and I have been told they can be found at Whole Foods, though I haven’t found them at my local store.  Once they are available, I will admit that this will be a staple in our household because everyone loves them.

The INVO Coconut water is gluten free, Kosher and Vegan.  And, like most premium food products, INVO Coconut Water requires refrigeration for optimum quality and safety so make sure you do not drink the water if you suspect that it hasn’t been kept chilled.  If you are allergic to nuts, while it is extremely rare to have a coconut water allergy, it is best to seek medical advice prior to consuming these drinks since Coconuts are tree nuts.  The INVO Coconut Water is a good source of vitamin C& B group vitamins and great after a work out!

My family and I are really enjoy these coconut waters and I highly recommend them.  We give these treats a two thumbs up each and all agree they are delicious but great for keeping hydrated.  If I were running consistently or on a jog, I would pull for this directly after to replenish my electrolytes.  INVO is coming out with some great new flavors which I’m also really excited to try.  I think if you are someone that wants to change up your water routine or try something new, this would make a great treat.  And, as I mentioned before, it’s great for the whole family.

Fitness Friday – Burn Off Those Thanksgiving Calories With TKO Jump Rope

While Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite Holiday and it’s usually because I stuff my self like crazy.  So when Black Friday comes around, instead of shopping those calories off, I choose to either go for a nice run or spend some time putting in a little cardio.  One of my favorite things to do is pick up a jump rope and get some cardio in that way.  With a little change up to your routine, it can easily make for a good experience and leave you feeling like you conquered the world.  Between some hip hip dancing, the elliptical and a good old fashion walk or run, the Jump Rope offers me some fun and a bit of variety.  I have a few Jump Ropes I enjoy using and this one from TKO is my current favorite.

TKO is a brand that my family and I are quite familiar with.  Launced in 1996 by founder Garry Kurtz, TKO was the first boxing equipment company.  I remember when I was in high school and in Weight Training class as the new TKO brand equipment was delivered.  There were a lot of oohs and aahs.  Eventually TKO evolved into a health and fitness equipment brand offering accessories and apparel as well as other lifestyle oriented products.

Their Jump Rope retails for $30, and comes in a selection of different colors (3 to be exact) for that fitness addict.  I got my set in purple / pink and we all know how much I love purple so it has made working out and putting in some cardio easy for me.  Honestly though, it doesn’t matter to me what color my rope is so long as it works well and helps to give me a great work out.  The rope has a great rubber coated gripped handle which makes holding it while jumping secure in your hands.  The vinyl rope is 9 feet in length which makes it perfect for most heights but also allows you the speed due to the weight of the rope itself, giving you the option to really burn some calories.  The rope is lightweight, has metal ball-bearings and is a great option for the beginner or advanced workout person.

A good jump rope must be comfortable to hold and lightweight to allow for high intensity interval training – which this one does well with.  The TKO jump rope provides fluidity of motion which means you get little strain on joints while offering a great workout.  This is a great thing for me because the less strain on my knees and ankle after some bad injuries a few years back keep me able bodied to continue my work out.

Being a plus sized gal, many think I am not active enough and that’s why I look this way – but I keep a constant workout regimen and walk / run at least a mile at least 5 days of the week.  Jump rope is one of those things that will offer me a great cardio workout and get my heart rate up and I use it to replace my daily walk if I’m unable to fit it into my schedule for the day.  This particular one from TKO is sold at Macy’s and most major sports retailers nationwide so it’s easy to get your hands on one for yourself.

When it comes to my teeth (or the hubs or boys), I am constantly trying to stay on top of my game in cleaning and maintenance.  As a child, I always remembered my Dentist talking about how important it was to stay on top of those chompers and it stuck with me.  Between bi-yearly dentist visits for the family and good cleaning and flossing habits, I think we do pretty well.  I’m always intrigued with new gadgets on the market today that offer great results and recently I was given the opportunity to try the ISSA by Foreo toothbrush.  It’s been over a month since I started using this toothbrush and I wanted to share my thoughts with all of you.

The ISSA by Foreo is a new type of toothbrush that uses silicone bristles with pulsation technology for both cleaning and gum massage.  Similar to their face cleaning tool – the LUNA, I was intrigued by the concept and couldn’t wait to test it out.  The ISSA is ultra-hygienic with a nonporous silicone brush that is gentler and more hygienic than a standard nylon toothbrush which can be abrasive on the gums and harbor bacteria.  And, unlike other electronic toothbrushes on the market – you need only change out your brush head once a year and charge every 6 months or so.

The ISSA is available in four very cool and awesome colors and retails for $199 and there is also a mini version that can be used for kids which retails for $119.  Each replacement brush head is $24.90 – but as I mentioned before, you need only replace your brush head once a year.  You can find all of these and the descriptions at Foreo.com.

So how did the ISSA work for me?  Well, I naturally gravitate to the more soft bristle brush because I have sensitive gums and teeth.  But, I’m one of those people that will brush my teeth like a mad woman until they feel extra clean and squeaky.  With that said, I think the concept of the ISSA is interesting and works well and while I have been enjoying this product particularly for massaging my sensitive gums, when it comes to cleaning my teeth, I feel like I could use a little extra something.  Since I switch back and forth between a manual and electric toothbrush for my teeth care, I found that the ISSA did not get into the tighter areas that my teeth have to get them clean.  However, with all of that said, I still think my gums truly love this product.  It offers a pulsating but gentle massage on my gums that I really don’t get with a regular toothbrush and after visiting my dentist two weeks ago, she agreed that my gums were looking happy.

The bristles are a little longer than what I am used to – so I felt like there was not enough pressure on my actual teeth to get the clean I had desired, but nonetheless, this product has still made a difference in my gums, so I have been enjoying it and use it in combination with other products as a part of my teeth cleaning routine.  After trying this product now for over a month, I can say that while it cannot be a stand-alone tooth brush for me, I will still enjoy using it for my gum massage and while it does get my teeth clean, I just need a little more firmness to get that squeaky clean I love.

If you can afford the price point of this product and have sensitive teeth or gums – you may enjoy this toothbrush because it is very gentle on my teeth.  However, if you are someone that loves a good scrub a dub and wants their tooth brush to get into every crevice and cavity – you may want to stick with a traditional toothbrush.  Nonetheless, I’m glad I had a chance to try the ISSA by Foreo because my gums seriously love me now.
